Advent Disappointment

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 24/12/2020 08:17

Anyone else disappointed with their advent calendar? I had a Nespresso one and it was a real let down for the price, especially the 24th 'special' surprise.

This is the first time I've bought one for myself. Maybe my expectations were too high 😂

Dh bought me a wine advent calendar, 24 mini bottles of wine, a large glass or so in each. We've shared quite a few of them which has been lovely. Not opened today's yet, we will do it this evening :)

TheMandalorian · 24/12/2020 09:00

Bought the kids a massive 3d Cadbury one which claimed it had chocolate and stickers. Well they only got about 3 stickers. The chocolate was alright, mini freddos and curly whirlys. Next year I'm gonna get them some sort of advent sticker/ puzzle book. Can't stand the chocolate high they've been on every day and ds2 has been getting up super early to whinge for his advent.

Beautiful3 · 24/12/2020 09:00

@isthemeaning my girls have the lindt one too. I got them in the sale reduced from £15 to £5. They weren't impressed with the tiny balls either, however today's is a large chocolate bear!! I'm going to help them eat it! Next year I'm making my own.

I had a gin one for a few years in a row (not gone any advent calendar this year actually)
It was actually quite hard to keep up with the gin one so I accumulated lots of mini gins which I still have !

Growing up in 70’s we only ever had a card advent calendar, same one was used each year and put away for the following year, with religious pictures, we just opened the doors then closed them again ! I never thought it was strange, we had more sustainable lives then and was a less a throw away society,

My children could never believe me as they are used to chocolate advent calendars, I can not remember seeing choc advent calendars and don’t know when they started to be a thing. The children’s choc advent calendars have no religious element either just snowmen, Santa’s and chocolate branding. Not saying it’s wrong just how much has changed.

jay55 · 24/12/2020 09:02

I didn't have one this year.
Last year I went all out and got the Fortnum and mason beauty one and half of it is still in the calendar. It did have some gorgeous stuff but I'd not do it again.

SmileyClare · 24/12/2020 09:03

Glad that made you smile Beautiful3 I am wondering why on earth the manufacturers thought chilli lovers would enjoy jelly beans with the occasional rogue one that sets your tongue on fire. It's like a cruel trick.

And oh dear epic fail to the poster who forgot to put anything behind their dc's 24th door. Sorry but Grin

Skyr2 · 24/12/2020 09:05

Yes I have had a Nos 7 and and M&S one, again I ended up with loads of beauty stuff I would never use and lots of black eyeliners... not sure how many people actually use jet black over 40...

Icenii · 24/12/2020 09:07

We have a beautiful wooden nativity scene which DD just sees as a Christmas story. Enough room in each door for the character and a chocolate.

Thisbastardcomputer · 24/12/2020 09:07

I had the Benefit and Amazon one, Benefit rubbish, Amazon great

ikltownofboothlehem · 24/12/2020 09:07

I've got the Bonne Maman preserves one. Every day has been lovely. If it's been a flavour I don't like DH does. None have gone to waste.

thosetalesofunexpected · 24/12/2020 09:07

Hi Op
I didn't usaully bother getting those types of Calendars,I think I will have a bit of look to see if any last min ones about.Xmas Hmm

I am quite Surprised at the variety of Advent Calendars out there,
I didn't know you could have a alternative,quirky,cheese advent calendar,or a spicy pepper one,
Got to laugh a bit tho,at spicy pepper Advent calendar Poster in which hubby couldn't help wanting to spit it out in the bin,

Sounds like one of those kind of booby prizes Contestants get on one of those quiky chinese/Asian Game shows in,when a contestant makes a mistake/forefits a prize or something. !
😂

I like the idea of Gibsons Jigsaw Advent Calendar..
Advent calendar reminds me of the swiss cockoo wooden clocks..

Floralnomad · 24/12/2020 09:10

@M0rT

I got the Gibson's jigsaw one...it is brilliant if you like jigsaws so next year you won't have to be disappointed Smile
I got the same one for my daughter and I agree it’s been excellent .
KitKatastrophe · 24/12/2020 09:10

I think advent calendars are always disappointing. Like easter eggs. 100g of chocolate for £6 because it's in fancy packaging.
I had money bojangles this year and the chocs were yummy but I could have just bought myself a box for half the price.

DD had a playmobil one this year. It was fine, but quite a few of the days were boring (e.g. a table) and you couldnt really play with it until about 2 weeks in. She's got bored of it now and just wants the chocolate one. Still, it only cost me a fiver secondhand but sealed, so I'm not too worried and she will have the set to play with next year. If I had paid the RRP of £25 I would be disappointed.

DennisTMenace · 24/12/2020 09:13

I do tend to get one for me if I find them cheaper after Nov 30th. I like the lindt ones, but wouldn't pay full price. I also wait a few days to eat the chocolate together. One is not enough! This year I got a drinks one reduced from £50 to £10 by waiting until Monday to order it. Going to be a Jan vent calendar now.

diddl · 24/12/2020 09:14

"We usually have a cheapo choc based calendar."

Yup-at least you know what you're getting.

And if the dog snaffles them they can be replaced!

GinnieHempstock · 24/12/2020 09:23

I never get one for adults and didn’t even bother for the DC this year. I usually get them the Lindt one. This year, I got them a box of Lindt truffles each. DC1 and 2 had eaten them all by about 4th - and would have opened the windows early and done the same with an advent calendar. DC has had one a day and has ?3 left today for an extra treat Grin

ElfIsAnAss · 24/12/2020 09:26

I had a Lovehoney advent calendar. Expensive but worth it, though it's a mix of good and naff gifts the value of the good stuff makes up for it.

Also had a No.7 one for the third year. Second year was pretty much identical to the first so I think they had a mass of complaints....this year several of the gifts are way better than the previous years so was pleasantly surprised.

SmileyClare · 24/12/2020 09:27

That sounds alright! At least you know what you're getting. I can't help wondering how huge that wine calendar is though? 24 mini bottles. It must have been heavy to carry out of the shop.

Hopefully your last door today isn't a let down; a novelty corkscrew or something. Wink

latedecember1963 · 24/12/2020 09:34

In previous years I've had the M&S beauty calendar but it was replaced with a beauty box this year so I got the Rituals £59 version calendar instead.
It's all been very nice. The product sizes have been good and there hasn't been anything I won't use, but it's not been as much fun as the M&S calendar. I've missed being on the M&S calendar thread in Style and Beauty.

Soubriquet · 24/12/2020 09:37

I got my dc a Disney and marvel story book calender. I then placed a chocolate coin/note in each slot.

Worked well this year

TonMoulin · 24/12/2020 09:44

My parents gave me one with teas and I loved it.
It allowed me to try new flavours wo having to buy a whole box. For a first time thing, I’m impressed

I wonder if there are different Lindt ones? DS has just opened his and it's a chocolate Santa!
I've hinted very heavily to dh that I would like an advent calendar next year - a Hotel Chocolat one! Wink

Littlemissnutcracker · 24/12/2020 09:50

I had a cheese one from Lidl. I got a bit bored with it as it was mostly cheddar or red Leicester but it was good value and we used up the cheese on jacket potatoes or dcs lunch 😂

YorkshireIndie · 24/12/2020 09:51

The malteaser one. The size of the door on 24th made the end chocolate look a lot bigger than it actually was 🙄

drspouse · 24/12/2020 09:53

I have Pukka teas and I have to say I've loved it. If you didn't like fennel/liquorice though you'd be stuck.
