Yes, the sponge is totally taking the piss. Nobody needs that much frivolous enjoyment in their lives, especially in these dark times. I bet it had loads of buttercream and everything.

I mean if you have a flask, and if you absolutely must feed your small child as he gets some exercise and fresh air (which you should be thankful he's allowed) is there anything wrong with gruel? Gruel is nutritious, yet devoid of joy, and you can bring it in a flask.

You could even strap it to your child's front in a little pouch arrangement, and encourage him to use a straw

Then you won't need to stop at all. A moveable feast of gruel. I feel that's appropriate. But you crack on with your Sponge Guevara

@ReallySpicyCurry. Wait for it... not only did it have both jam and buttercream but it also had marzipan icing! It was the remnants of DS's birthday cake.

Comments taken on board and we will restrict ourselves to cold gruel and stale bread in future so we stay within the "spirit" of lockdown.

MessAllOver · 08/01/2021 17:21

Welcome @sophs29.

@MonkeyPuddle. Grin

MonkeyPuddle · 08/01/2021 17:24

@ReallySpicyCurry no idea, handed over the £1 and the nice lady gave it to me. DS inhaled it and wouldn’t share so it must have been good!

MonkeyPuddle · 08/01/2021 17:25

Pretty sure birthday celebrations aren’t in the spirit of lockdown either you wanton hooligan.

sophs29 · 08/01/2021 17:28

Thank you @MessAllOver Smile

ReallySpicyCurry · 08/01/2021 17:37

Marzipan? A birthday cake? It's all coming out now.

So you had... A birthday party? Everyone knows the presence of Birthday Cake automatically turns any event into a birthday party.

Hang your head in shame Grin

@MonkeyPuddle I'm sad you don't have the recipe but given what the scales told me this morning, it's for the best

@sophs29 welcome!

I’m sure there’s a witty link to be made between Victoria sponge and storming the Bastille, probably via Marie-Antoinette, but it appears to be beyond me this afternoon!

We’ve had one of those days where we did painting, drawing, did the washing up, played with dinosaurs, emptied the dishwasher (3 year old loves this), read books,, set up an obstacle course, and then I looked at the clock and it was 10am and I was out of ideas!

I’m struggling with getting out and about at the moment. It’s so cold! And I’m also worrying a bit about what I “should” do. We’re rural, plenty of paths from the front door. But they all involve a) some time on the road and b) non-pushchair suitable parts. But our local FB groups are full of curtain twitchers complaining about people driving to the local woodland carparks.

MonkeyPuddle · 08/01/2021 17:40

@ReallySpicyCurry same here, I stared intensely at him while he ate it 😂

(My phone always seems to hide a whole page of comments from me until I post, then shows me how behind the conversation I am!)

MonkeyPuddle · 08/01/2021 17:47

@WeSearchedHereWeSearchedThere We live in a similar type of place. We can walk 5 mins and we’re in the fields, or drive for 8mins and in a big park with a playground, woods and a cafe with toilets. DS is happier with a walk when there’s a playground visit involved and I can sit down to feed DD if I need to. If I’m allowed out for daily exercise then I’m going to do the one which is more suited to our needs. I feel not one iota of shame about getting in my car and driving to the park.
I need it, my kids need it. Curtain twitchers get on my tit ends. And I’m stroppy enough to tell them.

Oh my god that's hilarious!!!!! Made my day, thank you!
PinkDaydreams · 08/01/2021 17:51

I didn't even realise we aren't allowed to eat outside, that's so stupid!!! I had a hot chocolate in a travel mug whilst walking yesterday, that'll be banned next!

Today has been hard. Son, nearly 3, keeps throwing full on melt downs whilst being walked on his reins. Also started getting in a mood in his pram so it's making things difficult trying to get us out the house to go for shopping/exercise.

ReallySpicyCurry · 08/01/2021 18:06

I'd drive to the park too. We've got lovely rural beach, field and woodland walks here, but in winter they're crap for toddler off roading, and our usual woods, which are right opposite the house, are all churned up because they were fixing the fence, it's like the Somme.

On saying that, I've just realised the mud will be frozen, we could brave it tomorrow. But Lord, I'd bite your arm off for a big park with a playground and a cafe. Especially the cafe bit. None of ours are even doing takeout, we're a tourist area so they are dead/closed in winter anyway.

It's so difficult to get outside for a properly long stretch with a toddler that won't wear gloves. I want to go to the museum or the theatre. Especially the museum because it's one of my favourite places. I've been thinking about it all day. I really miss going into town. I haven't been in since before March, and I miss it so much, despite being the countriest of country mice usually.

My mum's got her vaccine today though, and DH gets his second round next week, so that's good.

ReallySpicyCurry · 08/01/2021 18:06

Jesus, I'm just seeing that nose bag GrinGrin

MonkeyPuddle · 08/01/2021 18:15

Sometimes I’m funny. Sometimes I’m an arsehole, mostly in between according to my DP.

I massively love the park with the cafe, we go weekly. It’s got a climbing frame in the shape of a train and the pond was frozen on Wednesday which was really exciting for DS and we had som really good chats about ice, snow, water, the weather etc.

I’m not sure what we’re going to do tomorrow, it’s meant to be near freezing all day. Actually I’m going to stick some of his animals into balloons and freeze them with some water. Get the turkey baster out with a jug of warm water and some salt.

BullshitVivienne · 08/01/2021 20:54

The fact that you gave a child birthday cake is a flogging offence on Mumsnet @MessAllOver - sugar is akin to crack cocaine on here. Even fruit is frowned upon.

We are rebuilding the Quadro tomorrow, and going for a walk. The tuff tray is frozen outside with some animals in, so maybe we'll have a go at that. As you can tell, I'm not feeling very inspired!

PinkDaydreams · 08/01/2021 21:24

@ReallySpicyCurry feeling your pain regarding toddlers not wearing gloves, mine is the same!

Right I'm going to get flamed now! I'm so confused with all these rules now, am I not allowed to drive to the beach to take toddler for a walk? If not, then I have unintentionally sinned!Blush

PinkDaydreams · 08/01/2021 21:27

@BullshitVivienne can I ask what a quaddro is please?! I originally thought some sort of climbing frame, the shape of the crystal maze (I don't know why!) But then you mention going for a walk after it so am thinking i could be very wrong?!

MessAllOver · 08/01/2021 21:34

Second the cafe praise! A hot coffee to warm your freezing cold insides and take away some of the pain of continued boredom and social isolation is about as good as it gets nowadays.

The only consolation is knowing that it's been a shitty year for everyone (at least everyone with small children). As we sneak our illicit caffeine fixes, there are many sympathetic and apologetic glances exchanged above face masks as we grab our small children and try to keep them from breathing on each other.

BullshitVivienne · 08/01/2021 21:54

@PinkDaydreams it is a climbing frame, we got a starter kit which has lots of tubes and connectors in and there's loads of different versions you can build. You can get extras as well if you want a slide but they seem a bit expensive to me.

The walk is a separate activity!

PinkDaydreams · 08/01/2021 22:08

Quaddro sounds fab! My garden is only small, bought a slide and a climbing frame that has a cover to make it into a den in the summer but toddler isn't interested in it right now, typical!! 😂 I've no space for anything else in the garden. I'd love a tuff tray and a playhouse but no room
