Wrong Casting?

As I read The Shipping News for the 250th time, I'm reminded again that Gerard Depardieu (questionable person, brilliant actor) should definitely have been cast as Quoyle.

The rest of the cast - Julianne Moore and Judi Dench were perfect. Kevin Spacey was all wrong ('a great, damp loaf of a body')

Which other film roles have been so completely miscast as this brilliant example Grin

@FurForksSake - we watched Highlander again last night. Never mind Sean Connery being miscast, Christoph Lambert was as well. Apparently he couldn't speak much English when he was given the role. Grin

Those who complained that Bridget Jones wasn't actually meant to be fat - have you watched the films recently? Renee Zelweger isn't remotely fat either! We were all just brainwashed to think she was with all those red-top newspaper features about her gorging on donuts to put on weight.

sorryforswearing · 07/04/2021 02:29

Stephen Tompkinson as Alan Banks.

sorryforswearing · 07/04/2021 02:30

Stephen Tompkinson as Alan Banks

PurpleRainDancer · 07/04/2021 02:44

Apollonia Kotero cast opposite Prince in Purple Rain, absolutely zero chemistry and looked old enough to be his Mother.

MrsDoctorDear · 07/04/2021 03:06

@GuildfordGal my favourite book ever (even took a road trip to NFL just because of that book) When I eventually got around to watching the film Cate Blanchett just threw me as Petal. She wasn't skanky enough and agree about Kevin Spacey.
John C Reilly would be more suited.

MrsDoctorDear · 07/04/2021 03:13

I mean John C Reilly comes across more vulnerable and brow beaten.

subbysammiexoxo · 07/04/2021 03:25

I also think roger lloyd pack was miscast as barty crouch sr in HP and it shouldve been jim broadbent

emmetgirl · 07/04/2021 04:21

@SusannaMorvern yes! In the books Jack Reacher is described as a very tall, mountain of a man- this is integral to his entire character. Tom Cruise is about 5'6 🤦‍♀️

Scr1bblyGum · 07/04/2021 06:42

Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma

8misskitty8 · 07/04/2021 11:43

George colonel as batman
Antonio banderas in interview with the vampire is nothing like the Armand in the book, but my god is he sexy as hell in the film !

8misskitty8 · 07/04/2021 11:44

That should say clooney, stupid autocorrect

MrsSlocombesPussy · 07/04/2021 12:27

I always pictured LeStat as looking like a big muscly Viking with long blond hair. It's decades since I read the books but I think he is described as being tall for that era and being well built.
I believe AMC have bought the rights to the Anne Rice novels so it will be interesting to see how they cast the roles.
I agree with a PP re Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross. In the books he's described as looking like Denzel Washington

Krook · 07/04/2021 12:39

Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. What were they thinking? Absurd.

There's apparently a new film coming. I know he's not an actor but I always think Derren Brown would make a good Willy Wonka. Quirky and twinkly.

Pinkywoo · 07/04/2021 13:21

@PurpleRainDancer I agree, the part was written for Vanity but her and Prince split up before filming started.

Needhelp101 · 07/04/2021 13:36

@Scr1bblyGum

Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma
Actually, I think Gwyneth made the perfect Emma. Vacuous, bitchy and shallow 😁

Toni Collette, much as I love her, was miscast though. Harriet needs to be very pretty and flighty. "Men of sense do not want silly wives"

MargaretThatcherMilkSnatcher · 07/04/2021 14:45

Everyone in The Night Manager.

Hugh Laurie: wrong (I adore him but he was wrong wrong wrong for the part of Roper)

Elizabeth Debicki: great actress but miscast as Jed.

Olivia Coleman: I loved the idea of making Burke female but OC just plays herself in everything, and this was no different.

Tom Hiddlestone: oh sooooooo wrong, wtf were they thinking?! Pine is a tough guy; he's been in the army in NI during the Troubles, he's sailed a boat single-handed across the Channel (and not the short route), etc etc .... and they give us Tom fecking drippy Hiddlestone?????

kittensarecute · 07/04/2021 15:01

Michael Gambon as Dumbledore.

Just wrong.

kittensarecute · 07/04/2021 15:05

Emma Watson is so miscast in Beauty and the Beast. I think they wanted someone who came across as an intellectual but she also should be kind and warm and EW is more smug and sneery.

Agree with this, she looked the part and I love the film, I have it on DVD, but she was so unlikeable!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/04/2021 15:09

@YesPleaseMary

Julie Walters was totally miscast as Molly Weasley, and whoever wrote the scripts also did her a massive disservice. I hated the way they made her nervous and uncertain when she confronts Bellatrix in the film. She was much more like Malcolm In The Middle’s mum in my head, i.e nothing gets past her, takes no shit and her family are (rightly!) terrified of her.
Yes!!!!
SprungisSpringYaY · 07/04/2021 15:10

Russel crow in a good year.
Such a shame.. Everything else about the film is perfect!

ThePontiacBandit · 07/04/2021 17:26

SprungisSpringYaY hmm Russell Crowe in everything but Gladiator to be fair. Hated his performance in Les Mis!

Haven't read the book so I'm not expert as you but I agree that Hugh Laurie was totally wrong, maybe cast against type but it didn't work and yes, OC is the same in everything so it depends on the part and Elizabeth Debicki seemed uncomfortable and flat.

Only thing I disagree with is Hiddleston - he might have been wrong for the book character but he set the screen on fire and I think was a big part of the success of the show.

ilovebagpuss · 07/04/2021 17:41

@Shodan I totally agree about Claire in Outlander. I love the books and I was so looking forward to the series but I just can’t get into it.
She is a very good actress I just can’t see her as the character. It’s definitely something to do with how she speaks she is too cut glass posh it’s a funny accent.

Everybody in Les Miserables

Everybody in Mamma Mia

Hayden Christianson in Star Wars 1-3

Natalie Portman in everything except Leon
