Driving hates

After unbelievably seeing 2 people this week driving on main roads with digs on their laps, what 3 things really annoy you about other drivers, ignoring using a phone, speeding and tailgating. Apart from the doggy one, mine are using earphones when driving, and placing phone/ sat nav in right in front of the driver, or under the rear view mirror.

People get soo weird about it don;t they @SpaceOp, like really furious.

I'm in the Midlands and DB in London, he got off the motorway here and the zip thing is in operation at the first set of lights (2 lanes going into one after the lights) He couldn't believe what he was seeing-he maintains that in London people know to do the zip but nobody was having any of it here.

safariboot · 23/06/2021 13:56

The lane is wide enough for your car. You do not need to have two feet of your vehicle over the centreline onto my side of the road.

You are supposed to have headlamps on the front of your vehicle. Not nuclear fusion reactors.

There are double yellow lines next to junctions for a reason, and the reason isn't for it to be your personal parking space. Now I need to use psychic powers to emerge safely.

And a cyclist one. They sell bike lights in Poundland. There's no excuse for not having them unless you are actually trying to get killed.

ReasoningWithUnreasonable · 23/06/2021 14:01

People who pull out from the slip roads expecting you to stop for them on a 70mph motorway/dual carriageway. The purpose of the lane is for you to approach slowly until you get a clearer view to give you enough time/room on the slip road to either speed up and join safely or wait for the car to pass and then join if it's safe. I've driven throughout Europe and people wait at the end of these lanes to join safely if there's not enough time and space to join. You shouldn't join if there's not enough space, just wait at the end of the lane until it is safe to go instead of blindly jumping in.

I've recently witnessed an accident because of this where a car pulled out from the slip road and jumped in front of a car thinking it had priority over the cars on the dual carriageway. This is why a lot of people drive on the middle lane so these idiots don't crash into you but that's another discussion.

People who when they are turning right (not at a junction) and there is a box in the road with an arrow, they sit across the box rather than in the box and block the entire lane behind them. I mean, why?

Not sure if that makes sense. Do I need to do a diagram?

MustardRose · 23/06/2021 14:09

People who pull out in front of you from a side road or driveway when there's nobody behind you and they could have waited a few seconds. Especially when they drive along in front of you and then turn off 100 yards up the road, holding you up a second time.

Undertaking on roundabouts.

Not indicating.

Massive 4x4s and SUVs driven by people who are so tiny they can barely see over the steering wheel and are incapable of manouevring in car parks because they can't see what they are doing.

The M40. Don't know why, but that particular road is insufferable.

The lane marking at the Black Cat junction on the A1.

kookiekook · 23/06/2021 14:11

People who drive a 20mph - maybe they're lost, drunk. old person with dementia, whatever - then stop dead without indicating or pulling over!

Happened to me earlier, if I wasn't already staying back because I could see this coming I'd've gone in to the back maybe. This one was an old old lady who was probably lost.

Not indicating on roundabouts.

Middle lane drivers, especially ones going 60mph on a duel carriageway so no one can get by.

People that drive on country lanes in the middle of the road and refuse to reverse into the hedge when they meet something coming. My MIL is this person.

Maybe in London, but we're not far outside of London and I can assure you, it's not something people know how to do around here!! See also when needed for merging to motorway....

To be fair, in London it might be more common because a) roadworks and b) lots of places don't have space for two lanes.

I am a good driver and am okay at parking. We have one large car which, when I need to, I can park and drive easily and, in fact, enjoy driving. BUT... I'm currently looking to buy a second car for me and I want something small because I'm 5ft4, with a disproportionately short body and it's just so annoying to be barely able to see over the steering wheel, especially when parking a large car!

alloalloallo · 23/06/2021 14:42

People who drive massively below the speed limit when there’s no good reason for it (weather condition/windy roads/etc). On the way to work this morning we were doing 24mph on a 50 mph limit road.

People who don’t understand merging and won’t let you in - we had some roadworks here for months on our dual carriageway. Huge signs all the way up it saying merge in turn/use both lanes but we ended up with massive queues in 1 lane and no one using the other lane as it was “pushing in” and no one would let anyone in who used the 2nd lane. Facebook groups were full of people losing their shit over it for months. At one point they had police out monitoring it.

People who don’t use slip roads properly - might just be a local thing but there’s a slip road onto our dual carriageway from an industrial estate. Instead of moving down the slip road and merging with the traffic, people stop at the top of the slip road and indicate (if you’re lucky). It’s a bit of a standing joke round here.

People who just blast across roundabouts without slowing down or looking. Some twat nearly hit me this morning when he pulled out, without looking when I was already on the roundabout. Happens every day at pretty much every roundabout.

People who don’t agree with road markings and make their own shit up and expect every other person to know and get very angry when they don’t. We have a junction near me where they changed the layout (2 years ago! and it’s very clearly signed). It makes much more sense now, but so many drivers ignore the new layout and then get very angry when they nearly drive into the side of you because you’re in the correct lane

Partey · 23/06/2021 14:46

Middle lane drivers. I live in the north east and the A1 often goes from 2 lanes to 3 so people basically sit in the middle lane as they don’t have to bloody confidence to use the road properly.

They spent ages adding a third land around Team Valley near the metro centre and it’s been a complete waste of time as everyone still sits in the middle

billyt · 23/06/2021 14:47

Twats who when turning right into a road cut the fucking corner, and usually without looking first.

Had the side of my car opened up like a tin of beans once by a 'driver' who did this. Then they stare into space rather than acknowledge their fuck up.

Who the fuck taught them that stunt? Cheers me up no end when they can't get by and have to reverse. I'm happy to stay still so they have to move.

As you can tell they really piss.me.off Grin

Oh, and on the subject of cars leaving a space when waiting at lights. In any queue, if you can see the bottom of the tyres of the vehicle in front over the leading edge of your bonnet, then you've left yourself enough room to get around in the event they stall/breakdown/can't move.

MondeoFan · 23/06/2021 14:55

Loads
Middle Lane hoggers- this is and always will be my biggest bug bear.
People in petrol station forecourts generally doing stupid things - not parking close enough to the pump, taking over 2 pumps, blaring music out etc etc
People with huge cars that don't know how to drive them
No indicators
Pulling out on me then going really slow
People that drive up my backside when I'm doing the speed limit
BMW drivers
Merc drivers
Audi drivers
Micra drivers
Van drivers

Everyone else is ok

MondeoFan · 23/06/2021 15:08

@NotTheCatsWhiskers I know exactly what you mean. It's a box you are meant to sit in to turn right so you don't hold up the free flowing traffic behind you. We have one near here and it's on my route to work so I'm driving past it 4 times a day as I drive home for my lunch and the amount of times I've seen a smallish car holding up all the traffic rather than sit in the box to turn

WhipperSnapperSteve · 23/06/2021 15:17

Indicators, or lack of, especially on roundabouts.

Shit lane discipline.

Cutting across my lane when turning.

40 in a 60 to 40 in a 30.

Obstructing wheelchairs/pushchairs by parking on the pavement.

Peach01 · 23/06/2021 15:18

When you're turning right at a junction and the person behind you is planning on turning left, they to drive up beside you completely obstructing your view of the oncoming traffic.

SedentaryCat · 23/06/2021 15:37

People who pootle along happily, admiring the scenery and having a lovely chat at 45mph on the dual carriageway. Only to turn into Michael Schumaker at the point you pull out to overtake.

The '38mph' king/queen, who insists on this speed, no matter what the speed limit.

Discourteous drivers in general. No need for it.

Many years ago a van driver ploughed into a chicane and blamed me because he didn't know whether I was going to stop or not. I wasn't...it was my right of way.

DeePlume · 23/06/2021 15:49

@WeAreTheHeroes

People who brake on two-lane country roads when another vehicle passes them on the other side of the road. Your lack of spacial awareness terrifies me

God yes. The other is people constantly braking going downhill on country lanes. Drop down a gear and try slowing down. If your foot is constantly on the brake then you are doing something wrong!

If you drive an automatic you can’t drop down a gear. You use the brakes to slow down.

What else are they supposed to do? Hang back until you’ve turned right even though their lane is clear?

If they’re turning left it’s likely they’ll turn first, leaving your field of vision clear again. If you’re turning right you shouldn’t make the turn unless you’re 100% sure it’s clear anyway.

Ooo yes!! This one!! SO annoying.
Peach01 · 23/06/2021 16:25

You'd think. They sit there and wait like it's 2 lanes. We have a junction that's terrible for it at the end of our road. Can't count how many times vans sit there waiting to move preventing the drivers who were (are) in front of them from getting out.

Bananarama101 · 24/06/2021 06:54

One I've noticed more recently is at 4-way traffic light junctions, if someone is turning right they just wait by the lights stopping anyone from going straight on or turning left, rather than actually moving out into the space in the middle where they should be.

I know what you mean. Happens a lot round my way - although mainly because the Council have painted the lines in places where there isn't physically room for two cars.

Similarly, on several large roundabouts in my area, if you follow the lane markings you cannot actually get into the correct position to leave the roundabout when you want to 🙄

There's a junction near us where so many people turning right don't pull far enough forward to trigger the right turn filter sensors. So annoying.
