Possible whisper of a line on LFT - are they like pregnancy tests?

Possible faintest whisper of a line on 1 child's LFT. Not sure if it's just dried that way. Are they like pregnancy tests and it could be an early positive, or is this negative? After 40 mins.

I would say that's negative.

Wnikat · 05/04/2021 22:13

I can’t see a line but maybe do another one to be sure?

TheFallenMadonna · 05/04/2021 22:13

You have to read at 30 minutes.

We're (NHS) told to read the result at 30mins then discard, regardless of what comes up after that. I'd say it's negative as I can't see a line but do another to be on the safe side if you're not sure.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 05/04/2021 22:13

I see it. Time to book a PCR test?

Strangekindofwoman · 05/04/2021 22:14

Even the very faintest line counts as positive. Get a PCR test.

tisonlymeagain · 05/04/2021 22:15

I wondered that too OP. We had the faintest line and I said, if I was checking for pregnancy, using my line eyes I'd say it was positive!

Strangekindofwoman · 05/04/2021 22:16

I can see a very faint line and it would be counted as positive in a test centre.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 05/04/2021 22:23

Mine was positive with a faint line after 30 minutes (I had a lab test after)

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 05/04/2021 22:25

Do another. You’re told to read at 30 mins and then discard for a reason.

AvaCallanach · 05/04/2021 22:30

Doing another, have set alarm to read after 30 mins....

SuperintendentHastings · 05/04/2021 22:34

Hope it's negative OP.

AvaCallanach · 05/04/2021 22:54

Update: picture of new very thoroughly scraped test at exactly 30 min. It's negative isn't it?

Both look negative to me.

SuperintendentHastings · 05/04/2021 23:01

Yes that's negative.

TechGinny · 05/04/2021 23:05

I would repeat that tomorrow... I can see the faintest smudge where a positive line would be.

Did the child eat or drink before the test?

AvaCallanach · 05/04/2021 23:08

@TechGinny
I think it may be the shadow. Here's another taken at the same time.

It's fine op, no line

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 05/04/2021 23:19

I've worked at a testing centre - would read it as negative.

Get a pcr if any symptoms - not just the big 3 but gastric or headaches too

AvaCallanach · 05/04/2021 23:28

Thanks all. Particularly anxious as visiting Granny for the first time in a year tomorrow. She has had vacc though and we will be outside and distancing.

AvaCallanach · 13/04/2021 09:07

UPDATE:
We went to see Granny, social distanced walk.

We are on the ONS survey and the whole family had their monthly test on Saturday, 5 days later. This child tested positive on PCR.

allyouneedis · 13/04/2021 12:29

That’s quite worrying then, these tests have been provided to my DS to do twice weekly after the Easter break. Seems pretty pointless if they are so inaccurate. Hope your child is ok.

PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 13/04/2021 13:28

Ah, ok, following on from your update I couldn't see either LFT as positive and would have assumed negative if it had been me.
Shock
I hope DC and you/your family/Granny are all ok.

Pidgythe2nd · 13/04/2021 13:36

I can see a faint line in the first picture.
There must have been something there for you to post.
I was told false positive is still a positive, so I’m not surprised the PCR came back positive.
I don’t see this as ‘worrying’ or that LFT are ‘pointless’. It did work but they’re not as sensitive.

AvaCallanach · 13/04/2021 16:27

Pidgy
The thing that is mildly concerning is that the tiny shadow of a line appeared when the original test was dry - outside the 30 min reading window. When I redid the test with the relevant child and read it strictly at 30 min as per instructions, it was a clear negative.

Only we now know he was probably very early in a covid infection.
