Gift for a newly converted Muslim

Looking for gift ideas for my DB. He was brought up Christian, same as me, but drifted away in his early teens. A few months ago he told us that he had reverted to Islam. As a wider family, over the last twenty years or so we've always bought him slabs of lager, home brewing kits, clothes etc. He's always been very difficult to buy for. This new lockdown has made it even harder. I'd like to buy him something that shows we respect his decision to revert to Islam but have no idea what. Yesterday's announcement makes it even harder.

A Quran holder or a prayer mat are good ideas, maybe a gift voucher for a local Halal butcher?

Well you're ok to drink alcohol but eating pork is a massive sin is it?

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/12/2020 14:11

Don't feed the troll. Please.

OP I don't think you'll need to get anything specifically 'muslim' - what does your brother like to do in his spare time? Would he read a book, or even just enjoy some biscuits or something?

Good on him for cutting down that significantly on the drinking.

I'm not Muslim 1992 but according to my pal who is they are about the same sin wise.
OP s brother is a revert not a scholar so is a work in progress.
Trying to be inclusive and respectful is a nice thing to do at Christmas.
you should try it

Not trolling or being disrespectful but was under the impression that islam was very strict.

1992serpent · 22/12/2020 14:33

Didnt mean to disrespectful was just confused really.

allhappeningatonce · 22/12/2020 14:40

Arabic lessons? Probably would be more fun in person but mightnt be allowed with restrictions. Or some books on arabic basics. Even though the Quaran is translated, a lot of non arab Muslims like to aspire to reading it in Arabic

LaMainDeFatima · 22/12/2020 14:42

Many Muslims prefer charity donations: there are lots in the UK but also abroad too (Palestine etc) Google zakat.

Prayer beads ? Dhikr

A book on the Prophet by a well respected scholars or Rumi poetry ?

Expensive dates are always liked.

@1992serpent

It’s like any other religion where some followers follow the teaching of God to the letter, and others do not.

Like in Judaism; Orthodox Jews are extremely strict and follow all the Kosher Food Laws; whereas more liberal Jews do not.

Roman Catholics tend to be more fundamental in their beliefs compared to the Church of England

Yas01 · 22/12/2020 15:05

That is so considerate of you! I would just go ahead and buy what I feel would suit my brother's personality, be it food/clothes/books etc.

rookgizzardpie · 22/12/2020 15:15

what a weird thread. do you make an effort to get Christian friends bible related gifts at Christmas? He’s just brother, just buy him whatever he’s into Confused

LaMainDeFatima · 22/12/2020 15:27

Exactly ... he's into Islam

Icloud54 · 22/12/2020 15:52

Quran cube OP, I think he would enjoy it!

underneaththeash · 22/12/2020 15:58

I think most people pick and choose the bits of religion they like.

I'd just get him a t-shirt.
