Irrelevant Things You Think About But Nobody Else Does

The rules of this thread are simple. Post something you have wondered about, but is so irrelevant it never really bothers you to ask or bring up in conversation. You don't need a reply. You can merely make a comment. All in good spirit.

Here are some of mine.

  1. Do Lottery Winners often give huge tips to National Lottery staff? I can imagine this might happen in practice and may be a key perk of the job.
  1. Am I the only person who can clearly taste carrots in Coca Cola? It is a secret vegetable recipe after all, but nobody else I know mentions anything about the flavour. I also detect a tad of beetroot too.

Where do seagulls go at night?
What would animals say if they could speak to humans?
Why are blueberries called blueberries when they aren't blue?

Piglet89 · 16/05/2021 19:35

What happens after I die? I can’t even begin to imagine not just not being conscious (like when I’m asleep) but not even existing any longer.

BlusteryLake · 16/05/2021 19:39

Does my hamster have an inner monologue?

torquewench · 16/05/2021 19:39

What does my cat think when Im hoovering? Does he think im fighting with a noisy beast?

imaginethemdragons · 16/05/2021 19:40

Why don’t they employ someone to clean motorway signage, or all road signage, the barely readable ones need a good soapy wash.

What goes through the mind of:

  1. people who throw McDonald’s food packaging out of a car window on a clean road.

  2. people who leave piles of dog shit ...(especially outside a school gate with kids standing in it and then taking it into school?)

  3. people who stop at the bottom of an escalator with people behind them?

Why isn’t anyone looking at bonkers stuff?
Like laws that beggar belief, car parking charges for nurses and Drs at hospitals.

And why is it not compulsory to build roads out of recycled tyres & crisp packets instead of land filling them, and roof tiles made of solar panels and car bodies made of solar panels to self charge?

stillcrazyafterall · 16/05/2021 19:53

How many people died (or were very ill) before they realised you could eat the delicious stalks of rhubarb but the leaves will kill you?

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 16/05/2021 19:57

Do animal species understand each other or do they have different languages like we do?

And what if my 'blue' is someone else's 'red'?

And who was the first human to sing a song? Did they copy birds?

brogo · 16/05/2021 20:11

Am I the only one that thinks Pimm's and lemonade tastes like curry?

SquirrelFan · 16/05/2021 20:11

@girlmama32... but blueberries are blue...

MargosKaftan · 16/05/2021 20:18

Did Canadian geese fly over to Europe before Europeans had found Canada, and if so, what did they call them back then? (I have rather presumed Canadian geese are named after the country, not the other way round)

Puffinhead · 16/05/2021 20:18

@Ifixfastjets

What if grass doesn't want to be cut? Does it hurt the grass? Do plants feel pain?
There’s an episode of Tales of the Unexpected that explores this notion!
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/05/2021 20:21

I'm pretty sure all of you are my DS.

MyOctopusFeature · 16/05/2021 20:22

@Puffinhead
Ha ha, yes it was on the other day. We settled down to it with a bowl of soup at lunch. That awful scream when the neighbour snipped the roses.

Blueberries are blue!! Please come back and elaborate!
TheRuralLife89 · 16/05/2021 20:24

Ooh so many...
How did words get invented? Like, how did a common consensus happen about what combination of sounds to use to describe a particular thing? I know language evolved gradually, but some things are fairly consistent (like grammar rules), so someone must have come up with them at some point.

Does my dog realise I'm a different species? What does he think is happening when, for example, he watches me tidy up?

When you die, are there a brief few moments when you realise you're dying or do you just suddenly lose consciousness?

At what point, and why, did humans decide that sex should be done privately and that they need to cover up with clothes in public? (I mean I'm glad that this is the case but it's just odd that we're the only species that does this).

Amdone123 · 16/05/2021 20:28

Who decided swear words ?
Will there be a time when the world and everything on it will cease to exist ? ( I have always wondered this since I first heard John Lennon sing Imagine. It fascinates me)
I wonder same as pp about colours, too. Is your 'red the same as mine ?

AdaFuckingShelby · 16/05/2021 20:33

Why do people eat so much stuff with little or no nutritional value and expect to be healthy and slim? I often wonder about that.

petrocellihouse · 16/05/2021 20:46

Totally random but I found myself wondering if The Queen cuts her own toenails? Or if someone comes in to do them for her?

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2021 20:49

Some animals (dog/cat) must have names for eachother in order to understand the basic concept that a certain sound refers to them and them only.

Teddypicker · 16/05/2021 21:13

I often ponder on how much easier life would be if there were 8 days in the week. You could comfortably do stuff 'every other day' and it would be the SAME day every week. Of course the extra day would be tacked on to the weekend. Haven't come up with a name for it yet. Maybe start a thread for ideas?

Ifixfastjets · 16/05/2021 22:51

If aeroplane wings generate lift from their shape, how do things like red arrows fly upside down?

Why are some farts noisy?

Ifixfastjets · 16/05/2021 22:54

Why do we have so many languages?
Surely all early people would have had similar lives? With some kind of shelter ( hut, cave?) Water? Fire?

JustFrustrated · 16/05/2021 22:57

@ifixfastjets

Noisy farts are caused by your bum cheeks vibrating and hitting each other.

The volume of gas released and the tightness of the sphincter muscles (located at the end of the rectum) each play a part in the sound effects. ... The larger the build-up of gas and the tighter the sphincter muscles are, the louder the emission

GallopingGreen · 16/05/2021 23:06

When I was younger we learned all about the ozone layer and acid rain. 30 years later this never seems to feature when we talk about environmental issues. So was there no such thing as acid rain??

Ticklemycarpets · 17/05/2021 07:46

@GallopingGreen I have been wondering this too.
I think the banning of fridges and aerosols that damage the ozone layer solved that issue - hope we look back on the climate crisis with the same memory🤞
No idea about acid rain and why it isn't an issue any more!
