Wrong Casting?

As I read The Shipping News for the 250th time, I'm reminded again that Gerard Depardieu (questionable person, brilliant actor) should definitely have been cast as Quoyle.

The rest of the cast - Julianne Moore and Judi Dench were perfect. Kevin Spacey was all wrong ('a great, damp loaf of a body')

Which other film roles have been so completely miscast as this brilliant example Grin

pineapple, yes it soured their relationship. The film would have been so much better had DB cast EMcG but I think there was pressure from the money people to go with LM, and would play better in the US.

queenrollo · 05/04/2021 14:50

Nicole Kidman as Satine in Moulin Rouge. I can't explain why but it has just never felt like a good casting decision to me. I love everything else about the film but find her prescence and performance utterly irritating.

DorisLessingsCat · 05/04/2021 14:53

@avamiah

Just thought of another ridiculous casting . Does anybody remember the film RED 2 with Bruce Willis ? It was a great film then Catherine Zeta Jones comes in as a Russian CIA Agent( acting all sexy etc ) and the whole film loses its credibility . Anyone remember it?
Lol at the RED films having credibility GrinThey were very enjoyable nonsense.

Oh and whoever mentioned Grease - Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) played the Danny role on stage. He was miffed to lose it to Travolta in the film version and then they rubbed salt in the wound by giving the Danny character the Greased Lighting (car workshop scene) song when it originally belonged to Kenickie.
Poor old Jeff....

I used to think I was being a bit unfair to the child actors in HP. They were only 11/12 when they started and aren’t all child actors pretty dreadful?

Then I watched movies like the live action Jungle Book, the Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Jojo Rabbit where the kids were INCREDIBLE. Just how does a huge franchise like HP end up with a main cast that are only marginally more talented than the actor in my work’s health and safety video on Manual Handling?

It also annoys me that the main three kids were acting against talented actors like Rickman and Maggie Smith and yet across 8 films they don’t seem to have shared a single tip or technique to help them appear slightly less wooden.

@MrsEricBana

Andi McDowell in Four Weddings & a Funeral 😫
Just about to say that. So bad it ruined the film :(
8misskitty8 · 05/04/2021 15:01

@queenrollo, Jeff also had to slouch when in a scene with travolta as he was taller than him.

hitsvilleuk · 05/04/2021 15:10

In the otherwise brilliant 3 Billboards the Australian actor who played Willoughby's wife was appalling and sort of cast a downer over that bit of the film.

Real shame as it was great overall

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2021 15:11

I was watching Grease yesterday and found myself watching Kenicke more than anyone else. I don’t think I realised how good he was before, and so cool.

Lostinacloud · 05/04/2021 15:13

The one I get most irrationally irritated by is the casting in the film ‘Wimbledon’
Much like in Titanic, I always think Paul Bettany looks more like Kirsten Dunst’s dad than her boyfriend.

MaryGubbins · 05/04/2021 15:14

Ruth Wilson was Jane eyre in the bbc mini series in about 2006. No offence to ruth but I’d say she was just the right side of plain.

On the other hand Kiera knightly as Elizabeth bennet. Dreadful. He’d have been better off with miss bingley.

UnderHisAye · 05/04/2021 15:15

Nicolas Cage in Captain Corelli's Mandolin was an absolute travesty.

His Italian accent was about as good as Joey Tribbiani's.

zzizzer · 05/04/2021 15:22

Yy to child actors not needing to be terrible - the Narnia films got it exactly right too and felt like a breath of fresh air in comparison.

God knows what was going on with the Harry Potter casting, but given that Daniel Radcliffe was only there as his dad was an agent in the business, you've got to assume that it wasn't all about talent.

Scotmum83 · 05/04/2021 15:31

Eric Bana in the time travellers wife, I always imagined John Cusack would play Henry. Still enjoyed it though

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 05/04/2021 15:32

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher
Kerala Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett - just no no no.

IntermittentParps · 05/04/2021 15:33

Much as I love James Mcavoy in anything he does, I felt he was miscast as Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials Tv series.

When I read the books I always imagined Paul Bettany as Asriel.
'a tall man with powerful shoulders, a fierce dark face, and eyes that seem to flash and glitter with savage laughter…All his movements were large and perfectly balanced, like those of a wild animal, and when he appeared in a room like this, he seemed a wild animal held in a cage too small for it'.

It's obvious!

Artus · 05/04/2021 15:34

Sharon Small , whilst a great actor, is nothing like the Barbara Havers of the Inspector Linley books. Far too attractive, even in a bad anorak.

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/04/2021 15:35

Ruth Wilson plain! Shock I think she is very striking.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 05/04/2021 15:36

This is the second thread I've seen quite recently in which Kate Winslet is said to be too old for Leo in Titanic and it makes me feel Shock. She was 21 at the time and I think they're amazing together - I just can't imagine anyone else in either role. She filmed Sense and Sensibility just before it I think and she comes across very young in that so if she does come across as older in Titanic it's not her as such.

I think Alan Rickman is way too old for his role in S & S, especially with her playing opposite. He and Hugh Grant should have swapped imo. Also, staying with Austen, Toni Collette (who I love) was horribly miscast in the Paltrow version of Emma. Without being offensive, she's not got the girly prettiness Harriet is said to have and why did they make her put weight on for it??

flyingtartar · 05/04/2021 15:40

I always imagined John Cusack would play Henry. Still enjoyed it though

I wanted JC to be Nick in Great Gatsby. I accept he was too old when they finally did the remake, but Toby Maguire was all wrong.

Oneeyeopen · 05/04/2021 15:41

Renee Zellwegger and Catherine zeta Jones in Chicago. Having seen it in the West End with Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper the film was such a let down.
Les Miserables too, dreadful casting.

PlumKetchup · 05/04/2021 15:42

@OrangeBananaFish

All this talk about HP and EW in BatB I'm really surprised no-one has thought of Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black. Maybe that's just me. Surely not?

I thought young Lily Potter looked like Ginny when we recently re-watched the films.

I agree re Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black. Strangely, in the original (superior) TV version of TWiB, his character was played by the actor who plays his father in Harry Potter (Adrian Rawlins?) He was much more convincing.
CourageCamille · 05/04/2021 15:44

Everybody in The Dark is Rising film- bad enough they made the Stanton family Americans but Ian McShane as Merriman Lyon who should have been a Christopher Lee/Ian Richardson type was an insult.

Mother87 · 05/04/2021 15:45

Was never sure about Clint Eastwood in Bridges of Madison County... Or Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli...
