What to do with keys on beach?

That's it really. On holiday with ds- single parent- what do I do with my car keys when we want to go in the sea? No lockers that I could see. Am I missing something really obvious?!!!

I used to just leave them in my shoes..l can't imagine anyone wanting to steal keys then try to find the random car or house they belong to 🙄.
Obviously never left a purse with money on display..
The thing with the beach is unless they are stalking you for a bit thieves wouldn't know how close by you are.

I bought a waterproof pouch for my phone and keys from decathalon that I'll wear round my neck. I've decided I don't care if I look like a loser.

GiantToadstool · 18/07/2021 19:46

Wow we're at the beach a lot and never heard od people taking keys with them!!

Just leave them in a bag with your towel and cool bag or whatever youve got by the beach.

Bookaholic73 · 18/07/2021 19:51

We use one of these.

Been using ours (not this specific brand btw) for a year and it’s never let us down.

We go bodyboarding for hours with it on, and it’s always stayed waterproof.

gogohm · 18/07/2021 19:51

I leave them in my bag, there's always other people about you can ask to keep an eye

mildlymiffed · 18/07/2021 20:05

Ah- @GiantToadstool I never worried about it before either- but had this realisation today that if the keys (or my phone) went walking, me and my ds would be a little stranded. And given that holidaying as a single parent can be stressful enough it gave me the heebyjeebies a bit!

Id be more worried about dropping them in the water...

Wishingwell75 · 18/07/2021 20:08

Sorry if this has already been suggested but I think you can get small magnetic boxes that you could put the key into and then attach to the underside of your car or into the wheel arch. Obviously you would need to be discreet/stealthy as you nonchalantly squat down to tie your shoe and place the box.
After writing this it just feels stressful but then so does the thought of losing it in the sea!
I think hiding it in " rubbish" is the best bet!

Bargebill19 · 18/07/2021 20:14

Oh phone as well? Definitely condom and if no zip pocket large enough, put it in a bum bag along with keys as before and attach to waist.
Personally I wouldn’t stash them in your rubbish/belongings incase they are picked up by anyone else or worse a dog nicks the rubbish etc.

Hushabyelullaby · 18/07/2021 21:10

I've always thought something like this www.thisiswhyimbroke.com/secret-compartment-sunscreen/ looks a great idea

55378OO8 · 18/07/2021 21:14

I just ask someone nearby to keep an eye on my stuff

WildSwimming101 · 18/07/2021 21:20

Leave them with the rest of your stuff.

MyMabel · 18/07/2021 21:21

Waterproof wallet with a wristband so you don’t really have to ‘hold’ it constantly

GiantToadstool · 18/07/2021 21:24

Ive never heard of someone's keys being stolen and we live near a busy beach!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/07/2021 21:32

I use a waterproof phone pouch which is big enough for phone, keys and cash. It has a neck lanyard.

bonbonours · 18/07/2021 21:39

We live in a seaside town and go to the beach all the time. I literally leave my keys and phone in my bag with our towels all the time. I suppose I keep a very vague eye on them while we're swimming, I've never seen anyone go near our stuff. As said above it's hard to see what use someone's key is to a thief unless your car was parked literally next to where you were on the beach. I always think my phone is more stealable. I just put it under my pants etc in my bag on the basis someone would have to rummage quite obviously to steal it.

GiantToadstool · 18/07/2021 21:45

Bonbonours. Same here! This thread is really odd to read to me.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/07/2021 21:54

I always just leave them in the beach bag, never occurred to me to do anything else

GenderApostatemk2 · 18/07/2021 22:03

I have a beach bag/cool bag that I made a secret pocket in the lining at the bottom. I’ve also wrapped stuff up in kitchen roll in a tupperware box with snacks on top.

HalloHello · 18/07/2021 22:05

Zipped pocket of my back, never even occured to me to keep them on my person. More likely to get lost in the sea than be stolen.

Bargebill19 · 18/07/2021 23:22

I am really surprised by this. It would not occur to me to leave any of my belongings let alone a phone or keys unattended, nor to ask total strangers to keep an eye out. Surely you wouldn’t do it elsewhere like a coffee shop? Or leave a bag in display or phone in a locked car? What’s so special about a beach that makes things less stealable. Would insurance cover such avoidable losses? Eg stolen or damaged.

Genuinely puzzled.

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/07/2021 23:34

Inside a ziplock bag and dug into the sand underneath the picnic blanket.

OatyBarKid · 18/07/2021 23:46

@ILoveAnOwl funnily enough I was just speaking with dh about this! We've decided we'd start with small lockers for electrical items, possibly as a charging point in there too and then move on to fridge lockers for drinks and food. Grin

Larger lockers in a beach hut or something though to keep with the aesthetic of the beach...

But I'm not that far away and can still see my bag. I wouldn't leave it if I was going to be miles away. Equally I would leave it at a table in a cafe while I went to the counter.

I would never ask a stranger to watch it for me though, that's a bit odd.

Bargebill19 · 19/07/2021 11:24

See I’m thinking -!I can’t run as fast as the person who may steal it or the dog who would pee on it on a beach mat. Being within sight would not change that.
With the cafe - how many bags have been robbed whilst hung on the backs of chairs that people are sat on.
Please don’t leave it out of reach don’t become the next statistic.
