I don't understand 'call me by your name'

There's a film, and now a song about it. Why would you want have someone else call you by their name? Is is supposed to be romantic in some way? Am I being a bit of a wet blanket to think that it would be confusing rather than romantic? Is it a reference to something that came before the film/book and the song?

I'm usually the first to think that a storyline is abusive, but I really enjoyed the film and thought it romantic.

However I do get what you mean, as TC looked younger than 17 and AH definitely looked older than 24, looked like he was in his 30's.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 29/06/2021 17:35

It’s also the first line of “The One And Only” by Cheney Hawkes. Call me, call me by your name, call me by your number….

No that goes Call me, call me by MY name, call me by my number.

@Br3style

I like the song very catchy but the video is abit ott on the Satan vibes for me so ruined it
Yes, I hadn't seen the video before I linked it as I've only heard it on the radio in the car. I did raise my eyebrows, but I'm at that age now where music isn't what it used to be. Grin

Oh the Satan thing is because he’s been told to go to hell for being gay, and it put him in a serious depression, and then he thought well at least he’ll send it up. That’s what the video is about… v catchy tune! Love it!

Love the movie, only saw it a few months back and really made me feel like I was on holiday on a rainy day! Would’ve assumed the characters were more like 24 and 30, haven’t read the book Blush

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 29/06/2021 17:56

I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone but have a q about something the dad said at the end….

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/06/2021 18:06

Ask away...

EishetChayil · 29/06/2021 18:28

If you loved the book, do NOT read the sequel! It's all about Elio's dad having a sordid affair with a young girl he meets on a train. Blergh.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/06/2021 19:14

I enjoyed it, not as much as CMBYN obvs, but at least we got to find out where they ended up.

inmyslippers · 29/06/2021 19:21

I love that song! Candance Owens complaining got me onto it

NigellaSeed · 29/06/2021 19:24

I've read the book, they call out there own names, Elio!! And Ooooliver! I didn't get it, why would you do that.

Also, there's a bit with an apricot... Confused

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/06/2021 19:27

Its a peach!

NigellaSeed · 29/06/2021 19:29

Ah I thought it was an giant apricot, but maybe I'm just remembering the juice.

I actually liked the book. Wish I knew to only read the last 6 or so pages of the sequel.

NigellaSeed · 29/06/2021 19:39

Is armie hammer an arsehole? I thought he was just super into consentual BDSM and kinky stuff and his ex lover outed him? Is there more to it?

Tal45 · 29/06/2021 19:45

The whole thing was very weird to me. The father seemed to be living vicariously through his son wishing he'd slept with men too, told his son as a secret from his mother. The son looked/seemed very young and the whole peach thing was really TMI. I don't get the call me by your name thing either, it just doesn't make any sense to me.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2021 20:45

I love peaches, so I'm definitely never watching the film now just in case it puts me off them.

SirenSays · 29/06/2021 20:49

Haha then definitely don't read the book, the film has a milder version of the peach incident.

Kanaloa · 29/06/2021 20:52

I agree with a pp that casting was part of the issue - the characters are supposed to be 17 & 24, but Armie Hammer looked significantly older. I think the point of calling each other by their own names was that the feel as close as almost the same person? In the book there’s a pretty odd passage where the characters watch each other have a bowel movement and there’s a sort of idea of completely ‘belonging’ to each other and being as close as one person.

SimonJT · 29/06/2021 20:57

Isn’t referencing the fact that when you’re in love with someone it can feel as though you are one person.

ShadowKitty · 29/06/2021 20:58

Could 'call me by your name' mean that a person has a special name they use for their lover (eg darling, sweetheart etc) and you want them to use that special name for you?

TheGoodEnoughWife · 29/06/2021 21:00

I have taken it to mean call me by the name you call yourself because I am just like you, I am as good as you and you should treat me with the same respect you do yourself?

CorianderBee · 29/06/2021 21:04

Call me by your name is a 1980s book about a man falling in love with another male. It's basically Lil Nas saying 'I'm gay!' Because a lot of homophobes have said 'he's ok though even if he is gay because he doesn't rub it in your face' because he sang like country songs etc.

He's saying 'Look, it doesn't matter if you think I'm ok because if you hate gay people and think they're going to hell then you think that about me too. To make it clear, I'd rather gyrate on the devil than be the 'exception' to your homophobia.

CorianderBee · 29/06/2021 21:05

By 'Call me by your name' I'd assume it's a reference to the book/film and is essentially saying 'call me what I am'

CorianderBee · 29/06/2021 21:07

Well that's my opinion. Ofc. I'm not Lil Nas

grapewine · 29/06/2021 21:13

There's being into BDSM, and then there's him. I don't want to derail the thread, but Ready To Glare on YT has a video about it that I watched.
