First dance songs

Me and my partner are getting married next year and am looking for nice first dance songs.

The cliche popular ones (Ed Sheehan, Bryan adams etc etc) we don’t want. The only one we thought ‘Oo that could be interesting’ was an acoustic version of Nothing else matters by Metallica.

Any ideas? What was your first dance? ☺️

Ours was "The luckiest" by Ben Folds. But then we both love that song already.

Is there any song you both like or reminds you of your DP / a lovely time with your DP? It doesn't have to be romantic or slow. You can have anything. Any gig you've been to, or film you both love there's a song from ? Something that reminds you of your first holiday together or a date.

We have absolutely nothing! No ‘our song’ or similar. The only song that we both sing along to and find romantic is iris by the goo goo dolls. But everyone has that, and my brother had it for his only a year or two ago. So that was off the table for that reason.

I should add though, My Sacrifice is about overcoming addiction rather than being a "love" song but the lyrics and melody just fit for us plus it has relevance to when/how we met.

Do you have anything personal like that?

you could always spend time practicing a fun routine, it is pretty dull for the guests to watch a couple walking around hugging which is what a slow dance is...

I used to have a collection of 'we had our first dance to Amazed by Lonestar' snippets that I tore out of my mum's Take a Breaks! I was a bit of a music snob back then.

We had 'I Know I Loved You' by Savage Garden, which probably isn't much better but had meaning to us.

It was going to be 'Amigos Para Siempre' when I was going to marry Cesc Fabregas, but I'm still waiting on that one...

We had This Will Be Our Year by The Zombies. It also has the benefit of being very short! Other options were God Only Knows (Beach Boys) and Lets Get Married (Proclaimers) and How Long Will I Love You (Waterboys)

We had Let it Be Me by the Everley Brothers. Special song for the pair of us.

One thing if you are planning a slow first dance. Check out how long the song is and whether you feel comfortable shuffling round the dancefloor on your own for the whole song. Our DJ asked if we wanted to do the first verse on our own, and then the rest of the guests being invited to join us when we were talking over the music with her, and we said 'nah, we'll be fine'. Never has a song seemed so long....

We had Amazed Blush, but by Ryan (not Bryan) Adams. Left to my own devices, it would have been Beautiful in my eyes by Joshua Kaddison. It was on the same album as his only UK hit, Jesse.

We had for once in my life by Stevie Wonder. We aren't really "stand and sway" type dancers so we had a disco tune to dance to, which is much more us.

We considered having Nothing Else Matters by Metallica but then realised there was no law saying we needed to do the ridiculous ‘swaying together in the middle of the dance floor’ bollocks so didn’t bother in the end Grin

For Lovers by Wolfman and Pete Doherty.
We both loved the libertines and the song (in our opinion) is beautiful. First verse on our own and then everyone else up when chorus kicks in.
