Warning for tailgating - just curious

I’ve been sent the attached - completely accept it and it’s worked, I’ll change my ways (I honestly don’t normally do it, but get frustrated as there's a lot of lane 2, 3 and 4 hoggers, but I still see why I shouldn’t and won’t again)

But I’m just really curious how they detect it from the cameras? Just interested in the technology and how it works.

Anyone know? I drove this route everyday so on my best behaviour now.

what I would really say to the OP would get me banned. So I'll just say that if another person is driving badly, you also driving badly does not help.

I just drove in a responsible manner over time and moved past them on the inside lane.

The problem is that undertaking (“moving past them on the inside lane”) is prohibited.

So you should have moved across the lanes to overtake on the outside, then moved back to the inside lane.

As it happened over miles, presumably you had plenty of opportunity to spot that the issue would occur.

You can’t “responsibly” undertake. If you allow your car to do so, you’re the one doing the dangerous manoeuvre. Slow down, or speed up and change lanes.

Nothing like a bullying tailgater to get me anxious on a motorway. Glad you caught. The M1 has tailgating cameras.

Well I did.

I was not driving dangerously 😂

No you didn't. It isn't possible, in open uncontested conditions to undertake responsibly. So yes, you were therefore driving dangerously. As was the person you undertook.

So if someone is in lane 2 or 3 incorrectly and going at less than the speed limit of the motorway, all other road users are to slow down and allow this clown to lead the way rather than undertake safely, put a bit of pressure from behind so they realise they are incorrect or flash? By this rule the whole motorway could be going at 40 because some cunt doesn't know how to drive.

Well if they are in lane 3 doing that then yes, you should stay behind them and hope they catch themselves on. Much more likely is they would be undertaken, understandable but still incorrect.

If they are in lane 2 then you just go over two lanes to overtake then two lanes back again. This can be done quite pointedly.

If you have a new or nervous driver in the family then show them this video -

BibbityBobbityBellend · 31/12/2020 09:30

@DappledThings agreed about lane two but mostly they don't get it. I don't tailgate but on my way to work every morning, I would spend a lot of my time in the car free lane one. One out of ten cars move over once they realise they are being over and undertaken in the same breathe. A lot of people move straight over into lane two and don't move out of it until they exit.

BibbityBobbityBellend · 31/12/2020 09:31

I'm really glad these cameras are here and hopefully, they will pick up lane hogging too.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 31/12/2020 09:33

Tailgating is dangerous and intimidating. Can't believe they haven't fined you/ give you points.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 31/12/2020 09:41

Not a motorway, but I was being tailgated earlier this week in the fucking snow! I dropped my rear view mirror so I could pretend they weren't there and carried on focusing on the road ahead.

I’m afraid you were. That you’re not willing to change your behaviour should the situation arise again, unfortunately means you’re likely to continue to put other road users in danger. You might think it’s a small risk, but undertaking on a motorway is dangerous.

Of course the middle-lane hogger was driving poorly. But so were you. The rules of the motorway are that you overtake using the lanes to the right, not the left. Speed up and overtake in the correct lane, or slow down. Those are your “responsible” choices.
