Can we talk about dog bowls in the dishwasher?

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 02/04/2021 14:00

I can’t bring myself to put my dog bowls in the dishwasher and I noticed on another thread recently that others feel the same way. However, my rationale mind tells me that the dishwasher cleans at a hot enough temperature to kill any germs, so is it really gross or is it just in my mind?

@Anordinarymum

I can't 'prove it' as I don't live with any of them, but all YOU need to do is advance search and you'll find threads about things people out in their dishwasher. It's utterly utterly disgusting.

Toilet seats
Toilet brushes
Horse bridles
Crocs
Football boots

All manner of weird shit.

Bins
Mooncups

Those threads are eye openers.

Your crocs? Well I’ll be blowed.

Toilet seats?! I’m feeling queasy

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/04/2021 14:54

@Anordinarymum

JFC

JUST read another of your posts.

You put crocs & hairbrushes in 🤮 why aggressively demand someone 'proves' other people put weird stuff in too???

Babdoc · 02/04/2021 14:55

I have been putting cat bowls in with the human crockery and cutlery in my dishwasher for over 30 years, including when my DC were babies and toddlers.
Still not had any problems.

@Cissyandflora

They are threads best avoided. It's been a couple of years snd I still can't get the images out of my head 🤮

I've blanked out a lot though ... oh just remembered 'potty'. 🤮

Babdoc · 02/04/2021 14:57

Should add, dishwashers wash at 65C and rinse at 80C. The hottest water you can stand hand washing without scalding yourself is 44C. Guess which method kills more germs on your dog bowl!

Overdueanamechange · 02/04/2021 14:57

Absolutely fine to. I let the dog lick the plate clean when we've eaten, so there is no difference.

LilaButterfly · 02/04/2021 15:01

My dogs have on occasion licked inside my mouth.. I dont think a dog bowl in the dishwasher will kill us.

WorraLiberty · 02/04/2021 15:02

I'm glad it's not just me who saw the toilet seat posts 🤣

If I remember rightly, a few MNetters were poaching salmon in their dishwashers too.

I hope to God they're not the same as the toilet seat washers 🤭

lillypond75 · 02/04/2021 15:03

Lol. My dog and cat's bowls all go in the dishwasher. Never given it a second thought. If you're not comfortable with it then don't do it but I personally don't fancy the extra work of hand washing it all.

lillypond75 · 02/04/2021 15:06

@WorraLiberty

Some MNetters but their toilet seats and toilet brushes in the dishwasher.
Ok, that is where I draw the line 😳
RickiTarr · 02/04/2021 15:10

Also making flavoured vodka. Probably all at once.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/04/2021 15:18

My cat and dog bowls go in without a second thought. I don’t get why it’s an issue at all.

ReassuringlyExpensive · 02/04/2021 16:39

What’s wrong with it?

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2021 16:45

I always do

Along with loo brushes

My only concession is they get a cycle of their own

Alannathelioness · 02/04/2021 16:52

Absolutely fine to go in the dishwasher. The dog food I feed my dog is probably better than half the stuff I eat anyway and my Dog isn't a big drooler so really can't see the slightest issue.
I also put my bin lid in, also surprised that has come up as weird/disgusting. How dirty does your bin lid get Confused

No, that's just disgusting.

Yes this - some ppl put their mooncups in too I think

Delatron · 02/04/2021 17:02

Was about to say I remember some people saying on here they put toilet brushes in the dishwasher. See it’s true!

A dog bowl yes don’t see why not. Before having a dog I would have thought this to be disgusting though. Plus dog licking plates etc. Let him do all that now!

I remember once a friends asking for a bowl of water for their dog and I was really put out that I had to use one of my bowls that I ate out of. Weird of me!

Happytentoes · 02/04/2021 17:14

@RickiTarr yeah, I guess I have issues. I also have a crap dishwasher but that’s another story.
There’s never any food to be scraped off though - Labradors !

I’m very uptight about water bills but constantly covered in dog dribble. So maybe we should try to meet in the middle? Grin

cooperage · 02/04/2021 17:19

Why on earth wouldn't you put dog bowls in the dishwasher?

The whole point of the machine is to clean and sanitise the contents with really hot water and soap! Which is exactly what you do in the sink, except in an enclosed area not a splashy open space.

I draw the line at loo brushes and seats though, that's just gross.

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2021 17:23

Nope. I can't put dog bowls in the dishwasher. I just can't.

They don't even get washed in the kitchen sink, we've got a utility room so they get done in the sink in there.

As for putting loo brushes etc in there, the very thought makes me feel sick. Just grim.
