Dd has a problem in her math book and we are struggling to answer it- there is no answer in the book. The question is: can you make a system of 3 coins that would allow you to make every number from 1-50 if you only had one of each coin?? Ypu can make up your own coins e.g. 3p 15p etc but can only use each one once to make each number. I'm stuck and stubborn so someone please help!! Thank you

Binary is quite easy.
Starting on the RIGHT and moving LEFT, write a row of spaced out numbers, starting with 1 and doubling each, so you end up with
32...16...8....4....2....1 This is like the HTU (Hundreds, Tens Units) columns from the decimal system.

Then you can write the numbers in binary under the columns
000001
000010
000011
000100
000101
000110
000111
etc.

When you get the hang of it you'll understand this joke:
There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't
