Just watching last night’s Taskmaster and the task is to come up with something memorable to replace the “30 days hath September “ poem.

Just had a discussion with DH - until I was 8 in lived in the central belt of Scotland and we just learned the rhyme.

When I was 9 I moved to Perthshire and there was a COMPLETELY MAD was to work it out ON YOUR KNUCKLES.

DH has just looked at me like I’m a crazy person but tbf I’m not an expert in this method as I moved there when I was 9, already knew the poem and my classmates already knew the knuckle thing.

Does anyone else - maybe from Perthshire - know the KNUCKLE THING.

Tbf my husband already worried about my education

If it helps my DH is sighing deeply when I update him.

It’s really annoying him so please help me more..

Not in Scotland but know the knuckle thing (with 2 hands, not doubling back). I was taught the song as well, but the knuckle thing is easier.

Taught it to a colleague at work a couple of years ago and now she uses the knuckle thing as well if she ever needs to work it out.

Knew this would be about taskmaster

@RiaOverTheRainbow

That's interesting Help, I learned it with one fist and the other hand free to tap your knuckles, you reach the end on July then double back, re-tapping your last knuckle for August.
This exactly. Manchester, probably 1970s.

Knuckles.

Taught it in primary school in London

MadCatLadee · 02/04/2021 21:44

Knuckles. East London.

RB68 · 02/04/2021 21:45

just had a chat with DD at 15 and she claims to have been taught the knuckle way in Warwickshire. I had never heard of it before today

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 02/04/2021 21:46

London teaches knuckles. I lived in London 1996-1997

I learned knuckles (both hands, no doubling back) AND the poem at school. Derbyshire, early 90s.

@RB68 she is amazing

I remember being shown the knuckle way by my teacher in Leeds. Don’t think she was Scottish...

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 02/04/2021 21:52

My parents told me the poem so I knew that first.

toomanyplants · 02/04/2021 21:52

Well today I learned the knuckle method!! Thanks!!!
I've always used the "30 days has September......" rhyme!
No more of that for me, knuckles all day long from now on
P.s..... I'm mid 40's, how has this passed me by?

PolytheneHam · 02/04/2021 21:53

We did the knuckle thing. East Midlands.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 02/04/2021 21:54

I know both. Grew up in the south east. When we had this discussion at work nobody under 35 knew either method. 🤷‍♀️

justwaydamin · 02/04/2021 21:54

I'm south east and I know the knuckle thing but..... I've never admitted this out loud... I don't know the rhyme Blush

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/04/2021 21:56

I'm in Berkshire and know the rhyme and the knuckle thing, although I think we were taught the rhyme at school. Not sure where I learnt the knuckles.

YummyInMyTummy · 02/04/2021 21:57

I know the knuckle method (both hands, no doubling back - though I like the doubling back way now I know it!). I grew up in Surrey. My husband has heard of the knuckle method but doesn’t know how to do it, he grew up in Portsmouth.

Wallabyone · 02/04/2021 21:58

My mum taught me the knuckle technique (south east here!) and it's great! I thought everyone knew it 😂

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/04/2021 21:59

Just out of interest, how many of you know the finger method for 9 times table?

EileenGC · 02/04/2021 22:00

😱 This is so fascinating.

I’m not from the UK and we were just meant to know. No magic way of knowing which months had 31 days, you just learnt it 😂

This makes so much sense! I love the knuckle method. Off to google this poem everyone is talking about!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 02/04/2021 22:00

30 days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31, except for February alone which has 28 days clear but 29 in a leap year.

Ninkanink · 02/04/2021 22:01

Yes the knuckle thing is real...

Procrastatron · 02/04/2021 22:01

But why happens to the last dip and the last knuckle on the second?
