Hello! Just as the title says really. I have a newborn and am starting to have some visitors but am stuck for ideas for easy lunches, brunches or even snacks.

Smoked salmon with cream cheese & bagels

Soup and crusty rolls

Mozzerella & tomato & basil salad

Houmous with crackers & bits like olives etc

Congrats on your newborn! Nobody will be expecting you to go to any effort so don't stress too much about it!

PurBal · 24/06/2021 16:04

I'd tell them to bring their own food to be honest. Otherwise I think things like quiche, nice bread and cheese, pasta salads are quite nice and can be made (or bought) in advance.

shouldistop · 24/06/2021 16:04

I honestly wouldn't be feeding people if you have a newborn. Visitors can bring you food or not visit over a meal time.

I wouldn't be making lunch for visitors with a newborn, unless you want to of course. I'd just buy some nice biscuits and cakes and offer those, or a sandwich at the absolute most. I agree with above poster that no one will expect you to make anything extravagant.

Ahhh thank you @octopusrus @PurBal
@shouldistop @cookiecreampie

Good ideas and also have made me feel better. I was beginning to feel the pressure of it all.

Do you need to give them lunch? If so quiche otherwise coffee and a nice bit of cake. They have come to see you and the baby, not for the food.

prettyvisitor · 24/06/2021 16:20

Blimey, I'd be asking them to bring lunch! And if I was visiting someone with a newborn over lunchtime I'd definitely take the food!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 24/06/2021 16:21

If visitors want food, they can bring it themselves. You do not need to host with a newborn.

idontlikealdi · 24/06/2021 16:23

You have a newborn, they bring the food, make drinks and do the washing up!

EssentialHummus · 24/06/2021 16:25

Yeah, don’t get into all that. If you want to get a quiche out of a packet and put some leaves next to it by all means but at this stage imo it’s quick visits, visitors cuddle baby / perhaps bring you a meal or help you with something if you need it, then fuck off. Not: you spend ages cooking while trying to feed LO, visitors hang around for ages at their convenience.

Triffid1 · 24/06/2021 16:27

Totally, don't do actual entertaining. Blimey. At best, make sure the house is stocked with bread, ham, cheese, pate and a few lettuce leaves and if guests want to eat they can make sandwiches, and one for you while they're at it.

yeahdarling · 24/06/2021 16:28

I never provided lunch.

I had a selection of nice biscuits or cake bars I put out. To be honest I doubt anyone turns up to a house with a newborn expecting to be fed a meal. If they are they should bring food for u and them!

My best visitors turned up with food for us both and washed up after!

TH22 · 24/06/2021 16:29

I just made sure we had a mega stash of biscuits. Don't feel pressurised to feed anyone. Any person visiting a new parent should not expect to be fed!

purplecorkheart · 24/06/2021 16:33

I wouldn't be providing a meal. Neither would I be worrying about making them tea. coffee or drinks. Just point them in the direction of kettle.

Whatabouttery · 24/06/2021 16:35

I would always take food when visiting anyone with a newborn, certainly wouldn't expect catering of any sort!

Just10moreminutesplease · 24/06/2021 16:36

What?! No, people bring you delicious food when you have a newborn. You don’t need to be running around after guests.

Congratulations on your newborn Flowers.

Viviennemary · 24/06/2021 16:40

I don't think anyone would expect more than tea and biscuits unless they've had a longish drive to get to you. It wouldn't enter my head to take food along. Oops.

thinkfast · 24/06/2021 16:42

Ask the visitors to bring you lunch!!!!

kayde12 · 24/06/2021 17:38

Aww you all have made me feel so much better. Thank you!

I was truly starting to worry about being a crap host, also because it’s our new house too.

I’ll make sure I have plenty of biscuits, some milk, tea and coffee stocked up when we can.

You've got a newborn, THEY should be bringing YOU lunch.

CarolinaWeeper · 24/06/2021 17:58

I agree that most visitors brought US food when I had a newborn. At most we put out some cheese and crackers or a packet of biscuits.

CarolinaWeeper · 24/06/2021 18:00

Actually my brother as a congratulations present ordered a Tesco delivery to my house and stocked us up with no-faff meals....ready meals, quiches and pies, meats and cheeses etc. I still say it's the best present I received after having a baby!

Mischance · 24/06/2021 18:07

I also think you should ask them to bring lunch.

But.........here's a simple idea ....

  • wrap some individual chicken breasts in foil with a sliced tomato in each. When cooked stick onto plates with some microwave rice and ready-washed leaves.
Here's another......
  • get some ready meals!

Congrats on new baby!

cocoloco987 · 24/06/2021 18:10

Pesto pasta (from a jar), bagged salad, tear up a mozzarella ball, and shop bought garlic bread. Easier than making a load of sandwiches and bits

StevieNix · 24/06/2021 18:30

You have a newborn they should be bringing you food! The most I would do is shove a quiche in front of them, or a pack of biscuits. Get them to make you tea/coffee as well!
