Urgent hedgehog advice needed

Hoping for some reassurance as really worried
We have a few hedgehogs here always see them at night, anyway neighbour is mowing grass and obviously disturbed one who must have been asleep In undergrowth next to their fence. I was having a coffee and hedgehog ran out of undergrowth - really surprised me and luckily headed straight for the shed as the door was open. I watched him climb over things and it looks like he’s disappeared under some stuff in there. I have left a saucer of water in there and some hedgehog food my question is will he be okay in there for today and is he likely to come out when it gets dark, hate to think of him being in distress.
Thanks in advance 🦔

they shouldn't have sea fish due to the iodine (afaik, we had one over winter when I was a child some 30 years ago)

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 15:14

Eeeek
Don’t want to make them poorly
I do give them sappy cats leftovers (basically lumps of meat with gravy licked off) but I do avoid the fishy varieties left overs .
Best to stay on safe side I think

My little visitors seem to be really thriving on the hedgehog mix
I didn’t even know such a thing existed until somebody told me, I think the conservationists are keen to ensure they’re protected as much as possible as they’re endangered now
I realise there are people who think feeding wildlife is wrong and I agree up to a point but where would you draw a line ? Most people feed birds don’t they.

And I don’t actually consider them as wild anymore - more like family pets now 😍

I feed Hector kitten food, the dry stuff, i have loads of local cats so we made him a ‘cafe’ a large plastic box upturned so lid is easy to lift off and on with a square cut out big enough for hedgehog but too small for cats etc, works a treat, such fun to put the camera inside and watch him ( or her) come in and scoff, he crunches it so loudly 😁

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 15:29

@StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes
That would be ‘hectors house’ then?
Or are you too young to remember that ?
Sounds like he’s got it made and is part of the Eccles family now
Thanks for looking out for him it’s lovely to hear and most people love hedgehogs I think 🥰

I do remember and have a chuckle at it often, he really has become one of us lol, we remeber every night to take a handful down to the cafe for him and presumably his lay friend, we arehoping to see babies 👍🏻

theheartofthematter · 13/06/2021 15:50

Oh yay. Hedgehog chat! I found two in my garden last week. A massive one and a smaller one so I don't know if a pair or mum and baby but they are called Henry and Hettie. I have fed them every night and now have a hedgehog house that I am going to sand and put down for them. I was so happy to see them, I know they are in decline so am determined to do my bit to help the population!

I also read that bird food is not good for them, DH feeds the birds as if they are his pets and has had to switch to no mess stuff to avoid Hector getting his little paws into the bird tray that catches any dropped seed. 🦔🦔🦔🦔

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 16:03

We need a 🦔 version of litter tray

It's meal worms that are bad for them, so wouldn't worry too much about dropped birdfood - it attracts slugs at night so they'll appreciate that!

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 17:28

Can’t believe something so cute chomps on slugs 🤢

Foofbrush · 13/06/2021 17:40

Nuts and sunflower seeds from bird seed aren't good for hedgehogs, and they will only eat slugs and snails if they are starving (their main food is caterpillers and beetles, they get lungworm from slugs)

A big dish of clean water that they can't tip up is very important for hedgehogs and other animals at the moment - as the weather gets hotter, they have to travel further and further to find a drink

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 17:50

I’ve got a huge pool of water weighed down with a brick for them, I can’t really pick up all the peanuts though ……I’d be here all day mind you the wood pigeons don’t leave much behind

The squirrels have their own fresh water too - high up, it’s cute watching them drink. They drink quite a lot

Came to visit again tonight, very noisy eater

SappysCurry · 13/06/2021 23:13

I love him ❤️
The fact he has a little routine and has planned it all out ….‘right off to the food now’
Its beyond cute to me ❤️
Do you have low lighting in your kitchen at night as they tend to avoid bright lights it hurts their little eyes.

We've had hedgehogs visit for the last 4 years. DD and DH built 'hoggy diner ' when we first noticed them. The first year DS and I were worried about one hog and so weighed him/her to make sure they were within a good weight for hibernation. Haven't had to do that since as they know they are onto a good thing! This year we've spotted two. I hope they are a pair!

Hoggy diner 😃 I think they move in and never leave ‘base’ I know they wander around a lot at night but I’m convinced they return to their ‘pads’🦔❤️

They do! It sounds like a steam train chuffing!!!! BiscuitGrinGrin

mrwalkensir · 14/06/2021 22:24

still can't get over Ted27s visitor. Ours was much more "nippy" n the garden last night going to the food plate. Wonder if this means that she's given birth :)

theheartofthematter · 15/06/2021 21:52

I discovered 'Henry' enjoying the water bowl last night. I'm relieved to know they have found it and make use of it x
