80s throwback box - help!

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 15:28

Hi all, for Christmas this year I'm planning on doing an 80s throwback box as he loves reminiscing and 80s is his favourite. He was born in 66. So far I have a Walkman, a few cassettes, couple of the tops films in the decade and a top of the pops disk as he's obsessed. The trouble is I'm only going off what I hear him speak about most as I'm only 20 (born in 2000) so I need help without directly asking him!Confused

The idea is he opens the box and is thrown back in time. Those of you who were a similar age in the 80's - what were your favourite things/ what would you be happy to see in the box?

Thanks!

Atari gaming console

You could put together a photo collage of 80s things and have it printed onto edible paper to go on a cake - you used to be able to get that done at large Asda stores, not sure if they still do this.

Porky's! Now there's a blast from the past. Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2020 01:49

I'm not sure if this thread is making me feel nostalgic or just plain old Confused

I'm older than the OP's dad Grin

Brut aftershave, Aramis too. Hair gel very popular, especially Wet Look. Stripy shirts, braces, Ray ban glasses, pastel colours like in Miami Vice. Casio keyboards, Atari games console. Ripped jeans and denim jackets. I liked cola bottles sweets. Wispas and Hob Nobs came out and very popular. Malibu, Dubonnet, Martini, legwarmers, aerobics. Those dancing flowers and coke bottles(?) I could go on! I was born 68, so close in age.

drigon · 17/11/2020 02:21

Asti Spumante and Lambrusco wine too.

There’s a website where you can buy old travel tickets and similar - card train tickets/paper bus tickets from various decades etc. Even just seeing photos took me right back ! Sorry no link.

Or vintage band/political badges (not retro - no one actually in the 80s would have worn an ‘l love 80s’ badge).

Big boom box , I would suggest some musics but mine is mostly American like Madonna and I remember my older brother listened to the "fat boys" and few other hip hops in the 80's (then he moved on to Metallica and Guns N' Roses)

But Paul Young, the police, or Queen are good the the 80's , well liked in America too.

blinkbonny · 17/11/2020 07:17

A DVD of a classic 80s movie like Back to the Future or The Breakfast Club?

DitherFlicker · 17/11/2020 07:23

Board game from the 70's/80's? I'm the same age as your Dad and we played Mastermind a lot....remember thinking the picture on the box was so sophisticated!

80shelpneeded · 17/11/2020 09:41

Some more great ideas
@pollywollydoodler Didn't think of that, I will definitely add that in along with the big picture of him aged 18 on the front of the boxGrin
