Driving hates

After unbelievably seeing 2 people this week driving on main roads with digs on their laps, what 3 things really annoy you about other drivers, ignoring using a phone, speeding and tailgating. Apart from the doggy one, mine are using earphones when driving, and placing phone/ sat nav in right in front of the driver, or under the rear view mirror.

When I leave work, I need to turn right out of our gate which is about 200 yards from a fairly major junction with traffic lights. The number of people who stop to let me out (without seeming to notice that the flow of fast moving traffic from the right prevents me leaving the driveway) then either pull a face or shout at me for not pushing across said fast moving traffic is ridiculous! Thank you for letting me out but I don't want my car T boned!

Kanaloa · 24/06/2021 16:45

Tailgating, especially if the person is going over the speed limit

Revving/flashing pedestrians as they are crossing the road or at the lights.

Waving other drivers out into traffic then being irate if they don’t go out - it’s the drivers job to make sure they are coming out safely

Also ditherers. Especially at big roundabouts or junctions when everyone is waiting

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/06/2021 17:06

School parking. If you have to drive across the pavement onto a grass verge (no drop curves), is not a parking space. If the only place left for pedestrians is the middle of the road, watch out for them. The lollipop lady isn't standing in the middle of the road for fun, its because children are crossing.

I can see the school from my window yet worry about my 10yo walking alone due to dangerous driving. And it seems to be black range rovers as the worst...

People who don’t give way when the cars are parked on their side of the road.

DinosaurDiana · 24/06/2021 17:10

People in front of you who stop the flow of traffic to let someone out from a side road, when a quick look in your mirror shows a massive gap coming up when they could have got out anyway.

DinosaurDiana · 24/06/2021 17:12

People in a side road who nose out to try and get you to stop on a main road and let them out. No.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/06/2021 17:33

People who don’t know the width of their vehicle and make a meal of passing obstacles.

They usually have a fish symbol on the back of their car. The fish symbol is a red flag for incompetent driving.

IShouldntPostBut · 24/06/2021 18:23

@Percyprod

Now here's a mystery perhaps someone can answer. Why do so many drivers stop a car's length from the white line at traffic lights, rather than up to the white line?
I stop back a bit so folks turning onto my road have a bit more space. I think it's helpful for lorries, drivers with trailers, etc.

In line I try to allow a half car-length to escape if needed

Oblomov21 · 24/06/2021 18:38

People who drive really slowly, 10-20 mph below the speed limit.

merryhouse · 24/06/2021 19:35

can we get @ReasoningWithUnreasonable and @alloalloallo to fight it out over slip roads?

RiderGirl · 24/06/2021 20:26

The fucking Auto 40s - people who drive everywhere at 40 mph, hurry up before I die of old age. Usually it's holidaymakers. Also, people who cannot reverse but drive down country lanes. I'm usually happy to reverse, but once I got annoyed and made the other person reverse, and then sat and watched in absolute amazement as they backed their car into the hedge ABOUT 20 TIMES while reversing about 20 metres, how do they even get a driving license??

olivethegreat · 24/06/2021 21:59

I'm a terrible driver . I hesitate at junctions so that dd who has several years to go before becoming a driver tells me to go. And I slow down on a country road when it's narrow and another car is coming the other way probably not always necessarily . And I'm really bad at joining motorways. My spatial awareness has got worse as I age and I find it hard to judge distances for things like this so am definitely over cautious. Tips welcome!.

Sorry all!

I was definitely definitely taught not to indicate if going straight over a roundabout though. Only if going first exit or third (or more) I do indicate right now normally going if straight over (switching to left after passing the previous exit) just because I've noticed everyone else does!

FakeColinCaterpillar · 24/06/2021 22:12

People parking next to you in empty car parks.

People with big cars who fail to understand smaller cars can take longer to get to speed.
Tailgating me won’t help.

Drivers hanging out of a street so everyone has to swerve around them.

Lack of signalling. Revving engines. Confusion who has the right of way at roundabouts (like..it’s not hard!). People telling you to go when you don’t feel safe, I’ll wait thanks.

You know you shouldn't be driving then, right? Sorry, but it's true.

I can confirm in London we generally do merge in turn properly as lots of junctions have 2 lanes that turns into 1.

People who annoy me -
Impatient drivers, if someone is waiting for a space/can't see from behind the bus please don't beep.

People who change their mind about taking an exit on a motorway and drive over the hatching to pull out in front of me 😱

E-scooters - these people have a death wish.

Cyclists who weave around buses outside Waterloo station, the bus cannot suddenly lurch to one side so don't cut right in front of them from their blind spot.

People who speed

People who go waay to slow

Lorry drivers who try to overtslr another lorry on a hilly bit on the m4 and end up causing both lanes to go at 50 for a couple of miles.

People who don't use the left lane on the motorway

This all day long.

It drives me spare when people do random stuff not hitherto described in the highway code. Things like slowing to a near stop on a motorway to let traffic in off the slip road.

noblegreenk · 24/06/2021 22:35

Not using indicators

Slow drivers. I don't mind someone doing 35 in a 40, but when they're doing doing 30 in a 40 it takes the piss.

Drivers that pull out of side roads forcing you to brake. Then proceed to tootle along doing 10mph under the speed limit. This infuriates me!!!

People who dont use the correct lane at a multi-lane roundabout.

People who park on parent and child spaces when they haven't got a child with them. OR they do have a child but they're a 12yr old.

People who park to close in parking bays and you struggle to get back into your car. I had to climb into my car through the boot and then clamber over the seats when I was 7 months pregnant.

FixTheBone · 24/06/2021 22:39

People in petrol stations who see the person in front of you leave, then drive all the way around and reverse in, so you then have to sit and watch them fill up and go and pay before you can move...

TheGriffle · 24/06/2021 23:20

There’s two bits of road near me where people piss me off nearly every time I drive on them.

No1: two lanes up to a roundabout, left hand lane is a bus lane until halfway up the road then the road signs and road markings clearly show you can move over and can go straight in.
Left hand lane is for left turns and straight on, right hand land lane for straight on (exiting onto the right hand lane off the roundabout) and right.

The amount of times people going straight on in the right hand lane, but then exit the roundabout onto the left hand lane. I’ve never used my horn more than on this roundabout. It pisses me off so much and I’ve had near misses where they’ve nearly driven into me as I’m in the left hand lane, going straight and exiting in the left hand lane when they try and drive into me.

No2. Another roundabout, left hand lane is for left and straight over. Right hand lane is for right turns. Left hand lane nearly always clear, right hand lane, nearly always queuing. So what do the dickheads do? Drive down the left hand lane and proceed to go right on the roundabout.

Rummikub · 25/06/2021 00:23

Lorries overtaking other lorries really really slowly on the motorway- effectively blocks two lanes of the motorway 😡

Even worse on the 4 lane motorways where I’ve seen 3 lorries taking up 3 lanes and taking ages to overtake each other

CoffeethenCrochet · 25/06/2021 00:59

Overtaking me in the new 20mph zones.

I'd much rather get to my destination quicker, but the signs all over the city show it's now 20mph so I'm driving exactly on 20, but I've been overtaken and/or tailgated to the point I'm tempted to take my foot off the accelerator and let them push me along Angry

olivethegreat · 25/06/2021 07:06

@Triffid1 I'm sure I irritate impatient people when I'm wait for a decent space before pulling out but I am safe, been driving 30 years no incidents at all not even a scratch on my car Grin. I see dangerous drivers every day and I'm not one of them ! And I'm brilliant at parking !

My ex used to honk people all over the place esp when cut up. I had a revelation after leaving him that if I didn't get angry at bad drivers then my day was better. I'm quite zen now when driving and very considerate - also since moving out of london I love it here as when turning right into a side road people allow people turning right into the main road to go first - and the merging of lanes is all done very politely and everyone says thank you .

I get irritated by speeding drivers in my village and people driving up my bum, which I completely ignore as I don't drive slowly .

PawsQueen · 25/06/2021 10:01

The roundabout near me
Two lanes
Left lane has left arrow only
Right lane has straight on arrow and right hand arrow
So the left lane is for first exit only, but no, people use it for second, and third exit Confused so when I cross the roundabout twice a day it's pretty guaranteed it will be a near miss

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 10:23

Oh yes the painfully slow lorry races where one might possible be a teeny bit faster than the other. The slowest overtake ever. I am sure a trucker will be along soon to educate us on why that's necessary.

That aside, lorry drivers are generally the most courteous on the motorway and flash their lights to let cars back into the lane or out etc.

Rummikub · 25/06/2021 13:25

Yes some are courteous. A lot are awful and cos they are so big it’s
scary.
I do alot of motorway driving and I think lorries should never be I’m lame 3 of 4. I worry about the idea of those driverless convoy lorries- imagine them overtaking each other for miles and miles!
