I'm a scared British Jew

Elladisenchanted · 16/05/2021 18:53

As I'm writing this, I've had another whats app messagw asking for prayers for a rabbi in London hospitalised, who has just been beaten up. I'm scared.

I'm getting messages from my synagogue and kids schools about walking in groups for safety. Neighborhood group posting pics of cars where I live smashed up. People driving by waving Palestinian flags and screaming anti semitic abuse and entering shops intimidating people. This is Manchester not London, where it's even worse.
I've been sent screenshots of Facebook posts with comments like rape Jewish women. Rape their mothers. Rape their daughters. Not rape the Israelis. Rape the Jews. British Jews.

I'm preparing for the shavuous festival and at 8.50 pm I'll be turning off my phone for just over two days and be cut off from social media and news. But I'm dreading what I'll see when I go back online on Tuesday night. I'm sending my husband to the synagogue with my heart in my mouth. This isn't the first time. It won't be the last.

I'm the last of my British family still here and as much as I love my country I don't know how much longer I want to stay here.

Not sure why I'm posting this. Just feeling despair that this never ends.

I’m not surprised you’re apprehensive. Dh and I always wonder why everyone’s so nasty to Jewish people.

That’s sad and I hope Jewish people don’t have to endure much more of thats

I think the Israeli governments being restrained considering how many rockets the Palestinians are firing at them. That iron dome defence system is amazing.

But try not share such incredibly insensitive opinions at a time when our children are dying. Because that’s got a name for it

It’s called anti-human.

You think killing 55 children and breaking international law and human rights is restrained?!

Do you lack so much empathy in real life ?

MrsAmaretto · 16/05/2021 23:33

I’m so sorry OP. This anti-Semitic behaviour is disgusting.

Genuine, non goody and non SNP question but are you in England? Is anti-semitism as bad in other UK countries? I live in Scotland but am not aware of it but now I fear that is due to my own naivety and blindness.

NiceGerbil · 16/05/2021 23:33

No problem tealights it's a long thread and an emotional topic.

I would urge anyone reading and feeling very upset/ that it's all one way. To make sure to read and take in the supportive posts as well as the other ones.

I know from experience when stuff feels personal it can be easy to focus on the negative and not take in the other posts.

Tealightsandd · 16/05/2021 23:35

I know what you mean however it's valuable to know what people think, surely? Ok the internet. Some will just post anything to upset people. But most of it is likely how people do think and feel.

Pretending it doesn't exist isn't a good option.

I do know what you mean though.

I get what you mean too - but we wouldn't accept any other racism staying up online. Racist posts are usually deleted.

BellaTheDog

Given that I’m Jewish, grew up in a Jewish suburb of North London, attended a Jewish school and spent time in Israel, I would say I probably know what I’m talking about.

To those criticising me, what are YOUR credentials?

Bella, from a Muslim with Palestinian heritage and long history of trauma,

You are my inspiration. You my friend, are a hero of humanity for using the same standards for justice.

You my friend, are the hope for many of us. Who are hoping for humanity to focus on morals that connect us instead of escalate conflicts that divide us.

We need more of you.

Thank you

So glad I found this thread. I'm a British Jew and I'm scared. The news today of the cars driving up the Finchley Road shouting obscenities really got to me.

I've just finished preparing all the food for Shavuot tomorrow, and I'm lying awake worrying while baby DD sleeps.

I'm really sorry Flowers

I hope the police do something to stop it.

Tealight - I've seen loads of racist posts on here that stand.

The threads when the black mumsnetters board was requested were a shitshow.

Misogyny as well.

But yes I take your point totally.

I don't know the thread you're referring to. Sad that there's any racist posts. I don't feel it's right they should stand. Likewise misogyny.
Tealightsandd · 17/05/2021 00:21

Sorry actually I think I do know the thread. I remember it had lots of deletions. I didn't realise some racist posts were left up.

DeepThinkingGirl · 17/05/2021 00:24

Many mainstream and the most popular Muslim YouTubers and public figures have gone out of their way to condemn those idiot thugs who totally have angered many Muslims right now because they have hijacked our pain to create further corruption and injustice. Soon to follow will be all the imams..

This goes directly against our religion, our community values, our traditions.. and most importantly against our humanity.

There is nothing more triggering than to have thugs use our pain for an agenda that goes directly against ours and that dishonours the loss of life that is going on..

The main aim is to bring a sense of humanity and a joint morality between the Muslims and Jews during this sensitive time.. because we can do it, and we did do it for a century when we lived side by side before politics and colonialism came in the way.

All sides are suffering, no one should use their pain to dismiss someone else. It’s just not right.

goingforaschmy · 17/05/2021 00:33

@EishetChayil please try not to worry - I know it is easy to say and extremely hard to do - but these vile abhorrent thugs make a lot of noise and spew their hatred but they will not be tolerated by decent right-minded people. I hope you have a peaceful sleep with your precious dd and try to enjoy your celebrations this week. Stay strong.

xxyzz · 17/05/2021 03:04

Another Jewish woman posting on here as I can't sleep and have been in tears today with worry over what I'm seeing.

Some of the antisemitism on this thread is a disgrace.

I don't need to tell or justify my views on current events on the Middle East to anyone and this is not the thread to discuss that situation. It is not relevant. There is NO justification for attacks on British Jews, for rape threats made against Jewish women and girls just because of our ethnicity. NONE.

If you want to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there are existing threads elsewhere on this or you can start a new one. This thread is about antisemitism in Britain.

I am horrified not only by the violence but by the impunity that those making those threats seemed to have had. There were about 10 cars, all full of men shouting and jeering, and the police didn't stop them as they went through multiple Jewish neighbourhoods, and have now only arrested 4. Why did they not stop them? Why were grotesquely antisemitic chants and a hideous antisemitic inflatable allowed at the protests in London??

I have a right to be safe. Nothing going on in a part of the world I don't live in and that I have no say on changes that.

So fucking sick of this. This is what centuries of antisemitism and particularly 5 years under Corbyn have done. It has normalised this. I am sick to my stomach of this.

Thank you to those of you who have spoken up here in solidarity and support, and sometimes horror, at what is going on. It is appreciated.

mellongoose · 17/05/2021 04:00

I'm so sorry you're feeling scared OP.

This is not acceptable in my U.K. I will not tolerate violence or threats of violence.

Peace to all.

Musication · 17/05/2021 04:06

I'm sorry op. I'm Jewish but currently live overseas. My family are in North London and I am frightened for them.

goingforaschmy · 17/05/2021 05:27

@xxyzz I could weep and have done today seeing this. I feared these kind of scenes in the UK when the conflict erupted in ME. All I can say to you is that many many people stand with you. We may not be visible or make a lot of noise but trust me we are there. I will never turn a blind eye. I am struggling to sleep, despairing at this. Just know you are not alone.

I agree - imho this thread is for supporting @Elladisenchanted and others feeling worried and for a virtual handhold regardless of faith. Let’s take the dissection of the conflict to another thread.

BellaTheDog · 17/05/2021 08:18

@DeepThinkingGirl Thank you for reaching out. I want you to know that there is a growing number of Jewish people who do not support what Israel are doing.

I do not support Israel. They should not be taking land and citizenship away from Palestinians. Unfortunately this view has led to me being labelled ‘anti-Semitic’ on this thread.

boobot1 · 17/05/2021 08:22

@Elladisenchanted

Flowers *@CommunistLegoBloc* *@NutellaEllaEll* unfortunately we are seeing violence and aggression near us in real life not the Internet. The smashed cars were on the road where relatives live. The aggression and intimidation was in a shop across the road from the school where I work ( 2 minute walk). I just feel sick
This is appalling. The police should crack down on this hard and fast. No one should have to feel like that in their own home. So sorryFlowers

It is the fact that you are bringing it up that is anti Semitic. What has it got to do with harassment of Jewish people living in Britain?
Also, if someone doesn’t agree with your views on Israel, that doesn’t make them a target for abuse. We saw plenty of that under Corbyn. The only positive to take away from that period is that it didn’t wash with most of the British public.
Racial harassment is unacceptable.

BellaTheDog · 17/05/2021 08:49

@Blackberrycream There is no excuse for anti-semitism. Unfortunately, many Jewish people DO support the abhorrent actions of Israel, I wish it wasn’t so, but it is. However, there is a growing number of Jewish people coming out against Israel, which gives us some hope for the future.

Your first sentence was enough.
The rest is a complex debate that belongs elsewhere.
