To ask if you change your Christmas theme every year?

worstyearofmylife · 11/11/2020 20:13

We've had the same the last two years but I want traditional red and golds this year but OH thinks it's a waste of money (he hates Christmas) I don't feel like the blues and blush we normally have are that christmassy

How often do you all change your theme?

@DelphineWalsh

I thought the theme of Christmas was Christmas.
No silly. That’s like saying the theme of Easter should be Easter.
laudemio · 11/11/2020 20:46

Christmas decs are the same every year but I change the fresh flower arrangements, door wreath etc as I make them myself. Just get some oasis and watch some YouTube vids

Nackajory · 11/11/2020 20:47

My kids love the decorations I get out every year. Christmas is about tradition. Perhaps you can start collecting red, silver and gold stuff to create something that's not based on fashion but based on traditional Christmas and will have longevity. There's a limit to how much stuff we can put in landfill.

I change theme yearly because I’m obsessed with flower arrangements and love to draw out my arrangements, colour in, match to table setting and splash out on lovely white company accessories. But there’s always a budget, and at this stage I have enough in storage to rotate/ mix or mix and match so it looks and feels new with little effort or budget. I can also sew to a reasonable standard so table cloths and napkins are made.

It’s a bit of fun that my DC also enjoys. In fairness I take any excuse to knock up a flower arrangement and set a table nicely. DC thinks it’s a weekly party that everyone has. I haven’t told them it’s a hobby!

SendHelp30 · 11/11/2020 20:55

I don’t change my colour schemes but I have 2 big trees in different rooms which have a different colour scheme to match the room decor

BrieAndChilli · 11/11/2020 20:58

No we have a loose theme of red, white and silver with wood and green thrown in.
The kitchen houses all the kids made stuff, Christmas cards they have made over he years, photos of thier nativity etc.

Change my what?!

It just all comes out the loft. Something very comforting about seeing the same decorations every year.

OverTheRubicon · 11/11/2020 21:10

@Oblomov20

Nearly everybody I know has had the same Christmas decorations for 20 odd years! Plus a few add-ons and a few bits and pieces occasionally.

why would you change every year or every other year? it's so incredibly wasteful and not very green and recyclable.

I can't believe that you honestly think this is okay.

This. And what about all the lovely, wonky decorations that children have made and slightly chipped baubles from childhood or picked up as souvenirs? I can't help thinking they'd have no space in a themed Christmas...

I haven't been in the country for 20 years yet. I'm working on it Grin
hopeishere · 11/11/2020 21:30

No. Our main tree is lots of decorations we've collected over the years. So lots of memories.

Our second tree is silver balls only. I add up the decorations but don't junk everything.

CressidaTheHeathen · 11/11/2020 21:31

Oh god... I have ten boxes of Christmas decorations in the loft and just got a few more bits Blush

We do alternate though and we have 3 trees up to be fair!

We have a few themes

Silver/blue
Black/gold
Purple/silver/white
Red/green/white
Red/white modern
Nordic/traditional

Also have loads of different cushion covers, duvets, garlands etc...

I think I have a problem Blush

MairzyDoats · 11/11/2020 21:35

I secretly judge themed Christmas decorations, anything turquoise or pink, and matchy matchy too perfect Christmas trees. I've just realised I am a complete snob. And I don't care.

ListeningQuietly · 11/11/2020 21:37

Some of my decorations are 100 years old

Buy well

Lovelydovey · 11/11/2020 21:40

No theme. But I do have an enviable collection of kitsch glass baubles in ridiculous shapes (kettle, croissant, sloth, spaceman etc) which come out each year as well as Shaun the Sheep on top of the tree. I don’t do classy but do do fun!

itsgettingweird · 11/11/2020 21:44

My decorations match the colour of my lounge/diner/kitchen.

I've built up the collection over the years and so not every dec gets put up every year.

I mix and match for variation but keep to the colour scheme.

Even my wrapping paper, bows and ribbon match BlushGrin

CorianderLord · 11/11/2020 21:46

Ono that's expensive. We sometimes leave off the red and have it white and gold or other something but usually everything just gets chucked on.

dudsville · 11/11/2020 21:48

I'm with those who say the theme is christmas. Lights are white and the baubles are a mishmash of red, white and gold.

Holothane · 11/11/2020 21:50

This year I’m going for no decs on the tree it’s pretty enough and a Garland I’ve just brought to match, the big advent calendar which is a nativity set up, in the bedroom a small 3 foot white tree with pale green lights which look like baubles..

EatTheHamTina · 11/11/2020 21:59

I haven't yet. But I like the red and gold. My tree has all different baubles on. 'Fun' ones I suppose.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/11/2020 22:01

God, no. The same ones, with maybe the odd new addition, come out every year. Some go back several decades. We’ve never had a theme, it’s glorious multicolour here.

Quite apart from the money, it’s where to store all the different sets - and we have more storage space than many houses.

transformandriseup · 11/11/2020 22:38

We have decorations from every decade since the 50s and just add to them each year. I don't mind that it is all thrown together as Christmas wouldn't be the same without them all.

WithIcePlease · 11/11/2020 22:40

Never
I have 4-5 Christmas trees and wanted to replace a ratty moulting one this year that is over 20 years old and DC wailed that it won't be the same without that tree. God knows what they'd say if I changed the decorations (adult children)

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2020 22:48

@PurpleDaisies

No. The theme is always Christmas.
I came to say that!
