Teen taking Yasmine pill

AnnaFiveTowns · 07/04/2021 12:19

My DD is 15 and has mild acne and suffers from heavy, painful periods. She also has a boyfriend and so needs it for contraceptive purposes. She has just been prescribed Yasmin. Does anyone else have any experience of this pill? Either their teens or themselves taking it? I have been doing some research and there is quite a lot of negative press about it so I'm concerned. She tried a different pill previously but had continuous spotting so switched to this one.

I forgot to say that she's had some anxiety/ depression in the past. But I'm also concerned about the blood clot risk.

My sister was on it for years without issue if that reassured you? Helped her acne loads!

LilaButterfly · 07/04/2021 12:30

I was on it for 10 years as a teenager/young adult. Never had any issues.

Thanks. That's reassuring. How old were they when they started it?

I've been taking it for 7 years but I'm 40 so they want me to come off it.Has no problems at all with it.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 07/04/2021 12:43

I took it for years for severe acne - worked a treat. I was about 18 when I started it (having been on Dianette before) and took it until i was in my mid twenties

BrownEyedGirl80 · 07/04/2021 12:43

Had

Plump82 · 07/04/2021 12:43

I was on it for years and loved it. My skin was crystal-clear and it just really suited me. Lots of doctors dont prescribe it because apparently its one of the more expensive one to be on. My doctor won't prescribe me it anymore as im too old 🥴

Goatsgetmygoat · 07/04/2021 12:59

Yep Jasmine and Dianette for mild acne - works really well. Did find it suppressed my sex drive though

AnnaMagnani · 07/04/2021 13:04

I had it donkeys years ago, don't recall it did anything for my acne but it was just another pill.

Being on the pill in general increases the rise of blood clots. But it is still v rare. Being pregnant increases the risk too + you have a baby to take home with you!

ColourfulElmerElephant · 07/04/2021 13:07

I’ve taken it on and off for 20 years (when it first came out) and prefer it over anything else. Keeps my skin nice (slightly dry at times) and helps my endometriosis manageable. Never had any negative side effects.

PatrickBatemann · 07/04/2021 13:09

It also cleared my skin up amazingly

DahliaRoses · 07/04/2021 13:10

Please please remove your daughter off of Yasmin. I had depression before going on yasmin and it made it so much worse, I felt suicidal couldn’t sleep. It did help with acne and periods and contraception but I felt like a monster on it and had no clarity at all.

Once I came off of it, I felt like a different person and have been on the (non hormonal coil) since. Yasmin has been banned in countries due to its risk with those with depression but unfortunately isn’t banned in the UK.

I took it without problem for years but eventually started getting crippling headaches in my pill free weeks so had to stop.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 07/04/2021 13:25

I've been on Yasmin for around 15 years. Mainly because of acne as well as contraception. It's extremely expensive compared to other pills so very hard to get drs to prescribe. Just keep an eye on side effects as per any pill.

AnnaFiveTowns · 07/04/2021 13:27

Thanks everyone, it helps to have some real life experience.

Dahlia, this is one worry that I do have. I think that I will just have to monitor that side of things very carefully. I have told her that it can have this effect and to reflect on her mood daily. The problem is, I suppose, that if you are already prone to depression it's sometimes hard to know whether it's related to the pill or not. I am very concerned about this so will be watching like a hawk. The thing is that she gets really down when her skin flares up so it may be that if this improves her skin then it might actually lift her mood. Anyway it's good to have feedback from all this first hand experience. Thanks

I've been in various pills over the years and never had any side effects at all, but obviously everyone's different. Been on both Yasmin and Dianette in the past, no problems, and both cleared up my skin amazingly well.

Eyevorbig0ne · 07/04/2021 13:32

I used this in my 20s and it really helped the acne.
I tried dianette first but it made my emotions haywire. Yasmin also did this but not quite so much. I did gain weight on it though.

Hoppinggreen · 07/04/2021 13:34

It made my DD quite poorly and badly affected her mood. She’s on Lucette now but it’s not doing much for either painful periods or acne
Plenty of teens are on Yasmin and are fine though

AnnaFiveTowns · 07/04/2021 13:41

My understanding was that Lucette and Yasmin contain the same active ingredients, just different brand names - and I think there is a soy product in Lucette. It seems odd that they would switch her from Yasmin to Lucette. Hopefully it will be better for her though. It's such a worry when they are so young. I hate that she has to take any kind of drugs, especially as she is fragile anyway.

Can anyone remember how long it is before it has a positive effect on the skin? I've read that it can take months.

It’s been quite quite for me. Certainly within a cycle. I hope it helps your daughter. There are lots of other forms of contraception for her if it doesn’t though.

Sorry, just checked DD is actually on Cerelle now not Lucette
murbblurb · 07/04/2021 18:16

Everyone's body chemistry is different so the experience of others is of little value. She should watch for any side effects and go back to the doctor if not happy. There are plenty of other pills and it may take a few tries.

Also remind her that she doesn't know where he's been so needs to use condoms too.

mindutopia · 07/04/2021 18:54

I took Yasmin for years (probably at least 10-15 years). The only reason I've not gone back on it now (after 2 dc) is because I'm 40s and it's not as recommended as others as you get older. I loved it. Worked really well for me and I had no side effects while taking it and it was easy to come off (no side effects or issues with my cycle then either).
