Does anyone else play the Wikipedia game just by themselves?

I know it’s a bit tragic but quite often if I want to look something up on Wikipedia I won’t just search for it, I’ll go to the Wikipedia home page and try to find my way to it from there.

Just now for example, watching Teletubbies with DS I was curious about where it was filmed. Found my way to Teletubbies from the home page in impressively few steps!

I know there is an actual Wikipedia game for this but I never find that at much fun.

Cool.
I went Lucy Barbell- French-English-Boris Johnson-Rachel Johnson-BBC-CBEEBIES-Tellietubbies! Grin

FelicityBeedle · 08/06/2021 15:38

I completed a very slow homepage to Charlotte Ritchie in 9 steps. Who’s going to beat me?
Homepage
Booker prize
Margaret Atwood
Handmaids Tale
Channel 4
Bake off
Nicola Coughlan
TaskMaster
Charlotte Ritchie.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 15:44

Can anyone help with step one question (feeling this may be stupid q). Felicity did you choose ‘Booker prize’ or did you randomly generate it ??

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 15:45

Maybe my homepage is unusual but I have hundreds of links I could choose there - seems almost cheating for a game (which I love the sound of) to be able to choose from so many ??

JammyDodgersandPeas · 08/06/2021 15:47

I love this game, I never realised that other people played it too! Grin

FelicityBeedle · 08/06/2021 15:48

I chose one of the homepage links, doesn’t feel like cheating to me.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 15:54

Ta felicity. Assumed a random generator start to make it more er random Grin

Taliskerskye · 08/06/2021 16:09

@heronlanding
How about

Henry VII

Taliskerskye · 08/06/2021 16:10

@FelicityBeedle @HeronLanyon
Oh I thought the point of the game was to chose a person/ thing first
Then go to the homepage and see how long it takes you to get there?

FelicityBeedle · 08/06/2021 16:12

@Taliskerskye
That’s what I do. So I picked Charlotte Ritchie, then skimmed the homepage for a link a thought would be a good start then kept clicking

Ulysses · 08/06/2021 16:15

Coincidentally, I did Charlotte Ritchie the other day for something but think I used IMDB.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 16:15

I’m gonna may some point sounds fun.
I’m going to think of a person.
Go to wiki homepage (scrolling allowed I’m assuming)
Probably then choose category
Then go from there.

Maybe choose random generator instead of a homepage link - that could be tough !

Ta either way op. Another way to increase my non-work screen time Grin

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 08/06/2021 16:18

@Taliskerskye

I did it in:
George I Rakoczi
Thirty years war
Philip III of Spain
James VI and I
Henry VII

AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2021 16:20

@HeronLanyon

Being stupid here but op when you went to Wikipedia how did you get to your first step (Royal Ballet in your example)?
They put random different articles on their home page every day. Sometimes you can find one that’s a good starting point.

I've seen videos on TikTok of people playing this but never given it a go! First attempt and I got from the homepage to Doctor in 7 steps.

takingmytimeonmyride · 08/06/2021 16:25

I decided to aim for pokemon (DS is playing it right now)

Main page - article about SS Minesotan
World War II
Japan
Japanese popular culture
Video games in Japan
Pokemon

Such fun!

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 16:26

My home page story today is the USS Mississippi - can’t imagine finding Royal ballet in there as my very first click but no matter!

Taliskerskye · 08/06/2021 16:27

@ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun
Good work!!

OP think of one, then we can all see who gets there quickest.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 16:27

Minnesotan perhaps. Grin

AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2021 16:29

It doesn’t have to be the featured article, any of the stuff on the home page will do. The ballet one seems to have gone now so they must have refreshed the page since I did it.

Wiki has a feature to bring you to a random page. If you're on mobile (like me) open the Wiki main page en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Next to the Wiki heading, there should be 3 horizontal bars. Click on those and some options will drop down, Random is one of them.

The same exists on desktop I'm sure, just can't see the layout myself Smile

BarbaraofSeville · 08/06/2021 16:32

Is this a slightly more educational version of the Kevin Bacon game?

SpeedRunParent · 08/06/2021 16:33

I wouldn't have the patience but I applaud you ingenuity. 😂

Mumteedum · 08/06/2021 16:33

Ohh I used to play this online in this game. Thanks for reminding me. I just won a round Wink

AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2021 16:34

Ok, who can get from en.m.wikipedia.org to...

cocktail umbrellas

In the fewest clicks?
