Zombie Apocalypse- where do you head?

HungryHippo11 · 27/07/2021 07:03

Imagine its a zombie apocalypse a la The Walking Dead.
Where would you go? Hole up at home, travel somewhere busy where there might be more supplies, go somewhere rural, steal a boat?

What skills do you have to survive/hide/fight back?

Lighthearted please!

I've taught many groups a BTEC unit on 'equality and diversity' in places like Birmingham there are loads of different things the students know / do eg different languages, different cooking techniques, living in other countries etc.

I then taught it in a college near the Welsh border, the group was all white and all female and I was the only one who didn't know some Welsh.

So we did, "equality and diversity for the Zombie apocalypse"

Some of the skills this group had

Driving a tractor / farm machinery
Making alcohol
Knife throwing
Shooting - along with skinning rabbits for food
Sheep shearing
Foraging

So I'm heading across country to catch up with these young ladies.
My contribution will be to teach crafts, sewing, knitting, crochet...

I think I’d head to b&q or a huge garden centre. Lots of tools, generators, sharp things and garden furniture to sleep on. Compost and seeds to start growing food.

GetTaeFuck · 27/07/2021 10:21

Aside from the fact that I have zero desire to live during/after an apocalypse, this is what I would do if I wanted to live…

During the initial outbreak I would stay in my house and fortify it. A lot of people would die/get turned because they pack their cars and end up trapped in non moving traffic.

I live in a terraced house, the one next door to me is abandoned, our back yards are tiny, due to alleyways I have access to about 6 other houses where I could scavenge for food/water; there’s a huge iron gate onto the street so zombies can’t access that way. I’d assume there might be zombies in the houses and take my baseball bat. Nice and quiet. Probably no humans as they’d have tried to flee like most people do.

There is a shop about a mile away that sells various weapons, I’d try and head there at some point and get myself a crossbow/swords/other quiet weapons.

There are also lots of small corner shops nearby food.

Long term? Unsure. I live quite close to the city. So I’d have to get away due to zombie hoards.

GetTaeFuck · 27/07/2021 10:23

I would also raid the local pharmacy for antibiotics, wound dressings and pain killers.

ClemDanFango · 27/07/2021 10:24

I’d walk off a cliff. Can’t be arsed what that bollocks.

SaskiaRembrandt · 27/07/2021 10:26

I see the logic of heading out of urban areas, but as everyone seems to have that idea, I think I'll stay in the city because it will be empty. Plus, lots of parks and green space I can use to grown food, and shops I can plunder from until I can harvest it. Also, there are pubs, museums and other interesting cultural activities I can enjoy while you all get on with skinning rabbits and fighting farmers in your overcrowded rural hideaways.

Vanillaradio · 27/07/2021 10:26

Probably let them eat me- I have type 1 diabetes and not going to survive when the insulin runs out.
But apart from that dh and I think a nearby garden centre would be a good place. Lots of food that would last a while from the cafe and mini supermarket area, many zombie killing implements, fenced off area at the back with plants to grow for more food, batteries, chance to get electricity up and going.

TrueRefuge · 27/07/2021 10:29

Everyone knows the best zombie survival strategy is to hope up at The Winchester, have a toastie and wait for it all to blow over......

SedentaryCat · 27/07/2021 10:32

I'd head to the Winchester and wait for it to all blow over Grin

Alternatively, I'd put treadmills in front of the doors and rig up some way of generating electricity, occasionally going out to remove limbs, etc, from the mechanism.

Got plenty of food and supplies in the stockpile, so would wait for this to deplete which would hopefully coincide with the end of the first wave. Then I'd head off in the car to somewhere remote.

SedentaryCat · 27/07/2021 10:32

x-post @TrueRefuge Grin

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 27/07/2021 10:35

There's a few islands off the Welsh coast that would be my goal.

When things start to get iffy id make sure grab bags are ready and we'd raid Wilkos for sharp stuff and anything useful. We're already reasonably rural so initially we'd barricade ourselves in DGPs house which is big and rural. I think they have neighbours with guns so if they were already dead we'd take those or work with them/trade for weapons.

We'd barricade ourselves in the house until we were forced to travel and then make our way to the coast.

There are a few isolated hamlets so we'd sleep in barns and set traps.

Hopefully we'd be able to board a boat when we got to the coast.

TrueRefuge · 27/07/2021 10:40

@SedentaryCat See you there, hopefully the Breville's not been looted! Grin

I would stay put and hope my 19 neighbours bugger off. I have a good look out point to the entrance of the close here. Slowly work my way through the other 19 houses for supplies. Finally i will have peace. Grin
@RavenclawsRoar World War Z zombies are not allowed in this scenario. As said above, they're cheating.
The world war z zombies rom the books are allowed. The ones from Brad Pitt in generic zombie film that bears no resemblance to the amazing book are not allowed

Christmasbird · 27/07/2021 11:22

I'm a bit of a history nerd so I've got a list of all the decommissioned cold War bunkers near me that are still accessible.
From there I intend to run my zombie destroying operation and save whats left of humanity.

oneglassandpuzzled · 27/07/2021 12:51

Unfortunately there have been cases of bites from walkers in both Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead. You aren't safe in the sea.

Though, as both series show, you're probably ultimately more at risk from other human beings trying to steal your stuff or your safe place or enslave you than you are from fairly slow-moving walkers.

oneglassandpuzzled · 27/07/2021 12:52

Sorry, bites in the sea or lakes and rivers, that should have said.

RogueRebel · 27/07/2021 12:55

Make sure you have enough food/water and supplies and a way to secure your house for the first few days at least. There will be chaos! Once the people and zombies have separated and moved away. It's best to move away from any high population areas.

FAQs · 27/07/2021 13:04

I’d hunt down the mumsnet preppers and then find a disused bunker, loads around the UK.

WTFisNext · 27/07/2021 13:06

I'd go home to my parents house. They have coal fired central heating/cooking, well access to an aquifer, solar panels and tiny windows (very old building that was subject to window tax).

The walls would need reinforcing but otherwise it could be a decent stronghold that we could defend from the undead and marauders alike. Plus it's in the middle of nowhere, so the likelihood of someone purposefully heading to there is pretty remote, stragglers I can handle!

What would undo me though is that I don't have even an ounce of the gardening skills my mother has so her glorious vegetable garden probably wouldn't sustain us under my care...so would need my mam to survive the first wave at least or my family is doomed anyway!

Whinginadeville · 27/07/2021 13:11

Bloody genius

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 27/07/2021 13:17

Car showroom

 • steal the most solid and spacious van I can find the keys for.

Supermarket with a pharmacy and petrol station for:

 • antibiotics
-wound care
 • narcotics/painkillers
 • multivitamins

-cigarettes and alcohol for trading

 • batteries, camping stuff including butane and cooker, foil, torches, lanterns, tents, sleeping bags
 • tinned and packaged food
 • sensible shoes in current and next size for DD
 • sensible clothes with growing room
-bbq and charcoal
 • backpacks to make up several emergency packs
 • matches, lighters, string
 • petrol, diesel and oil

DIY store for:

 • planks/sheets of wood
 • petrol and manual saws
 • nails, bolts, screws in "lock this fucker down" sizes of solidness
 • rope, chain, padlocks

Then home where I would barricade the house, block over every door and window, before moving us and everything we own upstairs and barricading the stairs as an additional measure.

I reckon if you could lock yourself in completely for 6 months then most of the zombies would be decomposed skeleton like and less hazardous by the time you needed to venture out.

Blow out the bridges at each end of the village to keep every other bugger out

AlfonsoTheMango · 27/07/2021 14:19

Thought-provoking stuff. I need to give this a ponder.
