I'm a scared British Jew

As I'm writing this, I've had another whats app messagw asking for prayers for a rabbi in London hospitalised, who has just been beaten up. I'm scared.

I'm getting messages from my synagogue and kids schools about walking in groups for safety. Neighborhood group posting pics of cars where I live smashed up. People driving by waving Palestinian flags and screaming anti semitic abuse and entering shops intimidating people. This is Manchester not London, where it's even worse.
I've been sent screenshots of Facebook posts with comments like rape Jewish women. Rape their mothers. Rape their daughters. Not rape the Israelis. Rape the Jews. British Jews.

I'm preparing for the shavuous festival and at 8.50 pm I'll be turning off my phone for just over two days and be cut off from social media and news. But I'm dreading what I'll see when I go back online on Tuesday night. I'm sending my husband to the synagogue with my heart in my mouth. This isn't the first time. It won't be the last.

I'm the last of my British family still here and as much as I love my country I don't know how much longer I want to stay here.

Not sure why I'm posting this. Just feeling despair that this never ends.

It was only recently and on here that I discovered how bad anti semitism is in the UK. I'm from and still live in an area that is not very diverse so I'd never really been aware of it.

Reading how bad some threads here really shocked me. I am constantly saddened by how people will treat each other. I just don't understand it

Oswin · 16/05/2021 19:56

@BellaTheDog

I feel so sorry for you. But British Jews have a responsibility for speaking out about the appalling way Israel is treating the Palestinians. I know some have, but more need to. Otherwise people will assume (rightly or wrongly) that British Jews support the terrible things Israel are doing.
No they fucking dont. Bloody hell. Should muslims have to spend there life constantly saying they dont support every Muslim country who murder gay people? Should they have to do this after every single terrorist attack? No they shouldn't.
NakedBanana · 16/05/2021 19:58

Threads like this make me ashamed to be British. I have reported and will continue to report the idiots who are trolling the OP.

Shame on you.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/05/2021 19:58

It's appalling how much abuse Jews face - in the uk and elsewhere. Palestinian rockets bombard Israeli citizens daily and yet its acceptable to support terrorists groups like Hamas, it's disgusting. We aren't all Guardian readers who believe Israel should be abolished, we're just quieter because the left are so aggressive

No they bloody don’t. What on Earth have British Jews got to do with the Israeli govt? They’re not Israeli!
woodhill · 16/05/2021 19:59

So sorry OP, absolutely awful for you Thanks

chipshopElvis · 16/05/2021 19:59

Hi OP, I'm really sorry to read your post. I'm also in Manchester but wasn't aware of this. I hope you and your community are OK, this should not be happening.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/05/2021 20:01

@BellaTheDog do you feel the same about Muslims having to speak up every time an Islamic terrorists kills people?

IDontLikeMyselfToday · 16/05/2021 20:03

@Elladisenchanted

Flowers *@CommunistLegoBloc* *@NutellaEllaEll* unfortunately we are seeing violence and aggression near us in real life not the Internet. The smashed cars were on the road where relatives live. The aggression and intimidation was in a shop across the road from the school where I work ( 2 minute walk). I just feel sick
Flowers for all Jews in here who are dealing with this kind of shite.

Am horrified anti-Semitism is increasing but am glad it's being talked about . It's a form of racism that seems to get swept under the carpet too often these days.

Chag Sameach

And just to add, I do feel that anti-semitism is on the rise, which is why I left the Labour Party.

MajesticWhine · 16/05/2021 20:07

Some people have been arrested regarding the incident in north london.

IDontLikeMyselfToday · 16/05/2021 20:07

@BellaTheDog

ODFOD

As though every Jew owes an explanation for what the Israeli government is doing?

Nuts to that

Stop shite stirring. Like you are having sleepless nights over Palestinians...more likely you want to take a pop at Jews.

OP - I’m so sorry. I hope they can arrest those responsible and we can send out a message that regardless of politics, religion and opinions, no one should have to live in fear of violence.

Oh jeez, mate, you don't say.

I'm out.

Oh no they don’t. It’s attitudes like yours that are fuelling the anti-Semitic attacks.
BellaTheDog · 16/05/2021 20:08

@IDontLikeMyselfToday Actually, I AM having sleepless nights over Palestinians. As should every person with an ounce of humanity.

Originalyellowbelly · 16/05/2021 20:08

I'm so sorry you are going through this OP, and for your family and community. I always thought democracy and respect was a great trait in this country and I was so sad and disgusted to see what was happening in London today, I didn't realise that this was also happening in other cities. Please take care and stay safe, sorry again.

Rejoiningperson · 16/05/2021 20:09

I am very sorry that you are scared OP.

I went on a march a few years ago to protest about action by Israel to Palestinians. However I left the march half way through when I heard anti-Semitic chants.

avocadotofu · 16/05/2021 20:10

I'm sorry that's so scary and awful. Sending you hugs. Some people are horrible idiots!

MollysMummy2010 · 16/05/2021 20:10

Op I am so sorry that you feel this - please be reassured that most people don’t hold with these sentiments. Most people, like myself, are woefully uninformed of the reasons for the conflict and see things in black and white terms when it is far more nuanced. I hope that you feel safer soon.

KarensChoppyBob · 16/05/2021 20:11
@Britsy the OP isn't responsible for the foreign conflict. She scared about where she is right now. People conflate Judaism with Zionism, which is incorrect.
littleducks · 16/05/2021 20:12

I wasn't aware of this happening, will go and Google search for news results. I live in outer north London, high numbers of Jewish people locally. Some are immediately obviously recognisable from dress codes others more when attending shul.

I do struggle sometimes with the attitudes of some of the communities (there are quite distinct differences between different sects and those attending different synagogues) but these should be challenged in debate and discussion.
