Bitterly disappointed. Devastated

Spring is round the corner, sun is shining, birds are singing, so thought I'd treat myself.

As we all know, the food of gods is the fish finger butty. So thought I'd channel my inner Gordon Ramsey and create the mother of all fish finger butties.
I've got a fresh fillet of fish, cornish salted butter, artisan poncey bread (with misshapen seeds it was that posh) and tarter sauce that was FIVE blooming quid.

Readers, it was terrible. I could cry for a Tesco value loaf and a couple of birds eye.

Off to buy myself a bottle of cheap plonk as I cant console myself with nice wine as I SPENT £16 ON A FISH FINGER BUTTY.

Sad < so very sad

You’ve just helped me decide on dinner. Shopping has just arrived but can’t be bothered to cook. Was looking at a Turkish place in uber eats, but now I fancy fishfinger sandwich, with loads of ketchup.
Beige freezer dinner it is.

I’ve also been food disappointed this week. I’ve been on leave so have been on some walks.

I bought a pasty and a coffee from the park cafe. Looked lovely. First time I’ve been to this park since Sept, so really anticipated it. The pasty was bland and I couldn’t say what in the middle. The coffee was bland.

Day after, another park. Cheese salad sandwich and coffee. Cheap spread, not butter, cheese that was tasteless, and worst of all there was a sycamore seed in the middle of the salad (at least I hope that’s what it was!). The coffee was ok.

Terrible looking forward to nice food, then being really disappointed! Especially when it could be the highlight of your week (so sad that a park cafe pasty was going to be the highlight of my week)

But £16 for a homemade fish sarnie Shock

2 slices Braces wholemeal bread (tastier and better at holding together) Heinz tomato ketchup (only proper reason to have it in the house) salted butter and fish fingers done to be slightly crispy. Once they're in place atop a spreading of ketchup on the bottom slice of buttered bread, give them a quick sprinkle with malt vinegar before the second slice. Eat immediately. Lush.

The halloumi courgette lady needs her own cooking show! 😂 "I could use a brush but I've got fingers". Proper no nonsense instructions without a boring anecdote to listen to.

JungOwlWan · 27/02/2021 18:17

Mmmm i want a fishfinger sandwich now. What tartar sauce is THE best tartar ssuce ?

AnExcellentWalker · 27/02/2021 18:32

I've just marked the halloumi courgette recipe to make another day, it looks really nice.

And I disagree about the fishfinger sandwich. I made a fancy one once. With a (battered) fillet, nice mayonnaise (I don't like ketchup), decent seeded bread. It was lovely. I'm obviously an aberration.

refusetobeasheep · 27/02/2021 19:11

For those interested in the halloumi courgette recipe, the you tube misses out temperature - it's 220 / 200 fan / gas 7. Also I differ from Courgette lady, I love it with added chilli flakes!

Ah, food disappointment is the very worst, commiserations OP. Slightly off tangent, but I have recently discovered Aldi’s tempura fish burgers and southern fried fish burgers - they’re both delicious and elevate the fish in breadcrumbs sandwich to another level.

I remember having to go to the doctor for a slipped disc and passing a bakery which had some lovely looking apple turnovers in the window. I was feeling sore and miserable and decided to queue up and get one.

The bakery had all its signage in a other language. Another alphabet so I couldn’t even try to figure out what things were. I got my apple turnover.

I almost cried when I took a bite and it was some horrible, sour cheese monstrosity.

ADLI BATTERED FISH FINGERS.

Yes, I'm shouting.

AlternativePerspective · 27/02/2021 20:14

Is it just my feed which is now full of Aldi adverts? Grin

amusedbush · 27/02/2021 20:18

Noooo a major part of what makes a fish finger sandwich so good is the trashiness. Warburtons ‘toastie’ white bread, butter, fish fingers and brown sauce.

Dinner of champions.

unicornpower · 27/02/2021 20:18

Has to be captain birds eye for fish finger goodness! I hate food disappointment so much OP so I fully sympathise with this trauma. I really fancy a fish finger sandwich now but alas I'm still in the sicky stages of pregnancy and baby doesn't seem to like a fat lot I eat and I don't want to be put off!

Also I hate when gravy is faffed up and presented as a 'jus'. Just give me that gorgeous beef gravy 😋

Stopcollaborateandlisten77 · 27/02/2021 20:21

@amusedbush I agree, but replace the brown sauce for mayo. None of my normal seeded, cereal brown bread, proper WHITE, unhealthy yuminess

Absolutely, the fewer nutrients the better Grin

Pukkapiesrule · 27/02/2021 21:05

Have to say the only poncifying of fish finger sandwiches should be to use the captains giant fish fingers. So much easier to get in your mouth without losing a bit out of the sandwich side!!
