HUGE Elton fan... didnt love the film.

Overall seems like those who love him/his music didn't love the film, and vice versa.

Auntycorruption · 08/05/2021 23:08

We just watched it. I thought he came across as a self indulgent twat, which is a shame as I've always liked his music. Perhaps a victim of circumstances... I don't know. It came across like his success was pure raw talent & not hard work / being a decent person

Stroller15 · 08/05/2021 23:10

I watched it the first time right after Bohemian Rhapsody and thought wtf. Didn't understand what was going on. Heard people talk about it on the radio and it being a proper song and dance musical, and thought we should give it another chance with no expectations. Watched it tonight and really enjoyed it.

RaaRaaeee · 08/05/2021 23:58

I had to switch it off very cringy singing and dancing routines and I was so excited to see it as I love Elton and all his music! Loved bohemian rhapsody film and yesterday too.

peachgreen · 09/05/2021 00:01

It's great. I think Elton is an incredible songwriter and the film is really beautifully done. It doesn't shy away from his mistakes but it also doesn't paint him as a demon. It's well-balanced.

As for the PPs complaining about the "weird song and dance numbers" - it's a musical! The clue is in the genre! Wink

Oh and Taron Egerton is fantastic.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 09/05/2021 00:06

I loved Taron Egertons performance, but why have him sing? It would have been so much better to have Elton singing.

spiderlight · 09/05/2021 00:11

I saw it at the cinema and really enjoyed it. Coming out at the end, the guy ahead of us turned to his wife and said 'well, I didn't think there'd be THAT much music in it!' 🤣

Holothane · 09/05/2021 00:15

Sorry hated it awful film mind I’m not mad on these sort of films anyway.

peachgreen · 09/05/2021 00:16

Oh I totally disagree @WhoEatsPopTarts. I thought he did an amazing job of capturing enough of Elton's vocal mannerisms to be feel right without doing a cheap impression. And having him sing made it feel much more real. The lip syncing is part of what made Bohemian Rhapsody so bad, imo.

@billybagpuss

That should read bohemian rhapsody and yesterday much better though.
I really loved Yesterday. Knew nothing about it so had no expectations & really enjoyed it.
Mandalay246 · 09/05/2021 00:39

I loved it.

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 09/05/2021 00:43

I loved this film so much.

I'm a huge Queen fan and enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody but Rocketman I thought was amazing. Yeah, the song and dance routines are a bit cringe but it's part of the charm. And Richard Madden is smoking hot in this!

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/05/2021 00:46

I loved it - such an interesting way to do a biographical film. Biographies are always full of bullshit anyway, so I thought it was inspired to make Elton himself the unreliable narrator and be completely up front about that. It’s really more about his experience of therapy than it is an accurate life story.

The direction and photography are sublime too. Saturday Night’s Alright was a wonderful sequence.

The only thing I found a bit annoying was Bryce Dallas Howard’s dodgy British accent.

GloomyWaters · 09/05/2021 01:00

LOVED IT!!! Thanks everyone. Didnt want it to end

lollipoprainbow · 09/05/2021 05:46

@TheLeadbetterLife I wasn't keen on Bryce, why was she chosen over an English actress, bizarre !!

Seeyou · 09/05/2021 06:29

I loved it. So interesting to see that this is the way Elton John wanted to portray his story . And the correlation between events in his life and matching songs was a revelation. Before I watched it , I had no idea it was going to be a musical , so quite pleasantly surprised.
