80s throwback box - help!

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 15:28

Hi all, for Christmas this year I'm planning on doing an 80s throwback box as he loves reminiscing and 80s is his favourite. He was born in 66. So far I have a Walkman, a few cassettes, couple of the tops films in the decade and a top of the pops disk as he's obsessed. The trouble is I'm only going off what I hear him speak about most as I'm only 20 (born in 2000) so I need help without directly asking him!Confused

The idea is he opens the box and is thrown back in time. Those of you who were a similar age in the 80's - what were your favourite things/ what would you be happy to see in the box?

Thanks!

oh also there was a poster it was huge for the boys and men of the 80s..it was a tennis girl scratching her bum..you can still get them if you google. Erotic at the time truely was now just plain cheeky!

lazylump72 · 16/11/2020 17:02

oh and the porkys film ! must have! going now sorry!!!

EggyPegg · 16/11/2020 17:07

Clackers were early 70s. They were a short-lived fad, and vanished very quickly.
I disagree. I was born in '82 and I definitely had several, of different sizes and colours. I have memoris of walking round the market clacking it after buying it there, and that would have been about 90/91.

That's to the PP who mentioned the water hoop game. That was a lovely bit of nostalgia.

whopooedinthepyrex · 16/11/2020 17:07

Um, the OP did ask about the 80s

I was born in the early 60s and a lot of these things are from my schooldays which ended in the mid-seventies.

Lovely idea though OP - although I am slightly chuckling at the thought of your Dad in dayglo mismatched socks, a pink cardigan and moussed up hair a la Kylie Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 16/11/2020 17:07

Porkys! Haven't thought of that for ages, my late DH had that and the sequel on VHS!

Sodastream - but I think the machines are quite expensive so maybe not in the price range you're looking for.

Those executive games men had on their desks - I remember my dad had one that was silver balls suspended on strings - when you pulled one back and let it go, all the others moved.

Melody Maker, Smash Hits, Look In were all popular mags then.

A mini Pierrot?

Some random ideas...

Swatch watch
Pogo ball
Anything with Garfield
Sun-in
Nintendo Snoopy tennis
Salt & Shake crisps (I think they are still around?)
Letraset stationery sheets
Findus crispy pancakes
Shake & Vac
Half a penny coin
Fry’s turkish delight
Ready Brek
Sweets that look like cigarettes (they may have been 70’s?)

@Atalune

What’s the rise wine that comes in a weird draw caraf thing? It’s in a super wide round bottle too?
Mateus Rosé
EminyBOO · 16/11/2020 17:48

A bottle of Old Spice

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 17:50

Denim aftershave....."for the man who doesn't have to try too hard" !! You can still get it on Amazon eBay etc. Google the adverts hilariousConfusedGrin

Brefugee · 16/11/2020 19:26

oh a Vertical Dangler belt (i have no idea what they were called) to wear with the Fred Perry and peg-topped jeans/trousers. (and with white, towelling tube socks and loafer shoes)

kizzywizz · 16/11/2020 19:46

A thin leather tie, preferably red but grey or electric blue at a push.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2020 20:07

These golden nuggets were top!

And Posh Paws from Swap Shop. He was cutting edge at the time.

Stick on tash and mullet wig?

Just an updated on what I have ordered, socks with the stripe, smash hits magazine with Duran Duran as the cover from 82, 80s nostalgic tv adverts on DVD, a Bowie poster and I managed to find a replica model of his first car. You have all been massive help.

My next mission is to find out what aftershave he woreConfused ,find some vintage sweets with old packaging and maybe add in a bottle of something.

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2020 20:59

I think 'Old Spice' and 'Denim' was the sort of aftershave my father wore in the 80s not my boyfriends.

Definitely Kouros or Drakkar Noir was for the young people.

LangClegsInSpace · 16/11/2020 21:12

Lots of ideas here:

LangClegsInSpace · 16/11/2020 21:29

My experience of being a teenager in the 80's was that there were a lot of subcultures with fairly rigid boundaries that didn't get on with each other.

You had casuals and new romantics and punks and goths and skins and rastas and two tone and metal and mods and a few other things and it was very important to be in one of these identifiable 'tribes' and to dislike all the others.

Then at the end of the 80s we got E and nobody gave a shit anymore.

Do you know what sort of music he was into back then?

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 16/11/2020 21:38

@Pieceofpurplesky omg I used to love Gold Rush.

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 21:39

@LangClegsInSpace
He's into Duran Duran and Bowie which is new romantic, right? Then again he sings along to pretty much every song on old top of the pop episodes during the 80s..

OP posts:
LangClegsInSpace · 16/11/2020 21:45

Yeah pretty much, although Bowie transcends a few categories.

What about some Thatcher-era spitting image?

VienneseWhirligig · 16/11/2020 21:51

Blue Stratos
Kouros
Fahrenheit
Jazz

All aftershaves i remember my dad having during the 80s. My granddad had Brut.

Everyone seemed to watch Only Fools & Horses in the 80s (Del boy & Rodney in a yellow 3 wheel van). Eastenders started in 80 something. Both of those will give you an insight into the 80s fashions, music, etc. See if you can find a Filofax! It was a yuppy diary/notebook/phone book usually in a leather/faux leather holder.
I met my dh in late 80s & he liked Paco Robanne (sp?) aftershave. His dad used Old Spice.
As mentioned previously, Mateus Rose wine was popular then. And Hofmeister beer (brilliant ad campaign with a bear).

Al1langdownthecleghole · 16/11/2020 22:09

@Sparklingbrook

A bottle of Kouros aftershave. Still makes me weak at the knees. Grin
Was going to say that Sparkling!
