Funeral costs

Not sure where to put this. Sorry!
Just wondering what the average cost of a funeral is these days (pre-covid, I suppose). I'd like proper first hand experience rather than random figures quoted online by funeral directors.

Seems wrong to talk about it now, but I'm managing my elderly fathers finances and wanting to know how much to squirrel away into a side account to cover costs. My mums was 12 years ago and Dad dealt with it all so I can't remember.

Thank you.

My dad passed away last year, a local funeral director charged £3500 for a cremation, hearse, 1 car, flowers, celebrant, all the charges etc. The wake cost £200 at a local pub who did sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls, cakes, tea & coffee at £5 a head. They dressed my dad & we were able to visit him in the Chapel of rest.

I'm planning on having a direct cremation, no frills, not even a coffin if I can get away with it. The only family I will have by then is ds & my brother, I don't have any friends, I would rather the money went to ds than pay for a fancy funeral.

you can prepay for a funeral at most funeral directors and it wouldn't be taken into account for other purposes.

MIL was last month - in total I think it was about 6k. Funeral director, body preparation, flowers 135 for large piece and smaller bouquet, coffin 150, church fees, soloist and organist 300 as no singing otherwise (was requiem mass) around 650 crem in London, hearse and one car. We didn't really shop around but having had my own Mums funeral around 12 months prior we knew it wasn't that far out. I did the Order of service with guidance from Church but still £70 printing at a local print shop. We had nothing afterwards though due to the restrictions and that was a little odd - no time for the usual stories etc.
