Kay Burley

So Kay Burley went to a Covid-safe restaurant, nipped to a different restaurant for the loo and then went back to her house with a few others.

To me, the issue was going back to her house with a group (in tier 2) but all the focus seems to be about going to the loo.

What rule did she go break about going to the toilet in a different restaurant? It doesn't mention a mask so I am assuming it's not that she failed to put a mask on?

Asking because I'd probably have done the same thing (also in tier 2) and can't see what the problem is.

She’ll need to go. She’s lost the moral high ground and won’t be able to do her job.

chomalungma · 08/12/2020 23:04

Piers Morgan is being unusually quiet on this. It's the kind of thing he normally tweets about.

notangelinajolie · 08/12/2020 23:13

She has apologised for nipping to the loo but no mention of the gathering bit.

Tier 2
Visiting venues, such as restaurants, pubs, cinemas and museums
Venues can host multiple groups and should follow COVID-secure guidance, but you must not mix with anyone who is not part of your household or support bubble when you are indoors.
This includes in:
pubs and restaurants

I don't see how she can get out of this one. Especially after all the vitriol towards politicians and others who have been caught breaking the rules. She will lose her job surely?

Frazzled2207 · 08/12/2020 23:14

But is she more to blame than beth rigby and the others? She might have organised it but all equally guilty for going.

IrmaFayLear · 09/12/2020 11:20

The key issue is that she has been berating others for far less. And apparently a few of them “nipped in to spend a penny” at another restaurant, and took an hour or two to do it Hmm

Plus, today she’s jetted off to Africa “to sit with lions”. Ever feel like one of the little people?

Literallynoidea · 09/12/2020 11:26

She and Beth Rigby have had SUCH a pious attitude to rule breakers that I find this disgusting behaviour.

How CAN they grill people now they've been caught breaking the rules themselves?

The media elite do honestly consider themselves above the rules - Robert Peston was tweeting last night saying they shouldn't have to abide by the same rules as everyone else. Why on earth not?

IrmaFayLear · 09/12/2020 11:31

Obnoxious behaviour.

Bathroom12345 · 09/12/2020 13:11

Pious - that is exactly the right word. Who the hell do they think they are. I quite like Beth Rigby but she has no excuse either. You get invited to a 60th birthday party in apparently 2 separate restaurants, then you all pile into the birthday girl's house.

They should know the rules back to front. They constantly berate others (especially Burley). Howe can they ever have credibility again?

I was listening to Polly Tonybee earlier. Another smug reporter who almost definitely doesnt follow anything that comes out of her mouth!

IrmaFayLear · 09/12/2020 13:14

I think hypocrisy should be one of the seven deadly sins.

Her behaviour would be understandable if she were a rabid anti-masker covid-denier slapping Dominic Cummings on the back, but to preach and sneer at covidiots going to the beach or a pub and then doing precisely the same herself (plus a bit of world travel thrown in) - I’m struggling to understand the mentality.

Bathroom12345 · 09/12/2020 14:32

Well, it looks like London will be in Tier 3 tomorrow. Having seen the crowds outside Harrods at the weekend (I loved going there when I was a child) what was that all about. It was clearly a shout out via social media to meet there. No masks, and all the picutres were of people who looked under the age of 25.

That is why they probably deserve to be in T3. I hope the people who have spolit it for others reflect. Not Burley, she has swanned off to Africa!

SweatyBetty20 · 09/12/2020 16:08

I lost any respect I had for her when I saw those photos of her practically throttling female photographer when they were both outside a courtroom waiting for Naomi Campbell. According to colleagues who have had to deal with her “she is not a pleasant woman”.

nosswith · 09/12/2020 19:42

Sky have acted. To be applauded for doing so. Unlike the government when members 'forget' the rules or try to bend them.

Though the absence of Beth Rigby questions at Downing Street press conferences will probably bring a smile to Boris Johnson, who never liked her.

CoronaIsWatching · 09/12/2020 19:44

I hope they sack the vile woman

Buzzthedragon · 09/12/2020 19:58

I like Beth Rigby.
She seems to be a really hardworking and intelligent woman. I want her on tv, and I appreciate her political reports. Shame if they sack her during key Brexit negotiations as her live reporting tends to be fast paced and thorough.
Can’t see how Kay Burley can keep her job though because well, people in glass houses and all that. It will be very difficult for her to continue speaking to Matt Hancock like he’s an incompetent naughty teenager after this.

Frazzled2207 · 09/12/2020 20:07

I like Beth Rigby too and am disappointed in her. The were all (but especially BR and KB) exceptionally stupid though, doing something which is entirely not allowed while the risk that someone would recognise them would be surely quite high.

megletthesecond · 09/12/2020 20:14

How hard is it to not socialise for a year FFS. They're not being asked to do anything awful, just sit tight until Easter. They're like impatient toddlers.

I've not been out in five years (lone parent) and managed to survive.

stayhomeatchristmas · 09/12/2020 20:17

@TramaDollface

I’m more appalled that Beth Rigby was also involved
I remember she did go very easy on dominic cummings in the rose garden- It really stood out how weak her questioning was compared to other channels
Andante57 · 09/12/2020 20:20

Honestly these smug people giving politicians a good kicking, interrupting them constantly, talking about ‘my viewers’ as though she owns us

This. She’s so smug and pious but she doesn’t appear to think the rules apply to her too.

stayhomeatchristmas · 09/12/2020 20:24

I cant say I minded KB until the covid first wave when her come-back to any labour mp who criticised the government was: I dont think you would done any better. Hardly impartial and hardy top-level debating skills. Now I just turn over or off when she is on

borntohula · 10/12/2020 09:23

Does everyone really think this isn't happening? Do you imagine politicians aren't breaking the rules too?

IrmaFayLear · 10/12/2020 09:32

I can imagine a whole heap of people are breaking the rules. BUT don’t be a hypocrite. Don’t lie about “nipping to the loo” and then don’t jet off on a long-haul flight and holiday when you haven’t self-isolated.

It is the sheer arrogance of it.

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 09:36

I dislike KB at the best of times, but I respected BR and am disappointed to hear this. As another poster has said, it's impossible for journalists to hold our politicians to account if they're breaking the rules themselves in such a public manner.

I wouldn't want to see BR fired over this because I think she is good at her job, but Sky is in a difficult position because they can't realistically let her report on covid issues any more, and it's one of the biggest issues of the day. I don't see how her position is tenable tbh.

KB can go tomorrow as far as I'm concerned, she won't be missed here. Very surprised to hear that she is 60, though. I will concede that she looks very good for her age!

Frazzled2207 · 10/12/2020 09:37

@borntohula

Does everyone really think this isn't happening? Do you imagine politicians aren't breaking the rules too?
of course. But they have a duty IMO to be SEEN to be doing the right things. And they must have known that going out on the piss all together was a risky manouver.
Frazzled2207 · 10/12/2020 09:39

@AlexaShutUp
agree I suspect KB will be sacked or at least sidelined for some time.
I won't miss her. While disappointed in BR I hope she isn't sacked because as you say she is a good reporter. There ought to be enough Brexit - related stuff to report on in the short-medium term at least. But absolutely she shouldn't be allowed back as if nothing has happened.

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 09:40

Just seen that Inzamam Rashid was also involved. Shame, I quite like him too.

I'm really surprised that all these intelligent people didn't foresee how this was going to play out. It seems obvious!
