Gift for a newly converted Muslim

Looking for gift ideas for my DB. He was brought up Christian, same as me, but drifted away in his early teens. A few months ago he told us that he had reverted to Islam. As a wider family, over the last twenty years or so we've always bought him slabs of lager, home brewing kits, clothes etc. He's always been very difficult to buy for. This new lockdown has made it even harder. I'd like to buy him something that shows we respect his decision to revert to Islam but have no idea what. Yesterday's announcement makes it even harder.

In an attempt to apologise for my previous dickish posts: what about a nice low-level lamp for early morning/late night prayers?

LadyJaye · 22/12/2020 02:01
@LadyJaye he's on a journey. After trying a few Christian denominations, Islam is the one that spoke to him. Aren't we all on a journey to make sense out of the chaos?
And yes, you're right. I'm sorry for my previous remarks, they were smart-arsey and low.

I wish your brother all the best.

@LadyJaye what do you find insulting??

There are websites that specialise in islamic clothing for men and women. Sorry I cannot remember the names now but I do remember seeing some very nice traditional scarves or shawls, caps and hats or long thick shirts for men when I looked. Waistcoats also, sorry forget the correct term. They might make him feel good and fit in if he goes to mosque. Or even prayer beads. You can probably find them if you google islamic clothes but make sure you are looking at a UK pounds site as they tend to be very international.

Could you ask him if he wishes to mark Christmas, and if so, what would he like?

A native tree sapling because there is lots of environmental protection ideas in islam (somewhere, apparently it says make sure not to ruin the ecosystems of nature) and a tree is always a good idea.
An oak or a birch, birches are fast growing. Provides shade and soil health.

Trees are a good present for anyone really so this is quite generalised.

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/12/2020 12:36

The Muslim (mainly women) I know all drink alcohol.

IndieTara · 22/12/2020 12:46

@LadyJaye lots of Muslims drink alcohol even though it is haram. I was married to one and have seen him legless

1992serpent · 22/12/2020 13:12

Muslims who drink alcohol? What's the point in converting them? May as well make up your own rules

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/12/2020 13:17

@1992serpent

Believing the word of Allah, following the teaching of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, becoming part of the Ummah and local Mosque.

1992serpent · 22/12/2020 13:24

Sorry I dont get the last comment

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/12/2020 13:26

@1992serpent

The point of becoming a Muslim is to become part of the Muslim community, to follow the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad and the teaching of Allah (God) in the Qur’an ( holy book). A bit like Christians follow the teaching in the Bible and following the teachings of Jesus.

Perfumes are an easy gift for men, known as itr.
Also maybe a digital prayer tasbih. I got one recently for my mum. I’ll link it below.

There is more to being Muslim than abstaining from alcohol Serpent if it's helping it's helping.

Literallynoidea · 22/12/2020 13:29

I don't understand why this thread is about religion when really you want gift ideas for a man who (sort of) doesn't drink.

Very odd indeed.

TheQueef · 22/12/2020 13:30

Alcohol free aftershave is sold in shops around here and the last couple of years beard maintaining kits.

1992serpent · 22/12/2020 13:42

Ok, so you can do what ever you like as long as you believe in Allah?

TheQueef · 22/12/2020 13:43

Like Catholicism 1992 without the confession box.
