To ask if you change your Christmas theme every year?

worstyearofmylife · 11/11/2020 20:13

We've had the same the last two years but I want traditional red and golds this year but OH thinks it's a waste of money (he hates Christmas) I don't feel like the blues and blush we normally have are that christmassy

How often do you all change your theme?

The same old friends come out, plus the children choose one new bauble each year. I really love it. Perhaps you could change to a more ongoing theme this year and then evolve it over the years. This way feels really magical to me 🎅🤶🌲☃️❄

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/11/2020 08:04

Alongside all the special baubles, I have plain ones in many colours, and we have a family vote on the colour mix each year - 2 years ago DS1 did a spectacular rainbow ombré!

Although DD recently pointed out that the tree usually full by the time the DC have hung theirs (heading for 60 now - a new decoration every year x 3 DC) and it’s a squeeze to fit anything else on.

Hathertonhariden · 12/11/2020 08:05

No. We buy one new bauble a year. They have memories attached and unwrapping them each year brings back the nostalgia that is a big part of Xmas for us. Xmas is all about traditions not fashion for us

I have a mix of individual baubles that don't match anything and a base of matching packet baubles. For years the basic baubles have been reds golds and pinks, but the rest is an assortment. This year I'm considering changing up the base to a rainbow set I've seen - I'll still keep all the individual ones, but thinking of changing the majority.

Hathertonhariden · 12/11/2020 08:11

From time to time I also send the nursery staff who looked after DC a photo of the decorations on the tree that dc made at nursery. DC now teenage but it brings back memories for them too.

Hathertonhariden · 12/11/2020 08:12

We've been friends with nursery staff ever since nursery I should point out.

ritzbiscuits · 12/11/2020 08:31

Never. We have two trees, a grown up gold one in the front and a 'kids' tree (red/white/santa) in the back. We've spent years collecting decorations in both colour schemes. I love opening up the decorations each year and remembering what we have.

Blues and blush aren't particularly Christmassy to me, could you use this as an opportunity to move to red/gold, but commit to that over several years?

We did used to be 'silver' but switched to gold at some point as it suited our new house better.

IceniWarrior · 12/11/2020 08:34

We have 3 different trees. Sitting room is silver and white, DDs Hall one is coloured lights and whatever she chooses, kitchen one is what ever is left over.

missmoz · 12/11/2020 09:46

You're allowed to replace your baubles if it makes you happy, you're money, you're Christmas...

Some snobbery here about what constitutes a tasteful Christmas decoration.

Would suggest donating old but good condition Christmas decorations to a woman's shelter, a-lot of women will be trying to decorate their rooms with very little and might appreciate them.

missmoz · 12/11/2020 09:47

*Your money, your Christmas rather!

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 12/11/2020 09:49

No

But have always had red, gold and green Just buy a few more to replace what the car has destroyed every few years

I only decorate the tree

ListeningQuietly · 12/11/2020 09:52

Plastic waste is energy waste.
Waste and over production are destroying the planet.

Buy well

Dontstepinthecowpat · 12/11/2020 09:55

I bought our first tree at a local market 16 years ago. It’s been all over with us in various house moves due to DH’s job. Still have the original decorations and every year add 4 more as the DC get to pick one each. It makes me so happy, even the tinsel is 16 years old.

TuesdaysWell · 12/11/2020 10:03

I clicked on this thread because I wondered what exactly a ‘Christmas theme‘ was, and why the OP assumes other people had one, let alone one they changed annually.

You know that other thread running at the moment, about how some posters don’t ‘recognise’ Mn posters and concerns as in any way related to the people they meet in their real lives? This is one of those moments for me. I know a lot of people in different walks of life in different countries and at different life stages, but I do not know anyone who rotates ‘Christmas themes’.

ListeningQuietly · 12/11/2020 10:07

We buy a real tree every year.
After it is taken down, the branches are used to protect shrubs during the cold of January and February.
The trunk is stored at the end of the garden to season.
On the Winter Solstice we burn the previous year's trunk as a yule log.

The turning of the seasons is much more important than colour themes.

Tinacollada · 12/11/2020 10:09

Do I fuck. I ain't got the time

LubaLuca · 12/11/2020 10:10

I've never had a theme, other than 'festive'. Our decorations and ornaments are a hotchpotch, certainly not elegant or organised. They all bring back nice memories when the boxes come out of the loft though.

Sunbird24 · 12/11/2020 10:11

We have two sets, red & gold and pink & silver. One set goes in the living room, the other does the rest of the downstairs and up the bannister. All decorations get used but which colour scheme does which area can change. Both contain a few decorations of varying ages with emotional history though!

Lily193 · 12/11/2020 10:15

Different themes for different parts of the house and for outdoors here. We tend to add to our collection as and when we find things we like.

happymummy12345 · 12/11/2020 10:16

I hate themes so never have one. We literally have everything in all colours

BiddyPop · 12/11/2020 10:52

I have a mish mash of all sorts.

I did try a few years ago to put together my more traditional red and gold bits for the living room, and as I already had a few things and saw a few interesting things that year, a more silver/blues/pinks theme (with a vague sense of bottom of the sea rising into space passing through robots on the way...) for our original tree to put in the kitchen/diner (we have put the tree in both places on different years in the past).

However, DH will not accept 2 trees generally, so it hasn't happened yet. But I am thinking we need extra cheering up this year, so I might just do it.

I don't buy a lot - most of my decorations are from the 1st 2 years we had a house. But we will often buy 1 or 2 small things when we are on holidays or I have made a few things over the years. And I have bought a couple of different baubles over the years when I see particularly interesting ones. But it's not normally with any specific theme or colour scheme in mind - just what I see that looks interesting and appeals to me. And that DH only rolls his eyes at, not puts his foot down! Xmas Hmm Xmas Grin

fastandthecurious · 12/11/2020 10:53

I've decided to this year as my decorations are getting a bit old and tired and we got a new tree. I will incorporate as many of the old decorations as possible when I put the tree up next week. Not every year though, I couldn't be arsed and would hate the thought of the waste

WonderMoon · 12/11/2020 11:14

We used to have a colour scheme for the tree years ago.
However, overtime we amassed a sizable amount of fabulous baubles and tree decs so now our tree is a free for all. I love them & buy 6 or 7 new ones ever year.

We keep other decs around the house quite minimal and traditional. The same ones we've had forever, fairy lights, some paper stars, wooden reindeer thing, candle holders and snow globes, that kind of thing.

user1471538283 · 12/11/2020 12:12

We used to have a massive tree that would take hours to decorate that was lovely when DS was younger and interested. It had the lot including ribbons, lots of lights. I've bought one new bauble for each of my DS' life up to 18 so still have all those. I also have some of my DGM and DGGM's baubles. Now we have a much smaller tree and are moving so alot of decorations went to the charity. But we don't change the theme. I love having the old and new mixed together. I love seeing everyone's tree regardless of a theme or not
