Which months have 31 days...?

Just watching last night’s Taskmaster and the task is to come up with something memorable to replace the “30 days hath September “ poem.

Just had a discussion with DH - until I was 8 in lived in the central belt of Scotland and we just learned the rhyme.

When I was 9 I moved to Perthshire and there was a COMPLETELY MAD was to work it out ON YOUR KNUCKLES.

DH has just looked at me like I’m a crazy person but tbf I’m not an expert in this method as I moved there when I was 9, already knew the poem and my classmates already knew the knuckle thing.

Does anyone else - maybe from Perthshire - know the KNUCKLE THING.

Tbf my husband already worried about my education

I learnt the knuckle way at school in Warwickshire, it's much easier than the silly rhyme that doesn't even scan properly.

Bloodypunkrockers · 02/04/2021 22:31

Perth born and bred

We did the rhyme in P1 or 2

Never heard of knuckles

howmanyhats · 02/04/2021 22:33

I came on this thread to share the knuckle thing with you Grin

I learnt it at primary school in the 80s.

HelpLegalAdvicePlease · 02/04/2021 22:33

@RiaOverTheRainbow yeah I also remember the double tapping but when we first learned it (age 5ish) we would do it in pairs with one holding fists out and the other tapping. If doing it on one hand and we got confused by the 'double-tap' for July and August we were told to just go back to the first knuckle on the one hand as a PP mentioned which works too.

I'm loving this thread as I always thought it was a Dutch thing as no one I've ever met here had heard of the 'Knuckle method' 🤣 (and people have tried -in vain- to teach me the rhyme!)

snidgetowl · 02/04/2021 22:35

Learnt the knuckle method and the 9 times tables using fingers at primary school in West Wales in the 90s.

PrintempsAhoy · 02/04/2021 22:38

Knuckle method in rural Denmark!

BackforGood · 02/04/2021 22:41

Well, this is an "I was today years old when I learned...." day Grin

I grew up in England (Midlands) and know the poem well but have never heard of the knuckle method before.

Every day is a school day.

PocketFullOfPuddocks · 02/04/2021 22:42

I grew up in Perthshire and learned the rhyme. I’ve never heard of the knuckle way! Still live and work in a Perthshire school so I could learn it and pass it on to future Perthshire generations Grin

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

I know the song and the knuckle thing. I also just know which ones have 31days; it’s like a vibe they give off.
This. I know how many days every month has straight off the top of my head, they just 'feel' a certain way, lol
Teamox · 02/04/2021 23:02

Yep. Use the knuckle method. I just can't remember the rhyme. I get to "30 days hath September...." and then blank.

I also have a lot of difficulty remembering times tables. I absolutely use the 9x table on fingers thing, but does anyone else know the times tables from 6x6 up to 9x9 on the fingers trick? I showed by DH once and he just could not understand how I find it easier than just learning them! Hmm But I can do it really quickly!

You put you hands in front of you, palms towards you, fingers facing fingers, so little fingers are on the bottom and thumbs on top. Then join up the fingers you want to multiply. Fingers are numbered as: Little fingers are 6 and thumbs are 10.

So, say you want to do 7x8, you join finger 7 on one hand to finger 8 on the other. The joined fingers plus any fingers below are 'tens' so = 50 and then you multiply any fingers left above the joined fingers left fingers x right fingers, so 2x3 = 6. So 7x8 =56!

Hang on, I'll see if I can find a link as no one is going to be able to follow that!

Part 2 of 2 (under the 9x tables)

I am French and the knuckle thing is the only way of knowing in France, everyone knows it and does it. No song!

FourNaanJeremy · 02/04/2021 23:11

I was taught the knuckle thing but never heard a rhyme about it. I’m in the north east.

Teamox · 02/04/2021 23:18

^Oh yeah and sorry, learnt the knuckle thing at some point in the Midlands

JackieTheFart · 02/04/2021 23:24

I know both, although I couldn’t tell you how I know them!

Also brought up in the Shire, Hertfordshire in my case Grin, might be a hobbit.

purplebatbear · 02/04/2021 23:41

Rhyme, knuckles and memory! In that order!

MyPatchworkQuilt · 02/04/2021 23:45

I did the knuckle thing today to check April. I probably do know by now (am 40) but just to make sure!

BerniesMittens · 02/04/2021 23:53

Knuckle thing comes out with September with 31 days. Think I'll stick with the rhyme. If I need to check... 🙄

MintLampShade · 03/04/2021 00:06

I have absolutely no connections to Australia or Scotland and I know the knuckle month count. My granddad taught it to me and my brother when we were kids. He also had nothing to do with either nations 🤔

RedBullBlood · 03/04/2021 01:15

You must be doing it wrong, BerniesMittens. Start from the left knuckle on the left hand, that gives you four knuckles and three dips (end with July). The first knuckle on the right hand is August, the next dip is September.

You put thumbless fists together like in this photo.

@teamox Ooh, I didn't know that way of doing the times tables. I love that!

ScarfaceCwaw · 03/04/2021 08:46

Just FTR, I am NIrish and only knew the rhyme. I am also now thoroughly freaked out by the word "knuckle".

stevematekatemate · 03/04/2021 08:47

I am Perthshire and until this post have never heard of the knuckle thing.

ThankYouKindly · 03/04/2021 09:20

Yep NIrish too @ScarfaceCwaw and only knew the rhyme.

Never heard of the 9 times tables thing either. Sorely tempted to forgo my lie in just to go down and show Dh and DD
