Any greyhound owners here?

We don’t know any others in real life! I’m struggling today so I thought I’d do a light hearted post about greyhounds and how wonderfully quirky they are :)

We adopted our handsome boy in august after wanting one for years. We lost our beloved schnauzer in January last year and decided in August the time was right. We went to the kennels and he was one of three greyhounds we walked. He was the second hound we walked and I knew within minutes he was the one for me Smile He has truly healed my heart.

I love the bear grunt noises he makes when he’s asleep (even at 3am). I love his goofy teef and his crooked tail and the way his paws smell like popcorn. I love that he’s never lived in a house before let alone lived with children, yet he snuggles up to my kids like a big teddy. I love that he is Shadow Dog and never leaves my side (even when I’m tripping over him while trying to cook the dinner).

I can’t wait for when restrictions are lifted a bit and my local greyhound charity can resume their monthly walks so he can have some buddies. And so I can book the new dog exercise field and let him run til his heart is content. I can thank him for the fact I’m getting fake grass laid in spring (he has turned our back garden into Glastonbury after a very wet weekend) Grin

Would love to hear about your hounds and how you found them!

The only down side is the horrible farting

Unhinged is putting our saluki /deerhound mildly..

Electrocute1980 · 04/02/2021 16:42

Thank you @LightDrizzle, I am biased but I think he’s gawjus Grin

@Berthatydfil oh god the farting. It has calmed a little since I changed him to a fish based diet (chicken did something horrendous to his guts!) so it’s better than it was but he can still clear a room occasionally haha

Greyhounds are lovely. I'm an aunt to one; another black ex-racer. He's daft as a brush and a grumpy old sod sometimes, stubborn as a mule about some things but also a total sweetheart. I love his naughty habits like he'll happily jump into the boot of their car to go on a walk as that's exciting, but to get him in the boot to go home again he needs a biscuit treat thrown in first. He destroys all squeaky soft toys, takes up an entire sofa to himself, when he drinks he splashes water all over the kitchen. Bless him.

My pretty girl, snuggling up to the cat.

We've had her since she was about 13 weeks old. The poor little thing was found tied to a lamp post all day Sad

We've never had a greyhound before and she's as quirky as hell. The cat is definitely the boss of her 😂😂

She also gets very cold in Winter and when she has her last trip out into the garden before bed, she comes in and pulls her pyjamas off the radiator and puffs her cheeks until you put them on her 😍

Greyhounds are beautiful, my Gran had one and she was so sweet-natured.

If I had the space I'd love to rehome one.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 04/02/2021 17:14

@WorraLiberty your cat looks a bit like a mirror version of my cat!

I used to have one. She lived happily with 2 cats in the house. Was so gentle and good natured but a bugger for chasing rabbits in the fields!

She went for a dental at the vets and they found her dead in the cage after the operation. She was only 7yo. I was heart broken and said I’d never have another as I know they’re prone to bad teeth.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 04/02/2021 17:26

Sad @Covidcorvid. That’s awful.

Sexnotgender · 04/02/2021 17:41

That’s so sad covid, greys are super sensitive to anaesthesia so you need someone that understands them.

Greys also have unique blood and are universal donors.

WorraLiberty · 04/02/2021 17:45

Ahhh yes willFOURbagsbeenough, your cat is beautiful.

Covidcorvid Thanks

Sadly the owner of the vet practice has a greyhound so I thought it would be ok. On the day she was meant to have her dental she got cancelled due to an emergency and rescheduled. They never told me the owner was on holiday and left the practice with a locum in charge. I didn’t know or I’d have waited. Still had to pay the £400 bill as well!

We have a lurcher: half greyhound/half saluki. Absolutely bonkers. And we wouldn't be without her.

Shallow07 · 04/02/2021 18:26

We had a rescue greyhound when I was a teenager. He was the silliest, smelliest, most adorable dog and was much loved by us all. I never wanted another pet (there was a lot of tension at home throughout my childhood due to my sibling constantly going on about having pets then not taking care of them due to poor MH) but he soon changed my mind. He died 10 years ago and I still miss him.

ImRealHonest · 04/02/2021 18:31

My boy is old and an actual grey hound now.

Came to his first actual home at 11 years old. He’s been taught how to ‘dog’ by an elderly Dalmatian and an elderly lab.

He still hates stairs, loves his bed, and will absolutely never sit or lie down in the car which scares the shit out of me.

Hendalle · 04/02/2021 18:33

One greyhound here!
We adopted him 4years ago, he’s 10 and starting to look his age now.. though he still behaves as if he’s young Grin
I would love to get another grey, I think it would be good for DDog too. But sadly our flat is too small, we’re in a 1 bedroom (with a garden for him to sun bathe him) and it’s large enough to cope with zoomiesx1 but x2 dogs would just be carnage

We’d also need to get a new car. We have a mini, DDog takes up the entire backseat. We have had a lot of fun (pre-pandemic anyway) traveling around with him. Even more fun when DM stayed and I had to squeeze in the back of the car with DDog to travel from London to Cornwall & back Grin

Have you all seen this video, where the guy spends £300 at the vets, only to find out his Lurcher was mimicking him? 🤣🤣

willFOURbagsbeenough · 04/02/2021 18:38

Grin yes!! I cackled far too long at that video!

I have a rescue podenco (Spanish sighthound) - rescued as a stray from Spain. V similar breed to a greyhound in many ways - so quirky and adorable. A few greyhound parents round my way - lovely dogs. If I could wfh all the time and adopt loads of rescue hounds, I would!

Oh I'm so glad I've found this thread!!

I would love a hound. I think they sound beautiful.

We have a mini schnauzer who is very sociable and loves other dogs. We'd love him to have a friend.

We've looked at rescues but a lot of them seem very restrictive - eg. No kids, someone at home always, semi-rural, no other pets. I know they have to rehome wisely but it seems near impossible.

What do I really need to know about greyhounds? Any advice for a greyhound novice?

(TBH the horrendous farting would fit right in with my household)

The6thQueen · 04/02/2021 19:43

Ours isn’t a proper greyhound - but she is a sight hound!
Podenco in her somewhere - those ears are pretty special. 🥰
She’s 2 and had her just over a year after our beautiful staffie died at 12. She’s from the Dog’s Trust, can’t believe someone would ever give her up.
She’s so funny and quirky, as I type this she’s chatting away to me because she wants her walkies! She’s very vocal and loves her zoomies 😂

Wow! Ears! She’ll hear you at the biscuit tin from 3 doors away! Grin

The6thQueen · 04/02/2021 19:50

Tell me about it @willFOURbagsbeenough 🤣
And she puts her eyeliner on far better than I do 😁

So many beautiful doggies on here 😍
