Lighthearted...

You want a pint of milk. There is only quarter pint in the current open bottle.

Do you..

A... pour the the quarter pint into glass, drink it, open new bottle and pour three quarters of fresh milk into glass.

B... pour in the quarter and top up with milk from new bottle, so mixing two bottles.

C... leave the quarter in the bottle, open a new bottle and have pint out of one bottle.

@minipie

adding them together in one bottle makes the use by date November 29th

Agreed, but the OP is talking about mixing the two milks together in the glass... that is about to be drunk. not in the bottle (I would never do that!). Unless I have misread?

Yes you're right and I explained my mistake upthread.

But then someone asked about bottles so...

I'd have done C if I definitely wanted the whole pint, especially if the use by dates were the same on both, and especially if I wanted to drink it.

I find once milk has been open for a while if starts to taste slightly different from completely new milk, even if it's still within its 'use by' date, so it might also have depended on how long the almost empty bottle had been opened for and how quickly it was likely to get used up.

I was told when I was a child that you shouldn't mix milk from two different bottles. Whether that was ever true, I don't know, but it has become a habit.
