@IlonaRN Well spotted, I didn't notice the time change

So yes 10

summeriscomingsoon · 20/03/2021 14:28

@knittingaddict

husband says 10 if the time on the clock and the number of bananas and choc chips matters

Oooh late star awarded ⭐️

That's not good enough. He's on domestic duties today while I'm decorating. Takeaway?

summeriscomingsoon · 20/03/2021 14:31

Takeaway it is!

@Hallyup5

I think you want me to say that the answer is 10, but I'm going to say that it's unanswerable. There is nothing to say that one banana is half of two, that a chocolate chip equals one, or that a clock set to 2 is 2/3 of a clock set to 3. It's all assumptions.

I hate these.

I’m with you on this. The cookie in particular annoys me - choc chips are all worth one but the cookie itself has no value? Ridiculous.

The value of the clock changes depending on the time of day? Ridiculous.

  1. 3 pizzas (biscuits) = 30 that means they are 10 each
  2. Deduct 1 pizza (10) from 14, means bananas are 2 each
  3. Deduct 1 banana (2) from 8, means clocks are 3 each

1 clock (3) + 2 bananas (4) = 7 x 1 pizza (10) = 70

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 20/03/2021 14:33

I love how most of us have assumed the cookie has chocolate chips in. Then some people have called them raisins Grin

@HowManyToes You can model it in real life which is useful when teaching. If you open your purse and take out a £2 coin then three tenners you can write this as 2 + 3 x10. If you’re trying to work out how much money you have you wouldn’t add the 2 and the 3 then multiply by 10. You’d multiply the tenners first then add the 2.
Thank you so much! No one has ever been able to explain it to me other than "because that's how maths works".

@Sbk28 DS1 is HmmConfused at your logic. But I assume you're on a wind up.

To the posters who say BIDMAS wasn't a "thing" when they were at school... out of interest how old are you?

And I know if you call it BODMAS the 'O' stands for order, and means the same as indices ds told me today what that means but order just doesn't make sense Hmm

Crankley · 20/03/2021 14:34

Pffft, give up if you need to ponce about with time on clocks, I can just about identify them as clocks, thought they were teapots originally,

10, defo. These memes are on FB a lot. I was shit at maths at school (because I didn’t listen and thought my social life was more important) and BODMAS passed me by, but I’ve managed to learn a lot since having kids. I thought it was important because I wanted to be able to help them with their homework and didn’t want them to see a role model who just says ‘Oh, I’m rubbish at maths’ with the implication that there was nothing I could do about it.

DadDadDad · 20/03/2021 14:35

I agree with your points, @HowManyToes and @Hallyup5 . The title of these kinds of puzzles (saying "only 1 in 7 will get this" - really? have they scientifically tested this on a random sample?) shows that they are not to be taken seriously.

I've got a maths degree but I'm not going to get too bothered if I fail to mind-read the intentions of the question-setter.
