Teen taking Yasmine pill

My DD is 15 and has mild acne and suffers from heavy, painful periods. She also has a boyfriend and so needs it for contraceptive purposes. She has just been prescribed Yasmin. Does anyone else have any experience of this pill? Either their teens or themselves taking it? I have been doing some research and there is quite a lot of negative press about it so I'm concerned. She tried a different pill previously but had continuous spotting so switched to this one.

Severe depression risk. Please don't do it.
Also, 15 is so young to be dealing with an adult sexual relationship so if she is already prone to anxiety/depression could you try to push her away from this? My mother died when I was young and I fell far too young into this kind of relationship, too young to deal with the fall out. I wish my mother had been around to guide me away :( and tell me to do something else with my time instead. Easier said than done I know, but just saying.

I think my sister was quite young , maybe 13? She was on it for acne and awful periods rather than contraception and it helped with both.i think she stopped it in her late 20’s. No issues with depression.

ForTheLoveOfWine · 07/04/2021 22:27

I was on yasmin for bad skin and now Lucette which I was told is pretty much the same
Period pains worse but skin still good - I get awful skin if I come off it

No side affects I’m aware z

I think when googling these things most people only write about the negatives. Obviously there are things to look out for but I’m sure you could find negatives about all the contraceptive pills out there.

ForTheLoveOfWine · 07/04/2021 22:28

I’m aware of* sorry posted to soon

ForTheLoveOfWine · 07/04/2021 22:29

Should add yasmin really helped with painful periods
Lucette is not as good with that but I am better at managing the pain now too hth

clartychops · 07/04/2021 22:39

I went on Dianette at 21 after a horrific experience on the injection (6+ months bleeding, terrible skin) and got moved to Yasmin maybe 15 years ago. Still on it now at 42. There are generic/cheaper versions now (my current pack is Dretine?) so I don't think it's as expensive for GPs as it was. All good here.

I agree, it's not ideal but she's not that far off 16; it's her first proper boyfriend and she's his first girlfriend; they are really close and sweet to each other and I can think of far worse scenarios to be dealing with in terms of first sexual experiences. I'm not encouraging it in any way but I think it will inevitably happen in the near future, although she hasnt actually said that this is the case.

I've taken it for years OP, am 33 now and been on it since my twenties. I did diabetes before (which cleared my skin entirely).

I've got on with yasmin fine generally, although it exacerbates the number of migraines I have. It prevents true acne for me but I still get hormonal spots and don't have perfect skin on it. Much more manageable though it is worth noting that whenever I've come off it the acne simply returns so it isn't a permanent measure and that can be disheartening. Like your DD I feel so low when my skin is bad that I accept the measured risk and treat the side effects instead.

Worth also remembering that the pill is certainly not 100% reliable against pregnancy even with perfect use eg (from nhs info). So ideally she would be using condoms regardless.

Perfect use: more than 99% effective.1 in every 100 women will become pregnant in a year when using the combined pill correctly.

Typical use: around 91% effective. Around 9 in 100 women using the combined pill will get pregnant in a year

MouseholeCat · 07/04/2021 23:38

I was on it for quite a few years, starting in my teens. It was the best contraceptive pill I've ever been on, with the fewest side effects and it really helped my severe acne. I got taken off it as there was a period of time where the NHS stopped prescribing it.

I tried other brands of pills all of which exacerbated my anxiety and depression and gave me hormonal migraines. Yasmine didn't do any of that for some reason.

PattyPan · 07/04/2021 23:41

I took it for several years starting when I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 (9 years ago) and had no issues at all. I have had problems with a lot of pill brands but not that one.

PattyPan · 07/04/2021 23:43

I had recently recovered from depression and anorexia before going on Yasmin and didn't find it affected my mental health at all. Unlike Cilest which made me cry all. the. time!

Desmondo2021 · 08/04/2021 01:08

I found yasmin nearly 100% effective for my quite severe acne and was on it for around 15 years. I have come off it now as I'm fairly certain it caused the terrible forehead chloasma I developed in my 30s, which has faded to nearly invisible in the year I have been off it.

endoflevelbaddy · 08/04/2021 01:34

I've been on it for getting on 20 years and with a few breaks for pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue (although pp chloasma comment had me thinking as that's something I suffer with and put down to ageing / sun damage).
I'm nearly 40 now so GP generally trying to push coil. From a blood clotting risk POV - I have a heart condition that increases my risk of blood clots and my cardiologist was happy for me to continue with Yasmin, if that offers any reassurance.

alpenguin · 08/04/2021 02:53

It was the only pill I co ups take that didn’t make me irrationally angry at the time. It also helped with spots, periods were light and lasted 3 days and I didn’t gain any weight.

I did get pregnant taking it but I was older and had just experienced an extremely stressful life event which may have contributed to it not working (according to my GP)

AnnaFiveTowns · 08/04/2021 09:45

This is all really useful, thanks.

I’ve been on Yasmin for years and highly rate it! I’ve literally just posted a thread about my daughters PMT & I’m requesting she’s commented on it ASAP. My two friends take it too and they think it’s wonderful for PMT.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/05/2021 07:12

I was on it for years. Did wonders for my skin. No issues whatsoever. All medicines have side effects and risks, even paracetamol. It’s whether the benefit is worth it - acne can severely affect mental health in itself. My dd aged 18 ended up going on roaccutane for acne (not of the pills helped) and it was absolutely amazing, she said it was the best thing ever (she went on it at 16). If we had listened to all the scare stories she wouldn’t have clear skin now and would probably be suicidal due to the horrific acne she had.
