Can we talk about dog bowls in the dishwasher?

I can’t bring myself to put my dog bowls in the dishwasher and I noticed on another thread recently that others feel the same way. However, my rationale mind tells me that the dishwasher cleans at a hot enough temperature to kill any germs, so is it really gross or is it just in my mind?

Why wouldn’t you put dog bowls in? How weird.

BiteyShark · 02/04/2021 17:28

Ours goes in on its own cycle about once every 2 weeks. They get hand washed after each meal but the dishwasher gets them really clean.

If it was gross to wash dog bowels in it then I would be asking for my money back given that dishwashing should make things clean when they come out.

But this is MN when I have seen people wash towels each time they are used to dry a clean body Hmm

We have 4 cats plus fosters so about a quarter of every load is cat bowls. I bought about 20 of the flattish tin plate type because they stack efficiently in the DW.

I also do the kitchen bin and oven door glass but that gets its own cycle mainly due to space and do a cleaning cycle after the bin cycle.

My dog is nearly 12. Nothing awful has happened to us yet, even though her bowls go in the dishwasher.

If you ever hang around on the singletrackworld chat forum, which is dominated by male mostly middle class mountain bikers, you'll get threads discussing which of their bike parts they can get away with dish washing without pissing their wives off too much.

I put the cat bowl in and me and my dh are vegetarian

waitingpatientlyforspring · 02/04/2021 17:51

Our cat bowls go in there. Its washed at a much higher temperature than hand washing. I don't see whats so bad about it.

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 02/04/2021 17:53

Very eye opening.

I know I probably should, but I just can’t. Like a previous poster I also insist they get washed in the utility room not the kitchen.

While I’m on the theme of dishwashers does anyone know how you make toffee vodka in it?

This just doesn't sit well with me either.. I will put them in the dishwasher with other bits such as my oven racks but not my general daily things.

savanahnana · 02/04/2021 17:56

And I'm also the same as I won't wash them in my kitchen sink, utility only

AIMD · 02/04/2021 17:58

I hate dog bowls in dishwasher. However I’m not a dog person so most aspect of dog ownership gross me out a bit, so I’m not a good judge.

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2021 18:24

@GoingBacktoSchool123 toffee vodka you say? Take one bottle of vodka and a handful of toffees. Decant enough vodka from the bottle to allow toffees to fit in. Seal bottle. Put in dishwasher on a normal wash. Take out and shake well. Result: toffee vodka. Disclaimer: have only tried this method with sherbet lemons, but I'm sure it'll work the same way.

Shineonyoucrazy · 02/04/2021 19:12

My cats don't like their bowls to go in the dishwasher. They don't like them smelling of dishwasher tabs. They prefer me to wash them in hot water and washing soda.

Twoforthree · 02/04/2021 19:15

I wash them with our dishes in the dishwasher. Why not?

MajesticWhine · 02/04/2021 19:18

I don't get the problem with this at all. But my puppy had a drink of my tea the other day and I couldn't be bothered to make another mug so I just carried on drinking it. So I guess I'm just gross.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/04/2021 19:20

My pet bowls go in my dishwasher. I can’t get worked up about it

Nooooooooo Is this a thing dog owners do generally?
wigjuice · 02/04/2021 20:17

If you find it gross, then don't do it, that is entirely your perogative. Personally I wash them first then bung them in the dishwasher.

BertieBotts · 02/04/2021 20:19

I always washed my cat's bowls in the same washing up water as our normal plates etc - I don't see a dishwasher as being anything different?

Besides I put loads of disgusting things I wouldn't eat in my dishwasher.

Raw meat remnants.
Sour milk that has congealed in a bowl or bottle, sometimes for days.
Rank mouldy forgotten lunchboxes.
Food that gives me a gastric reaction.

Dog/cat food seems pretty tame compared to these things.

Anordinarymum · 03/04/2021 00:22

I just don't understand why people get so worked up over trivial things. The dishwasher is not the only household implement to be used for cleaning items that are awkward or bulky in my house

I wash rugs in the bath. It's convenient especially if one of the pets has had an accident. I wash quilts if they are too big for the washer.

I bath my dog in the bath and sometimes she goes in the shower with me.

Today I washed a child's car seat in the bath. It was the best place for the job.

My grandson sometimes gets his bath in the kitchen sink. Why not?

When I was a child my mother bathed us all in the sink as we had no bathroom. It was stone and had a wooden draining board. When we eventually moved to a house with a bathroom she put all four of us in the bath on a Sunday night. We only had one bath a week.

Now I can shower ten times a day if I want and I can put a loo brush in the dishwasher too. ( I don't but the option is there :)

Champagneforeveryone · 03/04/2021 02:58

I bung the cat and dog dishes in without a second thought. If I wasn't the only child to have produced a grandchild I suspect this is the thing DM would have disowned me for Grin
