Condiments

What condiments do you ALWAYS have in
your cupboard/fridge and would feel slightly panicked not having them available?

My essentials are (in no specific order):

  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Tomato Ketchup
  • HP sauce
  • Franks Red Hot Sauce
  • Siracha
  • Soy Sauce/Tamari
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Mushroom Ketchup
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Wholegrain Mustard
  • Kimchi

Not sure they qualify as condiments but I always have Fish Sauce, Gochujang, Chinese cooking wine and various vinegars (balsamic/red/white wine/cider) plus a standard veg oil and some nice Olive/Rapeseed for dressings.

Is there any fabulous condiment I'm missing that's a game changer?

Not if you don't like them
mamaduckbone · 26/04/2021 21:01

Ketchup
Brown sauce
Mayo
Salad cream
English, Dijon and whole grain mustard
Soy sauce
Worcestershire sauce
Fish sauce
Sweet chilli sauce
Reds hot sauce
Barbecue sauce (usually several)
Tartare
Horseradish
Balsamic, malt and cider vinegar
Olive oil, vegetable oil, sesame oil
Piccante pizza oil
Miso paste
Hoisin and oyster sauce
Tahini
...we have a very full condiment cupboard.

mamaduckbone · 26/04/2021 21:02

I feel that my life is missing mushroom ketchup though.

CinnamonStar · 26/04/2021 21:03

I always have

Mayonnaise
HP sauce
English mustard
Apple sauce
Horseradish
Some sort of pickle or chutney
Wine or cider vinegar

I always have a spare of those waiting in the cupboard so we never run out.

There is plenty of other stuff in the cupboard (barbecue sauce, soy sauce, Henderson's relish, Nando's garlic sauce) but that won't necessarily be replaced when it runs out.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 26/04/2021 21:15

Sriracha Mayo, Tabasco and sweet baby rays sauce. Except for salt, black pepper and chilli flakes they’re all I like on my food

I do cook with lots of other stuff - lazy garlic, chilli, ginger, soy sauce, tamarind paste, lots of different herbs

Dp has to have beetroot ketchup, garlic Mayo, tzatziki/mint yoghurt, mint sauce, branston, HP and normal ketchup. He often has 3 or 4 of them on one meal

DeRigueurMortis · 26/04/2021 21:16

Pomegranate molasses

That sounds interesting - how do you use that @MirandaMarple?

@mamaduckbone

I feel that my life is missing mushroom ketchup though.

It is - I love the stuff. It's great in lots of dishes for an umami kick. Especially nice on cheese on toast.

DH is Dutch and they have some amazing condiments over there that we always stock up on when we visit, especially:

Curry ketchup - tastes like ketchup with curry powder in

Andalusian sauce - tastes like ketchup mixed with Mayo and mustard

Ravigote sauce - similar to salad cream

AbstractHeart · 26/04/2021 21:26

Where can you buy mushroom ketchup?

EventuallyDistracted · 26/04/2021 21:28

We bought pomegranate molasses a couple of weeks ago, thumbs down from the whole family. A bit like neat Ribena.

LudoBear · 26/04/2021 21:38

I haven't even heard of half these things! Rarely use condiments. Currently got mayonnaise and salad cream in but that's all. Neither have been used for a while though

DeRigueurMortis · 26/04/2021 21:40

@AbstractHeart

Where can you buy mushroom ketchup?

I last bought it at Waitrose Blush but you can get it from Amazon.

Don't be fooled by the name - it's not a thick sauce like tomato ketchup.

It's more like a vegetarian/vegan version of Worcestershire sauce.

5 of us in this house. None like Mayo. At all. Ketchup I could give a miss. (Unless it's a sausage butty or a cheeseburger). I think if we ran out though it wouldn't cause much more of a reaction than a shrug.
OhRene · 26/04/2021 21:56

Does anyone know what brand or type of chilli sauce a lot of kebab shops use? Obviously they could all be different but there must be one or two that are a Booker's biggest sellers.

I tried Econa (?) and a few more but none have been anywhere similar. I think I'm gonna have to stake out the van when the guys from the takeaway are unloading their wholesalers shopping.

WalkingMeAway · 26/04/2021 22:05

Ketchup
Mayo
Salad Cream
English mustard
Dijon mustard
Garlic Mayo
Sweet chilli sauce
Seafood sauce
Burger sauce

Kangaroo1 · 26/04/2021 22:18

Mayo, soy sauce, ketjap mannis, olive oil, balsamic vinegar. And DH has his hot sauces and Coleman's mustard

Blueeyedgirl21 · 26/04/2021 22:21

@OhRene the ones round here use a brand called Crucials. It’s on Amazon and in b&m usually.

Tambora · 26/04/2021 22:25

We have:

Mint sauce
Cranberry sauce
Tartare sauce
Horseradish
English mustard
Dijon mustard
Wholegrain mustard
Apple sauce
Red pesto
Nando's x3 - lemon & herb, mango & lime, hot
Branston pickle
Bandido piri-piri sauce
Hellmans mayo
Heinz salad cream
Heinz garlic mayo
Doritos salsa
Caramelised onion & garlic chutney
Tomato puree
Soy sauce
Tabasco sauce
Worcester sauce
HP sauce
Tomato ketchup
Barbecue sauce
Malt vinegar
Balsamic vinegar
Olive oil with lemon

I once had some lovely truffle-flavoured olive oil spray (a little went a long way) but it eventually ran out and I can't remember where I bought it.

Tambora · 26/04/2021 22:27

Found another one - mango chutney.

3Britnee · 26/04/2021 22:28
