Wow!

Does anyone know how many weeks gestation she gave birth, doubt she'd have got to 38. I wish her well.

KeflavikAirport · 05/05/2021 16:25

Well yes it’s a very rare event. There are cases of natural octuplets though. She would have to have some kind of hyper fertility syndrome or something I suppose

Chatanooga1 · 05/05/2021 16:26

So far all I’ve read is that she was having seven that were naturally conceived and then they discovered later there were actually nine.

It I’ll be interesting to see if there was artificial intervention at some point.

notalwaysalondoner · 05/05/2021 16:27

I'm just amazed that they all seem to have been carried a relatively long time (based on the pictures, they didn't look absolutely tiny) and all seem to still be doing OK.

Some people are very ignorant - just because someone is a black Muslim woman from Mali, doesn't mean she can't be wealthy. There are wealthy people in every country who have the means to access IVF.

HotPenguin · 05/05/2021 16:33

There was a case either here or in the US, I forget, where a woman conceived 7 babies by taking fertility drugs. Usually a "reduction" would be carried out, I.e. they terminate most of the babies to give two the best chance of survival, but in that case the woman refused the reduction.

I think it's likely that in this case the woman took fertility drugs to stimulate production of eggs, I doubt she would have had 9 eggs implanted via IVF, or that it happened naturally.

CrumpetsForAll · 05/05/2021 16:33

Could be surrogacy if she’s not wealthy

PompomDahlia · 05/05/2021 16:34

Some patronising responses. I’ve been to Mali and there is a large middle class consisting of professionals with very nice homes - not all mud huts, so she may well have had IVF. I hope the babies can stay healthy and that she can get lots of support. One of the things I loved most about Mali was how hospitable people were and how much of an emphasis there is on extended family, so hopefully she will have lots of help from family.

SunbathingDragon · 05/05/2021 16:35

I hope the mother and all the babies are healthy and well.

KeflavikAirport · 05/05/2021 16:36

Of course there is a Middle class in Mali but they would not be left carrying nine babies.

Soubriquet · 05/05/2021 16:41

I can’t see it being IVF but I can see fertility drugs being the cause

That’s very true but no ivf clinic could ethically transfer nine embryos.
eurochick · 05/05/2021 16:43

Poor woman!

I would suspect clomid was used without monitoring alongside.

LostInTime · 05/05/2021 16:54

50% of Mali's population is under 15. I doubt she had IVF. No idea about fertility assistance.

LostInTime · 05/05/2021 16:54

It's also a little odd that Morocco's Health Minister is saying he has no record of this happening.

Lightswitchesoffatnight · 05/05/2021 16:55

@TeaAddict235

Why don't we celebrate the wonder of the female body rather than slinging out disgust and dismay?

Think about how small and vulnerable and how precious each one of those babies are. Think about how she is trying to love and comfort each one each day and night. Think about her concerns about the virus. Think about her husband and the fear he my have had throughout the pregnancy.

Celebrate don't 'player' hate

How’s it going up there on the moral high ground?

They look tiny to me! And very pink with translucent skin. I'd be even more amazed if she did get to 38 weeks!

If she has the means to access IVF, you would expect it to be ethical and responsible IVF, which it clearly could not have been in this case.

30 weeks apparently.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/05/2021 17:03

Well, that's not ethical.
If it turns out its natural, then good luck.

Well hospitals in Mali weren't equipped to adequately care for her carrying 7-9 babies. I really would have assumed this was a natural occurrence or else it wreaks of absolute carelessness.
NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 05/05/2021 17:04

I'd love to know what gestation they were delivered at, can't imagine getting past 30 weeks with 9 babies, I don't think it says in the article.
I'm glad mother and babies are doing well.

KeflavikAirport · 05/05/2021 17:13

There's one private clinic in Mali that does IVF. According to the Mali health ministry, it is financially out of reach for most of the country. I agree that unsupervised clomid use is more likely.

poppycat10 · 05/05/2021 17:25

Wasn't this in Mali? Highly unlikely to have been IVF!

poppycat10 · 05/05/2021 17:26

Sorry should have RTFT.

poppycat10 · 05/05/2021 17:27

It's not patronising at all - the country is one of the poorest in the world and is racked by Islamist violence to the point that some British troops have recently gone there as part of a NATO peace keeping exercise. The French have been trying to keep the peace there for years.
