Have you ever recognised someone on here?

I've spotted a colleague, and oh my gosh it's compulsive entertainment. She has given enough away to make her hugely identifiable and yet paints a very very rosy version of her life. I used to quite like her (other colleagues warned me she wasn't pleasant), but the embellishments on here and the snotty, comments she leaves on people's posts have made me change my opinion. It's taking all my might not to comment with Hmm or Biscuit on all her posts.

Have you ever realised who someone is, and did you say anything to them? Or did you, like me, just get the popcorn in?

Time to name change again.

Been recognised.
Recognised someone else.

I don’t over share stuff I wouldn’t do IRL without a name change, so it’s not the end of the world.

TheTuesdayPringle · 27/06/2021 04:58

Yes! I recognised someone who in real life is truly awful, probably the most unlikable person I've ever met in fact 😂
In here she was being quite reasonable, it was curious to see.

cupoftea2021 · 27/06/2021 05:03

If mn is her outlet or chance to be herself why ruin that.
Leave her to it.
I hate jealous or vindictive woman

StillCalmX · 27/06/2021 07:39

That would be interesting @cupoftea2021 @TheTuesdayPringle 's friend in real life was manipulated by society to be unlikeable when her true self is lovely, but luckily she has an outlet for her true self on mn. Confused

Was that directed at me? I'm not following. Recognising someone is not the same as identifying them.

Yes exactly. That's why I assumed *@cupoftea2021* was talking to someone else
MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/06/2021 08:20

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Yep, a neighbour!
Were they complaining about you 😂
SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 27/06/2021 08:24

I’ve recognised friends and been recognised. It’s fine. I don’t tend to post things I wouldn’t tell them in real life, and if I were to post about something very private, I’d NC. I assume my friends would do the same.

Theworldisquiethere · 27/06/2021 08:35

I recognised a school mum, her username is the same as her Instagram and she’s mentioned her kids names and a friends kids unusual name too.

I’ll admit I was nosy and looked at her other posts but all she talks about on here is how skinny she is!

SinkGirl · 27/06/2021 08:47

I’ve recognised one person, and made them aware of it in case they wanted to change usernames.

Anyone who knows me IRL would absolutely know exactly who I am if they read my posts under this username - way too many identifying things because I have posted a lot about difficulties with my twins and a very unusual accident I had! But I only post stuff I don’t mind people recognising under this name - I use other names if I’d rather people didn’t know it’s me!

SinkGirl · 27/06/2021 08:49

Oh and DH definitely knows this username if he ever wanted to look - I once sent him a link to a very funny thread, and he replied quoting my comment on it with a crying laughing face. He didn’t realise it was me but I had to take credit 😬

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/06/2021 08:53

One of my neighbours recognised me on MN. It was due to a comment I made on a MN Local thread which was pretty identifying. I didn't change my username though.

The4thForm · 27/06/2021 08:57

I know people here in RL. Can often tell their posts, but we always NC too. We’d know a lot about each other in RL, so not disclosing anything extra here online.

Umbongoumbongo999 · 27/06/2021 09:05

Yes, I recognised my sister. We are very close and she was posting around a very specific issue one of her children was dealing with. I never told her. I did see a few more of her posts including a rather eye opening AMA but did not deliberately seek her out. I haven't seen her in a few years and can only assume she has stopped posting or is regularly changing name.

For my part I name change occasionally and change key details around my dc/home situation so that I am not immediately recognisable. I often think if a poster decided to troll hunt me they would find lots of incongruities in my posting history.

stuckinarutatwork · 27/06/2021 09:09

Not on here, but I identified someone I know on the Bounty pregnancy forums years ago. She was my mum's friend's daughter so not particularly well known to me but still interesting reading Smile

HoneyzAiy · 27/06/2021 09:13

I recognised my neighbour. I had my suspicions it was her because she was posting something quite specific about the neighbour on the other side, who she had a falling out with. Then she updated with a picture of the offending car (it was a parking one!) and I recognised it straight away! I never said anything to her but a few days later, the neighbour she fell out with came and told me that she’d seen a post about herself on mn and did I know anything about it! I stayed well out of that one.

Fishsouper · 27/06/2021 09:15

I can get sloppy with my detail withholding so name change every few posts

squiglet111 · 27/06/2021 09:20

I've spotted a few people. Don't want to give details so I don't get spotted myself! Lol

TidyDancer · 27/06/2021 09:22

I recognised a friend of a friend on the baby names forum once. I did tell her in case she wanted to name change for anything personal but I don't remember if she did and I've forgotten the details now anyway!

Walkingtheplank · 27/06/2021 09:32

I recognised my friend who was dying at the time.

She was on a thread about cancer being hugely supportive to other people despite knowing that her cancer was untreatable.

Always thinking of others ♥️

SnoopyLights · 27/06/2021 09:46

I recognised one person, and name-changed to tell her.

She had posted something on here that she also posted word for word on all her social media, and so I imagine she was recognisable to a lot of people.

She had a memorable user-name, posting style, and made a lot of posts as well, and although I didn't go digging through her posting history, I knew I had seen her posts quite often and could remember certain things she had discussed.

So I felt it was only right to say that I'd recognised her from that post and let her decide if she wanted to name change or not.

I didn't tell her who I was in real life, and I name-changed to contact her. I'm glad because not long afterwards in real life she showed her true colours and now we are not in contact. I bumped into her once after that, and I think she was expecting to be called out on her behaviour, but instead I was polite and friendly, and she clearly hated that more than if I'd told her what I thought of her.

I used to share quite a lot on here, and probably still do share more than ideally I should. The rip-off stories in the online media and so called newspapers put me off using the site for a while. I left for quite a long time, but came back for the feminism Grin

Yes . Posted her actual salary. That said, think I've been recognised too.

HowdenMinster · 28/06/2021 10:11

The person I have spotted has posted both her salary, her husband's, and how much savings they have in the bank! Shock

Bonkers.

I pre-recognized someone once!

They’d posted asking for advice on two local schools, and pondered whether their mixed-race children in Year R and Year 3 would fit in ok, so it wasn’t a big stretch to spot them when they duly turned up a few months later.
