Seriously good prosecco

Autosavepassword · 23/04/2021 13:42

Can anyone point me towards a very, very good bottle of prosecco- there is no budget. I don't drink so I would have absolutely no idea if the stuff I would potentially be buying is only fit for cleaning the toilet.

Its needed for a gift for someone who I know drinks the stuff and has gone above and beyond to help me out.

Thanks.

@Mammymar

Aldi do a lovely prosecco and the Graham Norton one is nice too. If your friend likes prosecco, go for that and not champagne. I've also found the cheaper bottles are nicer so wouldn't waste money on an expensive bottle. Is there any way you can find out what prosecco they already like?
I’m not sure about this advice. When you’re buying someone a gift to say thank you a cheap bottle of Prosecco doesn’t give a great message, no matter how nice it is.

Get something nice. Like this. And ps this also tastes nice.

@Plump82 yes the Aldi Organic one is very lovely.

Freshprincess · 23/04/2021 15:52

Aldi do a lovely one, but if it’s a special gift then I’d go for champagne it’s much nicer.

@BigusBumus

The problem with Prosecco is that it suddenly became very popular 10 years ago and the price and therefore the quality has become really low.

Its popularity forced many of the old Cava houses to close. Only the really decent ones remained and upped their game and now the quality of Cava available quite surpasses the bog standard Proseccos out there.

There is a fabulous Cava called Anna in a white bottle that is sold in Waitrose for about £13 I think which is much more like champagne than any of the Alka Seltzer-like Proseccos about.

I’m very happy to hear Cava is having a resurgence. Sooooo much nicer than Prosecco

Champagne or Hattingley Valley English sparkling. Even expensive Prosecco is dull

IWouldntBother · 23/04/2021 16:00

I'd go for a bottle of Nyetimber English sparkling wine instead, much nicer

DonLewis · 23/04/2021 16:01

M absolute favourite fizz is Chapel down sparkling wine. English, From waitrose about £27. I'd be thrilled to receive a bottle of that!

Janaih · 23/04/2021 16:05

I love how everyone knows better than OP what her friend would like Grin
Not everyone who drinks prosecco does so because they are too poor and unrefined to drink English sparkling wine/ champagne.

NeedATan · 23/04/2021 16:07

@SmidgenofaPigeon

A brilliant U.K. ‘champagne’ is Nytimber. It’s lovely.
Agreed. And I'd much rather drink champagne than prosecco.

@HowToBringABlushToTheSnow
If you like Whispering Angel try Miraval Rose. It's gorgeous. Even nicer.
Brad and Angelina own the winery.

Crayfishforyou · 23/04/2021 16:11

I choose Cava over Prosecco every time.
Except when I’m in Italy, Prosecco there is lovely

balzamico · 23/04/2021 16:15

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow
Whispering Angel is the best though, absolutely gorgeous prosecco
Sorry that's rose. I'll get my coat

I was just about to try and buy it - I LOVE Whispering Angel 🤣

rachelgreensroom · 23/04/2021 16:20

Eek maybe not the most popular opinion but I love Prosecco and don't really enjoy champagne! If I'm buying Prosecco as a gift I go with M&S - they've a few nice ones.

FizzyPink · 23/04/2021 16:23

If you have a Co-op near you their champagne is amazing and very reasonable. It’s called Les Pionnieres and about £20 I think

oohyoudevilyou · 23/04/2021 16:25

Another vote for the Aldi organic one. We stock up when they have it in as it flies off the shelf pretty quickly.

LadyEloise · 23/04/2021 17:20

Sainsburys Valda Marco Ora Prosecco was voted the best of the supermarket/ widely available proseccos on a tv programme around Christmas time. I can't remember what programme but put a note of the prosecco into my phone.

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Sainsbury’s Cognieliano (purple label, taste the difference) is my absolute favourite (and I’ve drank a lot of the stuff)

Lidls had a beautiful pear-like crisp one with a green label last year that was superb, but when I bought it at the beginning of this year it was nowhere near as good. Different batch I guess. The Sainsbury’s one above is consistent.

Agree with the sains one!
ladsholiday · 23/04/2021 18:04

@LiveatCityHall

I would always go with champagne (Bollinger is the best imho) but if they don't drink champagne then get as expensive a bottle of prosecco as you can but make sure its a D'Oc and not a Spumante. D'Oc is the better tasting.
Bolinger is absolutely rank IMO.

If the person drinks Prosecco, champagne may not be to their taste

WhatHaveIFound · 23/04/2021 18:06

@Plump82

My sister gave me a bottle of Aldi Organic Prosecco and it's delicious and very drinkable!!
I came on here to reccomend the same thing. We bought loads of this for DD's 18th birthday and everyone loved it.
Notreallyhappy · 23/04/2021 18:10

Waitrose

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 23/04/2021 18:12

For the whispering angel fans - Aldi’s fleurs de prairie côtes de Provence is delicious.

VioletViola · 23/04/2021 18:12

If your friend enjoys Prosecco, get her Prosecco! For some people Champagne or Cava might be preferable, but you know your friend.

Frexinet is lovely, around £12 and the bottle looks nice for a gift.

If you wanted a little extra to put alongside it, Chambord (raspberry liqueur) is lovely in Prosecco.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 23/04/2021 18:15

If you can find out your friend’s preferred brand and it’s less expensive than you planned you could always get a half case of six bottles.

Cavagirl · 23/04/2021 18:16

As my user name would suggest, I am heavily biased...fully agree with the comments of PP re. cava.

Do they love prosecco or any sparkling wine? Waitrose have some great offers for English sparkling wine at the moment, if you want something different.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/04/2021 18:19

Another vote for English sparkling wine, it’s tastier than Prosecco and a bit classier but not so much that you come across as a snob or trying to improve her tastes

However nice Aldi and Lidl Prosecco is it doesn’t scream “I put a lot of thought in to this gift and splashed out for you”
