What to do with keys on beach?

That's it really. On holiday with ds- single parent- what do I do with my car keys when we want to go in the sea? No lockers that I could see. Am I missing something really obvious?!!!

I was in Australia a couple of years ago and saw people with key boxes attached to their cars. I can't remember how they were attached but a smaller version of what people have outside their front doors. I thought what a great idea as so many people would head to the beach surfing on their own.

www.thecarstuff.com/best-car-keysafe

Something like this

filka · 19/07/2021 13:29

Usually one of the spare keys is non-electronic and there is always at least one physical lock. So lock the electronic key in the car using the non-electronic one; keep that on your wrist with a rubber band like at swimming pools (or used to be when I was young...).

You can buy a lock box that attaches to the tow bar of your car or the hook in the back with a combination on it. Search Amazon for a surf lock box or key box

I just stick a zip up pouch under the blanket and pop bag on top to make sure that not doesn't blow up. Not had a problem in the 11 years of being a single parent (and I lived in a foreign holiday resort for half of that so could be at the beach every day)

minimoomoos · 19/07/2021 13:41

Do you not go to the bag with a bag or a basket etc? I just leave them in the bag with the towels. Confused

newnortherner111 · 19/07/2021 14:32

Could you walk to the beach from your accommodation?

blobby10 · 19/07/2021 16:08

Always holidayed in the UK and always left phones, keys,. money, purse and camera pushed down to the bottom of one of the (many) bags of 'stuff' that we took! Never had anything stolen even on the most packed beach at the busiest time of the year. Also left phone and money when I went to the beach on my own - left my bag and towel and shoes on a rock. Always though I was extremely lucky but maybe Cornish beaches don't attract the chancers?

mildlymiffed · 19/07/2021 20:17

@blobby10 I'd never given it a second thought- but being down in the south west, with just me and my son I suddenly got worried that if someone did pinch my beach bag with keys, phone, cards in it- I'd be quite screwed!

Stranded with a car in the carpark, and a small child. Potentially in wet togs! It really got me wondering what others do.

Today I purchased one of those car safety boxes. Seems like a sensible bet and we trialled it out this evening and it works! So at least I can swim now with my son without feeling stressed about our stuff!

I know I'm probably being paranoid but the onus is on me as the only adult here!

Bank card in my swimming costume under my wet suit.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2021 20:52

Though I am going to get a waterproof bag for my old phone.

I haven’t rtfl so apologies if someone has said this but when we used to go surfing we had a box with a PIN number lock that you attached to the underneath of your vehicle (van in our case) as we didn’t take any stuff to the beach. You could conceal it with your stuff tho.
Search car key safe box and should find something, link below is the website we used.

Just catching up and see you’ve bought something, great!!

Clymene · 19/07/2021 21:55

I have a waterproof bag on a lanyard. I put my phone and my keys in it.

GrandmasCat · 19/07/2021 21:58

You can get some thick plastic bags from homebargains for your phone and keys that you can wear around your neck. Just leave most valuables in your car and take with you the phone, a credit card if you cannot pay with your phone and the car key.

LemonRoses · 19/07/2021 22:03

I just put mine on my towel or dryrobe on the beach. I’ve done that for as long as I’ve driven to the beach and never had an issue.

RedTitsMcGinty · 20/07/2021 07:19

Tow float! For about £20 on Amazon you can get a tow float, which is a waterproof bag that can be inflated as a float, and you attach it to your waist. Used for open water swimming but also useful just for splashing around in the water (I give DD a tow on mine).

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/07/2021 07:23

hope for the best op
