Not an AIBU but I know this topic gets traffic.

Wondered if anyone knows the right answer -

Can the census form be filled out before? I've submitted mine and it went through fine no problem.

However, the letter says to be completed on Sunday or a few days after but yet online it says you can fill it once you receive your letter.

So which is it?

I'm hoping I haven't done it wrong by completing it before Sunday.

@Xenia, thanks for that but that’s what I’ve already done and my address isn’t listed on the house numbers that come up!
I managed to get through to them this afternoon and the lady I spoke to said she would have to escalate it to a manager to call me back regarding this. I’m still waiting for the call, but at least I can prove I tried to complete it if knew come knocking with a fine!
Although they may not... as my house clearly doesn’t exist... 🤔😂😂

Xenia · 20/03/2021 17:40

I was surprised it says you put down students at their parental home address and then they also fill it out at university address as that seems like double counting to me! I had to read it a few times to work all that out.

(I still regard myself as (Catholic) Christian and don't feel comfortable putting atheist - in 10 years I might change I suppose; very pleased daughter getting married next month in Catholic church, grandchildren baptised there too)

en0la · 20/03/2021 17:42

@Newschapter

My neighbours don't do online stuff.

They currently have covid and when my dh popped over to their door to leave some food they had left it under a plant pot for us to fill in for them...

I don't have a fucking clue what qualifications they have, but would be quite sure of the rest (they're also relations of DH's)

So now I'm going to have to ring them tomorrow when filling it in. 🙄 No good deed and all that, eh?

Get your Dh to do it, it's his family

We did ours today, the only interesting bit was the stuff about nationality where European was an option so we all put that.

It did seem a bit contradictory. Hope there's no fines for incompetent filling out of the Census if I've made the wrong call.

@Xenia

Yes as long as you know what will happen then. I did mine just now. There is also guidance for students too eg I had one son who lives at home and studies here who is differently treated than the other who also lives at home as main address but has a university term time address too. All 3 go on my census form but the details slightly differ. My son who lives at university also has to complete it there. I just sent him a screen shot " - Students - include yourself at both your term time and out of term time addresses."

Gas central heating comes to the fore this year. I think 1911 was more interesting - how many babies have you had and how many are still living which sadly was 9 born and only 3 still alive for my ancestor in one case, poor her, baby after baby after child had died. As a memorial to all the dead babies I made it my mission to find their details and log them and buy the birth and death certs; whereas another had had 11 children and 10 of those survived. I think that was more interesting that gas central heating. The only reason the state is asking about that is they want to abolish it and take away from us our wonderful lovely radiators.

I think it is best people do it this weekend as it is to reflect how things are on 21 March - tomorrow if I remember correctly. It was irritating for me that in 1841 a one year old ancestor was visiting another family (very weird) although back in the family home by 1851 census.

They have asked about gas central heating for a while now,

That’s what I’m thinking. A £1000 fine for not putting my uni student down would finish me off Sad

Please don't worry. It's not like he doesn't exist *anywhere^ you aren't denying his existence. I feel the ball is in their court now and if they want to ask further bring it on re DS1. I don't think we're the only ones a bit Confused by it all.

Then dont answer it. I didnt answer half the questions as I thought them irrelevant

trappedsincesundaymorn · 20/03/2021 17:57

I've done 5 this week for people in supported living, all on-line and all gone through with no problems. Hopefully I'll get my own done sometime in the next few days Grin

RichardMarxisinnocent · 20/03/2021 17:59

She was rather perplexed by the question asking if she had a door on her bathroom.
I completed mine this morning- I don't recall a question about whether my bathroom has a door? There was one something along the lines of whether your bathroom, kitchen and living spaces are behind a front door, or if you share any of them with another household.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 20/03/2021 18:02

Just checked, it was this one:
Are all the rooms in this accommodation, including the kitchen, bathroom and toilet, behind a door that only this household can use?

They want to know whether you share any rooms with another household, not whether each room has a door.

latedecember1963 · 20/03/2021 18:16

Ah, I must have misinterpreted the question. I'm pretty sure her response was ok because it wasn't queried.

BackforGood · 20/03/2021 18:44

The thing that bothers me, is that they will use the answers to these questions for planning purposes e.g traffic etc, but it asks you to fill in the working from home questions based on what you are doing now.

Well no I don't commute now, because we are in lockdown and have been asked to work from home. In June it will be a different matter because we will be going back to the office

This crossed my mind too. It is going to make a LOT of people's answers different from what they would be in the other 9 years since the last one or until the next one.

80sMum · 20/03/2021 18:48

I submitted mine just over a week ago! Wanted to get in done in case I lost the letter with the access code on it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 19:12

I think this will be on of the most useless cencuses in a history of census going by what I've seen on Twitter

censusresearch · 20/03/2021 19:43

census.gov.uk/help/types-of-household-or-accommodation/students-what-you-need-to-know

What students need to do, basically be on the census at both addresses.

CoRhona · 20/03/2021 21:49

@censusresearch I filled it in online and it won't let me change it after submission. I need to add DS at uni, do I need to apply for a paper copy and add him on?

TIA

Frownette · 20/03/2021 21:55

It's tricky isn't it, different from last time. I hadn't received a letter so requested a code online earlier and completed it.

I don't know, I thought it'd let you change it but it's not my area of expertise so I'd phone the helpline and ask if it's concerning you.

file:/C:/Users/COMPUT~1/AppData/Local/Temp/2011censusquestionnaireenglandh1.pdf Although the state is keen we get rid of all gas central heating the person who said above the question was on the census before is correct. I just checked and they were asking 10 years ago too.
Next year the 1921 census will be published and those of us into family trees are excited about that.

A student being on on two addresses is interesting. I suppose computers mean we do not then over count the number of people by adding students into the population twice.

It's a common census data then that previous areas which were coal mining areas had a low rate of gas central heating because the former mining areas used coal more than gas. You can see the impact of that in the 2001 census more than in the 2011 census and no doubt it'll have more GCH this time round.

You also get interesting little historical quirks like a high proportion of Scottish residents in Corby after Scottish people moved there for the steel works in the 30s.

mum2jakie · 20/03/2021 22:11

Don't understand the reference to gas central heating? Doesn't most central heating run on gas? What are they trying to introduce?

emilyfrost · 20/03/2021 22:12

@WorraLiberty

Does anyone know if there's an option to save it halfway through and come back to it, if you get disturbed?
Yeah, just save it at the end of each section and when you next sign in it saves what you’ve done up to that point
LIZS · 20/03/2021 22:16

So do we include dd at uni or not? We had assumed not until I saw reference just now. She is in Scotland where there is no census until next year.
