I've been watching The Keepers on Netflix and it has brought up some uncomfortable memories of the deputy head in my secondary school 30 years ago. Strange situations, inappropriate comments, rumours of him having " relationships " with students.
Im still in contact with a couple of classmates who agreed.
I'm just wondering how common place this was ?
Funnily tho at the time we all laughed it off.

Science teacher who used to make inappropriate comments to girls in my class (year 9) about them having nice legs, ended up running off with a sixth former. Was in the front page of The Sun at the time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/11/2020 12:12

At my school a sixth former was going out with and, I think married, a student teacher. That was 1972 and there were only a few years in age between them so, out of school, wouldn't have been an issue. I don't think anyone was bothered anyway. At my daughter's school in the late 90s a girl went out with and married a teacher. She came back and accompanied him on a school residential so the school were obviously OK with it.

My family was abused by a teacher. Because of the genders it was brushed under the carpet and seen as a laugh. They were openly in a relationship for years afterwards and insisted nothing happened till my family member left school but looking back it’s very obvious what was going on. It’s pulled out family apart.

We had one, he used to volunteer to drive the girls to tennis matches and we would fight not to sit in the front seat.YUK

When I was 15 during the 90s - My maths teacher used to flirt with the boys in our class. She'd wear see through tops which the boys would whisper about and she'd giggle and stand flirting with the boys. She didn't actually teach a single class of maths, we'd just work from maths books with no guidance or help from her whatsoever, all while she flirted and talked inappropriately to certain boys in the class. I think from memory there was an investigation after our class all failed various maths tests and a parent complained about the flirting.

sashh · 30/11/2020 12:20

It was virtually a perk of the job in the 1980s.

My form tutor in VI form had married an ex pupil, not very long after she left VI form.

There was a case a couple of years ago of a 1970s science teacher from the school and a 14 year old - but he didn't lose his job.

Pantheon · 30/11/2020 12:20

There were rumours at my school that a maths teacher was having an affair with a sixth former. All the girls found him creepy

PawsAndPhytoncides · 30/11/2020 12:21

We had a teacher that was always spoken of as a "perv", but in all honesty, looking back now, I cannot recall a single concrete reason why.

I suspect sometimes rumours are just that.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 30/11/2020 12:24

@Thinkingg

Poor sixth former, *@HmmSureJan* :(
That's what I was thinking as well, Thinkingg, a bit gleeful that the girl in question was 'in disgrace'.

I really hope it was just clumsy wording; the disgrace was absolutely his, not hers. He was in a position of authority and she was a minor.

catnoir1 · 30/11/2020 12:34

We had a teacher who was a perv.

No one listened to us until one day we walked in and was told he wasn't coming back. I never found out why but I'm assuming someone listened to the complaints eventually.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 30/11/2020 12:44

When I was at secondary school I had a crush on a teacher, he definitely exploited the situation and flirted with me. Obviously in my case it was welcome but looking back some of the situations we ended up in and things that were said were absolutely out of order on his part.

LindaEllen · 30/11/2020 12:50

My brother has only just recently left high school, and while he was there one of his female friends had a relationship with the woman who was supposedly her SEN support contact.

They actually moved in together and lived with each other for a year, then the teacher had an affair with another woman and moved in with her, leaving the girl suicidal and alone.

Wasn't great.

LindaEllen · 30/11/2020 12:50

I should add the girl was in sixth form but not yet 18.

IsFinnRogersDead · 30/11/2020 12:57

Female geography teacher left after rumours of something with a boy in the yr11.
Male PE teacher married to former pupil.
Male history teacher marries to former pupil.
Male economics teacher eventually removed from teaching for inappropriate relationships with sixth form girls. Not prosecuted and only struck off in his early 60s, I know one of the girls involved and it destroyed her.
Male priest prosecuted for abusing boys. He was removed from our parish after rumours (and the suicide of one of the boys from this Boys Club) but only prosecuted in his next post.
School governor in primary also abused yr6 girls in the run up to and on the yr6 French trip. Bugger all was done.

Zoolally · 30/11/2020 13:20

One of my teachers was very inappropriate with me. This was early 90s, catholic girls school, very strict nuns. I do remember complaining but being told I was being silly. He actually used to rub himself up against the back of my chair and would insist I sit in the front row, right opposite his desk, every time. I honestly thought I’d imagined it all until I went to my 20 year reunion and some of the girls in my class all commented about how inappropriate he was with me. There were also rumours of him having a relationship with a 6th former, which turned out to be true as they married a few years after she left.

Timeontimeoff · 30/11/2020 13:26

Yes a male young teacher and a 16 year old. Grooming

Dreadful so inappropriate but they say they are in love....Grooming works of course

BearSoFair · 30/11/2020 13:29

We had 3 confirmed teacher-teacher secret affairs but thankfully nothing involving students. Wasn't the case when my sister was at school several years later sadly, a girl in her year changed schools after the history teacher kept 'accidentally brushing past' her with his crotch on her bum. Sad and Shock that he kept the job and she was the one who had to move!

FenellaVelour · 30/11/2020 13:32

Yeah, one is in prison now but it took over 25 years in which time he became headteacher.

Another was a female drama teacher who slept with a 15yo boy, they openly had a relationship after we’d left school.

Our science teacher had a baby with a sixth former not long after she’d left, plenty of rumours before that.

There are also others rumoured.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/11/2020 13:34

Surely, that's not a problem. It's their own business.

Nomoreboobs · 30/11/2020 13:48

A physics teacher in high school used to say for all the pretty girls to come and sit at the front, he’d also touch ball type physicy (?) things and joke ‘Touch my balls’ This was early-mid 90’s, we just thought he was vile and a creep, can you imagine these days, outrageous how he remained there.

Bufferingkisses · 30/11/2020 13:53

Yes, I still wonder about reporting it now. At the time no one was told (parents) nothing was done and I had to get on with it. It was just "one of those things" then (early 90s). As a result I didn't get my GCSE results/certificates which irks me even now. I suppose it being swept under the carpet will mean there's no record and I don't remember any names from back then, not even my friends. The whole time around the event is wiped out, I can only remember those moments when I look back. I guess not even remembering his name would make me an unreliable witness at best.

We also had a PE teacher who later married the girl he was having sex with in year 10 making her about 14?

I think every school has rumours, I'm not sure how many are true.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 30/11/2020 13:57

We had one male teacher known as 'bummer' who taught 'remedial' class in an isolated classroom. This was in the 1970s. Apparently the girls were safe!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/11/2020 14:07

I dont want to go into details but big YES to this. 3 really questionable male teachers and 1 at my sisters school

HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 14:33

See my later posts and stop trying so hard to see the worst that you can and seize any opportunity to dish out a mini shaming. Nothing "gleeful" there at all. What a nasty way to think.

Thinkingg · 30/11/2020 14:46
@Thinkingg I know. I was amongst the youngest in the school so at the time both of them seemed very grown up to me but of course she wasn't at all. This was the early eighties though when it was usually considered to be the girl or woman's fault Angry
Yeah, i remember that blame mindset, even years later when I went to school. It's so hard to see outside that when you're young.
