Lighthearted...

You want a pint of milk. There is only quarter pint in the current open bottle.

Do you..

A... pour the the quarter pint into glass, drink it, open new bottle and pour three quarters of fresh milk into glass.

B... pour in the quarter and top up with milk from new bottle, so mixing two bottles.

C... leave the quarter in the bottle, open a new bottle and have pint out of one bottle.

A.

If you do B the added new milk goes off as fast as the old one would apparently.

Mixedupworld · 21/11/2020 21:54

Ha! I asked someone to pour me a glass of milk. Pint glass. She poured the almost empty bottle and gave it me. I said that's not full. She says the bottle is empty, drink that and I'll fill your glass again. I said just top it up with new bottle. She thought that was gross.
Bottles both have same date on bought at same time from same shop.

You are pouring the new milk into the same glass as the old milk and are going to be drinking it straight away so how is it going to go off ?

C for me. If I'm going to drink a glass of milk and there's not much left in the old bottle, I'll open the new one and pour a drink from that.

For any other purpose I'd do B.

C. Milk has to be out of a fresh bottle. The correct procedure is to remove the foil lid, stir in the cream and then pour a lovely chilled pint of milk.

@Floralnomad Ah! Right I assumed it meant pouring the new milk into old bottle not glass .

Of I could drink milk without getting the shits, I'd just help myself to the straight pint. It's not like it makes a difference to the quarter pint, unless it definitely needs using.

Yes, B. Your friend is dotty.

But this has reminded me of the thread where the MNers husband thought it was gross to mix two cartons of milk because it was milk from two different cows. Grin

ShaunaTheSheep · 22/11/2020 00:14

I’d say if you’re that bothered you can get it yourself Grin

Viviennemary · 22/11/2020 00:14

A. I'd never mix the two bottles.

For the people who wouldnt mix 2 bottles, can you explain why?

minipie · 22/11/2020 00:25

B

The only reason not to mix the two bottles is in case the first one is a bit off, but surely you can tell that from sniffing it. If it’s not off then no issue in mixing.

newnewnewbuild · 22/11/2020 00:32

C - I have no logical reason why but I don't like mixing milk from different cartons.

If there was only a dash of milk left in one carton and I needed it for a brew I would open a new one and use that instead of using the end of the old one and topping up with the new one

I think the thing is that say you have 2 bottles. One is use by date November 29th and one December 5th, adding them together in one bottle makes the use by date November 29th. No matter what the proportions are. I think it's because the milk goes off because of a bacteria and the stage of the bacterial growth of the older one is transferred to the newer one. If that makes sense!

Agreed, but the OP is talking about mixing the two milks together in the glass... that is about to be drunk. not in the bottle (I would never do that!). Unless I have misread?
