DH and I

ArseholeLemonade · 03/06/2021 22:02

I've name changed for this Grin

I've recently noticed an increase in the incorrect usage of "and I" on mumsnet.
To know which one to use, always take the other person out of the sentence and see if it makes sense.

DH and me went to the shops = Me went to the shops. Wrong.
DH and I went to the shops = I went to the shops. Right.

I bought some cake for DH and I = I bought some cake for I. Wrong.
I bought some cake for DH and me = I bought some cake for me. Right!

My 8 year old is currently learning this at school so I thought I'd share.

Sorry. As you were.

DH and I

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/06/2021 23:56

"It's DH and I's anniversary next week"

Which one, though? Is it you're 20 years anniversary?

Checkingout811 · 03/06/2021 23:58

@FunTimes2020 thanks I’ll definately lend it from you.

Your wellcome but I think you should defiantly lend it Grin

It's also amazing how many people don't know when to use who or whom. All you have to do is to answer your own question but with 'he' or 'him' and then it's obvious: 'who' corresponds to 'he' (neither ends in 'M') and 'whom' corresponds to 'him' (both end in 'M').

"Who does this belong to?" [or "to who does this belong?"]
"This belongs to he."
Obviously both wrong.

"Whom does this belong to?" [or "to whom does this belong?"]
"This belongs to him."
Both correct.

"I spoke to a man whom informed me that it was Monday."
"Him informed me that it was Monday."
Obviously both wrong.

"I spoke to a man who informed me that it was Monday."
"He informed me that it was Monday."
Both correct.

I think you mean 'lend it of me'

You're right, OP.
Married At First Sight Australia was so bad for this. It really made me cringe!

KarmaViolet · 04/06/2021 00:18

I did a course with someone who was adamant that this was wrong, and that "she went to the bank with John and I" was correct.

She and I have both just been moved to a role where we will have to see each other. Or, as she would say, me and her have just been moved to that role.

You got that one of my "mistakes" was a deliberate joke but not the other?

Blueskytoday06 · 04/06/2021 07:10

@DappledThings ooops straight over my head. Maybe I'm an offender ha.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 04/06/2021 07:11

I feel mean saying this one but I’m going to say it anyway.

There was a woman on the TV talking about furlough and she said ‘I just can’t loan anymore money’ Whilst I knew what she meant, she just sounded like an idiot. I wanted to say to her, maybe you don’t have any money because you keep lending people money! It’s BORROW, not LEND!!

DappledThings · 04/06/2021 07:11
@DappledThings ooops straight over my head. Maybe I'm an offender ha.
To be fair I was taking a risk!

Morgan12 · 04/06/2021 07:14
