I've name changed for this Grin

I've recently noticed an increase in the incorrect usage of "and I" on mumsnet.
To know which one to use, always take the other person out of the sentence and see if it makes sense.

DH and me went to the shops = Me went to the shops. Wrong.
DH and I went to the shops = I went to the shops. Right.

I bought some cake for DH and I = I bought some cake for I. Wrong.
I bought some cake for DH and me = I bought some cake for me. Right!

My 8 year old is currently learning this at school so I thought I'd share.

Sorry. As you were.

I think knowing when to use 'whom' might be a bit niche these days. Not quite the same as fretting about split infinitives, that is just a bit wanky, but I think it might be a bit if a losing, or should that be loosing, battle.

Sadly, I think you maybe write (Smile)- but I've never quite understood the issue about split infinitives. I was always told that it originated with pompous scholars who believed Latin to be automatically more educated than English and the model for 'good' language use. Of course you wouldn't split an infinitive in Latin, because it's a single word; but I really don't see the issue in English.

To boldly go/to go boldly/boldly to go - they all look correct to me and it's just personal choice, style and tone as to which one you'd use.

Oh split infinitives are a load of Victorian twaddle. Fowler, who wrote that book on English usage, said it was all pretty much about who was u and who was non u, the scholars v the oiks. Pretty much applies today too.

BigYellowHat · 22/10/2021 22:02

Thanks @ArseholeLemonade This winds me up so much!!! My old boss was terrible for this. I think people think it makes them sound ‘posh’ when actually they sound like plonkers for getting it wrong!

BigYellowHat · 22/10/2021 22:03

@DappledThings

Myself and DH would like to thank yourself. I would of not known this otherwise.

Wink

Haha, I notice that call centre people sometimes tie themselves up in knots doing this!
ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 22/10/2021 22:03

Is their a point to this thread?

BigYellowHat · 22/10/2021 22:07

I’m on a roll here. I hate it when people don’t know the difference between lend and borrow. There was a woman on here worried about not having enough money and she said ‘I keep having to lend money’ My fingers were just itching to write ‘well stop giving all your money away then’!!

But I thought I’d sound like a bit of a dick 😂

campion · 22/10/2021 22:44

This is the worse thread I've ever read. Its took me all night and I think your all loosers.
It could of been more helpfull x

hilbil21 · 22/10/2021 22:59

Love you OP!!

SarahDippity · 23/10/2021 00:28

I’m in Ireland and a legacy of Hiberno-English is the use of myself (mé féin), and although I hate myself for it, I find myself writing emails ‘thank you for meeting with Jane and myself today’ rather than ‘Jane and me’ because it feels warmer (though wronger).

Theimpossiblegirl · 23/10/2021 00:28

MasterChef judges do this. DH rolls his eyes when I correct them.

You're cooking for Greg and I.

No, because you're not cooking for I.
