How expensive is Miller and Carter?

It's my 30th birthday next month and I'd like to go somewhere fancier than normal for a meal with DH. I looked on the website but they don't actually show prices (that I can see). Roughly what does an average meal for two cost at M&C? Neither of us tend to have starters so just a main, dessert and a drink or two each. I know everyones prices will differ but just a ballpark sort of figure...

A few recommendations for you near to you :)

Ole ole (Lincoln) tapas
El toro (Bawtry) tapas
China rose (bawtry) Chinese
The bronze pig (Lincoln)
Lawson’s bar and bistro (Lincoln)
The bell at coleby
Marrowbone and cleaver kirmington but might not be special enough for 30th birthday.
All good independent restaurants near your area :)

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/05/2021 21:48

Harvester and M&C are owned by the same company.

SonicStars · 18/05/2021 21:51

I hope someone can recommend somewhere good. Maybe try TripAdvisor forums if no luck here. I definitely agree that miller and carter is not a place to go as a treat. It doesn't feel special, just expensive. I've spent ages trying to work out their market. Closest I can get is it's where the company is picking up the tab. Or like people have said up thread that it's a comfortable harvester type choice - a safe pair of hands for people who don't consider it expensive.

changename7634 · 18/05/2021 21:54

@SonicStars we just don't have a steak house within an hour of here (barring Beefeater 😂). Steak is so hit or miss in a pub or similar, we know we'll get a good steak there, not been disappointed yet. We eat at lots of independent restaurants for other types of cuisine.

NashvilleQueen · 18/05/2021 21:55

Is there a Hawksmoor anywhere near?

peaceanddove · 18/05/2021 21:55

They're just a gray Harvester. No thanks.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 18/05/2021 22:03

@NashvilleQueen

Is there a Hawksmoor anywhere near?
Don’t think so. Only Manchester, London and Edinburgh.

I’ve had my last 3 special occasions there and will be choosing them for my wedding anniversary next month.

@Workyticket from your description (and username) I’m guessing you’ve just described my local M&C!

Up by Fulwell Mill?

TattiePants · 18/05/2021 22:35

That’s the one. I’ve actually never been but agree Newcastle has always been pretty good.

mrsbyers · 18/05/2021 22:36

I never order the steak , the roast chicken with creamed corn and sprouting brocolli is delicious

NeverTrustaRabbit · 18/05/2021 22:37

No5 in Retford is a lovely independent restaurant - the food is fabulous and the setting is quaint. Ne er had a bad meal there.

China Rose in Bawtry - fab food- if you eat early can feel a bit rushed

El Toro in Bawtry - nice and relaxed.

The Sun - either Retford or Everton -gorgeous food. My friend had steak on Friday night and was very impressed (the Retford branch).

All better than M&C for a treat

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/05/2021 22:40

Over priced, over rated , tiny portions, luke warm food. Don't bother.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/05/2021 08:45

@SappysCurry - heh heh! yes, I remember the slice of pizza with jacket potato and coleslaw combination Grin.

I actually worked in a Berni Inn one summer when I was at Uni. Used to dread Saturday nights as it was always heaving!

PeckyOwl · 19/05/2021 11:21

Oh yes, excellent steak at The Sun in Everton. Much better than M&C

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 19/05/2021 11:24

It's way overpriced. Quality wise, it's like a beefeater but with smaller portions and double the cost. Have been to a few different ones and disappointed each time!

Oceangirl82 · 20/05/2021 10:43

If you want to go to M&C go for it! We have a lovely one in Grantham, with very good food! Went there Tuesday lunchtime, had the set menu two courses + drinks for two £41.
Each to their own, don’t be swayed my MN if that’s what you fancy!

A fairly balanced Jay Rayner review here, which includes prices:

Cas112 · 20/05/2021 11:13

look at the menu

allmycats · 20/05/2021 12:11

Crown Hotel at Bawtry have a new Robata Grill menu. Lovely steaks. Look online, all newly refurbished as well and Bawtry is excellent for a decent night out.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/05/2021 12:13

The Newcastle M&C is quite good, but the Newcastle Tomahawk is even better.

Do you have a Tomahawk near you?

motogogo · 20/05/2021 13:01

If you have a Middletons near you. Try there, the platters are great and very filling, never have room for dessert

motogogo · 20/05/2021 13:04

Oh the prices are on the Miller and Carter website btw. Normal steak prices to be honest.

Littleroundone · 20/05/2021 13:09

I think it's overhyped too. That lettuce wedge thing with the steak is just bizarre and I thought it was strange having one sauce on that and then another for your steak! Too many flavours going on. I think it's fairly overpriced for what it is. Although the service is fairly good though any time we've been.
Tbh I prefer my husband's steaks as I am always disappointed when I get one when I'm out!

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 20/05/2021 13:12

@Chicchicchicchiclana

I'm sure you can find something better than a Miller & Carter restaurant for your special occasion!
