Bitterly disappointed. Devastated

Spring is round the corner, sun is shining, birds are singing, so thought I'd treat myself.

As we all know, the food of gods is the fish finger butty. So thought I'd channel my inner Gordon Ramsey and create the mother of all fish finger butties.
I've got a fresh fillet of fish, cornish salted butter, artisan poncey bread (with misshapen seeds it was that posh) and tarter sauce that was FIVE blooming quid.

Readers, it was terrible. I could cry for a Tesco value loaf and a couple of birds eye.

Off to buy myself a bottle of cheap plonk as I cant console myself with nice wine as I SPENT £16 ON A FISH FINGER BUTTY.

Sad < so very sad

@refusetobeasheep please can you link to the Halloumi baked courgette recipe? I need more reasons to eat Halloumi and this sounds delicious!

catinbootsx · 27/02/2021 13:51

You need to batter the fish and slice it. So much better than breadcrumbs

refusetobeasheep · 27/02/2021 13:53

Ohthetastynuts here's the halloumi courgette recipe:

I think your mistake was thinking that paying more money can get you the best. If I'm spending £16 for a sandwich, it won't be a fish finger sandwich.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 27/02/2021 14:04

Hang on, did you actually make your fish into fish fingers, breadcrumbed etc or did you just put the fillet in?
Also why on earth is there butter in there? Doesn’t it melt? I’ve never got people who butter bacon sarnies either.
I agree white sliced is the way to go, really fresh. Waitrose chunky fish fingers are good and the Maille Tartare sauce is lovely too, it’s a bit more expensive than own brand but not a fiver!

BigPaperBag · 27/02/2021 14:06

You’ve really made me want a McDonald’s fillet of fish burger 😋

Thanks!!!! Yum.

Might I politely recommend a fish finger tortilla wrap? Tartare sauce of course. Aldi fish fingers.

Byoodiful.

ifitpleasesandsparkles · 27/02/2021 14:25

@isseys4xmastinselcats

but what you created wasnt a fish finger butty, a proper fish finger butty is sliced supermarket white bread, lurpak butter, birds eye fish fingers and heinz tomato ketchup and ouch £16 for a butty never mind lesson learnt be a cheapskate next time and enjoy a proper butty

This. Except mayo or tartare sauce and a squeeze of lemon instead of tomato sauce. Lots of crispy lettuce on there too.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 27/02/2021 14:26

fresh fillet of fish

This is where you went wrong.

It was a breaded fillet. I put it in whole. I know, I know....

You have to use butter so that it goes all melty into the bread

OP posts:
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 27/02/2021 14:43

I agree with you about the butter. I also have butter in bacon sandwiches so its all melty and delicious.

BeakyWinder · 27/02/2021 14:45

Ugh, that is painful OP.

YY to the hummus too, I spent ages roasting red peppers, skinning them, squeezing 70 million lemons.. and it was just OK.. not as nice as morrisons.

saraclara · 27/02/2021 15:15

@VerityWibbleWobble

Poshing up good old fish finger or bacon butties should be a criminal offence. They need to be greasy spoon style Grin
Absolutely. Posh bacon butties are no good at all. It has to be 'plastic' white sliced bread, cheap bacon, and sauce. None of this sourdough ridiculousness.
LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 27/02/2021 15:18

Reminds me of when I tried to make Queen of Puddings. I ended up with raspberry jam sandwich soup.

Liquorishtoffee · 27/02/2021 15:18

Sorry but your class in butty (whether it be chip, fish finger or sausage) must be all white, using pasty bread and slavered in ketchup. Posh just doesn’t work I’m afraid.

DeciduousPerennial · 27/02/2021 15:20

A fishfinger sandwich is only a fishfinger sandwich if the fishfingers came from a box in the freezer, the bread came presliced in a bag (and is of the white variety) and nothing approaching a vegetable went anywhere near it. Choice of sauce optional, but anything beyond ketchup, mayo, or bog standard tartare opens you up to accusations of poncery. There can be no frippery with a fishfinger sandwich, or pretensions of grandeur.

What you made was definitely not a fishfinger sandwich.

Leon do a great fish finder wrap. Food of gods indeed.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/02/2021 16:42

Waves to fellow hummus philistines.

I also like a fish finger wrap and kid myself it's fish tacos. Because we usually have big wraps in, I usually quarter the wraps and fill each quarter with a fish finger, iceberg lettuce and chilli sauce, maybe also sour cream or Greek yogurt, cucumber and grated cheese.

MinnieMountain · 27/02/2021 17:25

Have you tried Delia’s recipe @LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour?

I haven’t made Queen of Puddings for ages but I want it now.

NuniaBeeswax · 27/02/2021 17:30

Your first mistake is eating fish fingers in the first place. It's all about fish cakes...

numberthirtytwoWindsorGardens · 27/02/2021 18:01

Halloumi baked courgette, @refusetobeasheep? Please share this recipe - it sounds as if it will make my life!

Respectmyauthoritah · 27/02/2021 18:06

Battered fishfingers are the shit.

Batshittery · 27/02/2021 18:10

DH tried to add thyme to Yorkshire pudding batter. I luckily caught him in the act before he cooked it. Yorkshire puddings are perfect as they are!

Shock Shock

BingThing Good job you caught him. No poncing is ever required of Yorkshire puddings
